I have to pick my friend up from the airport, otherwise I'd stick around for this already-blooming conversation.

For those that are lost, sure-fire bills like this get all sorts of Pork slapped on as amendments because any congressperson who dares say NO to the bill will die a painful political death.

So everything from funding for Bull wevil belly-button lint research to Baby seal anus probing funding gets slapped on the end.

When the budget shortfall happens from all the pork spending, everyone points the finger at the President because it's his fault, of course!

Democrats: If we had more abortions, this never would've happened. (fark the Republicans)

Republicans: If we prayed more, this never would've happened. (fark the Democrats, it's all Clinton's fault)

Libertarians: If more people had guns, this never would've happened.

Green: It's the fault of the Corporations because.... (502909238 minutes later)... And that's why it was a good thing Abraham Lincoln was shot.

Fark you, Stephenv.

I'm sick of people not appreciating the space exploration program. Part of it is that NASA hasn't done all that much to since they flew to the moon. But being an astronaut is brave, and noble, and serves a good purpose. So have you done anything that would make people miss you when you're gone?

(p.s. - sh!tty paintings and bragging about reading long books in three days don't count)

Of course Tom Daschle is there to take all the credit, I see. Either that or CNN cremes every time a high-ranking Democrat speaks (probably the later).

I love how the media talks about how NASA's budget was slashed in the 90's, but is quick to point out how the (evil, vile) Bush Administration has continued that.

They never mentioned the Clinton Administration who started the cuts.

I'm not blaming Clinton, but I think it's just liberal media bias to point out so blatantly that Bush has continued it without even mentioning where it started.

You know if it was in reverse, they would've blamed Bush all up and down and not mentioned Clinton either way.

Just more protection from the Clinton News Network. Blah

Ok, don't get me wrong, this is a true tragedy but they new the risk just like our soldiers( I was one) fireman, and law officers do when they volunteer or choose their line of work. Thing I found so interesting people we voted for, our taxes pay their salaries actually got together and said screw it I feel like a day off I second that ok lets vote all in favor of taking the day off......

I quote.. "The Senate passed a resolution honoring the astronauts and delayed their legislative business until Wednesday so senators can give memorial statements or go to Houston for a memorial service."

Lets see how many Show or make statements....

Think about it they voted to give them themselves a day off.

They should work through the weekend instead, and turn it all into a big congressional slumber party.

DOOM: Word. The politicians who named that legislation the Patriot Act set the current bar for doublethink.

Here's a sobering "Patriot Act" observation from the EFF link:
Be careful what you put in that Google search. The government may now spy on web surfing of innocent Americans, including terms entered into search engines, by merely telling a judge anywhere in the U.S. that the spying could lead to information that is "relevant" to an ongoing criminal investigation. The person spied on does not have to be the target of the investigation. This application must be granted and the government is not obligated to report to the court or tell the person spied upon what it has done.

Remember everyone, the Farkives are part of your Permanent Record.

At least we'll all have a lot of company in Room 101.

I was reading another BBS the other day, and someone had posted a topic about "why such a big deal over the astronauts? Tons of people die in hospitals everyday, homeless people die blah blah blah" and someone else replied with, "They were incinerated 200,000 feet above the planet while you were jerking off in front of your iMAC and posting about how much you hate the US."

I just thought that was funny.

2003-02-04 12:39:06 AM
85BearsFan - OMG you totally win, let's send more people into space so we litter the rest of the country with shuttle debris.

OK, on a serious note, not everyone who dies tragically is a "hero". IMO it's an overused term these days and frankly it's quite annoying. I agree they were serving proudly in a very noble occupation. But they knew the risks as did everyone else. It is asinine that our representatives have to jump on the bandwagon every time something tragic happens in order to raise their own status, and I don't agree with what you purport to be the reasons they are all going. I expect to see congressmen and senators whoring themselves out for TV airtime and to say their spiel about how great our space program is.

Then in 6 months this is all going to be a distant memory. Some years after that, someone will try and introduce some legislation to increase the budget for NASA and it will be shot down by the same guy who were singing the parises of NASA.

I hope you remember to vote for that guy when he goes up for reelecetion.

BunnyMan_Bob,

I guess I should amend that to say "hasn't done much to capture public interest." All those things are you mentioned, I find exciting (well, except Tang). But it seems like the general public needs something more dramatic to get excited about, and I think that's why the space exploration program is taken for granted by a lot of people these days.

//off topic

when the heck did Phil Spector turn into Howard Stern???

2003-02-04 12:44:56 AM
Stephenv,
a couple of points.

1) I don't think we should send any more people into space until NASA knows what happened to Columbia. Heck, it might even be time for them to consider developing a newer means of transportation.

2) I realize "hero" gets overused a lot but I still think it's appropriate here. Yes, they knew the risks, and I think that's part of their heroism. All of those people knew that if something were to go wrong, they'd most likely be completely screwed. But they went anyway.

3) I hope this isn't a distant memory, but I'm afriad you might be right. In fact, you probably are. And you're probably right about the senators being media-whores as well. =(

4) That post was my personal feelings, not what I necessarily attribute to how the senators feel. This hit me hard - I've always loved space (went to space camp as a kid, read tons of books, built models, etc. etc.) so I felt a lot of grief over the shuttle.

5) Sorry I jumped down your throat. I actually like the painting you did. =)
