Could this be a case of Engrish?

It still doesn't explain why some pinhead on CNN Saturday wrote that Apollo 13 burned on the launch pad in 1967...

2003-02-03 04:47:58 PM
wait, the challenger blew up 17 years ago? Wow......I'm old. Doesn't seem that long ago.

2003-02-03 04:48:07 PM
Not that it was ever that high, the merger with AOL seems to have had the same effect on CNN's IQ as it has had on the internet in general. Namely, it's that giant sucking sound you hear.

2003-02-03 04:48:08 PM
Actually, they are referring to the shuttle die-cast toy that was stolen from the gift shop. Not that I had anything to do with it... So that would indeed make two shuttles lost.

2003-02-03 04:48:20 PM
You know, it's funny how Farkers who regulary submit headlines with grammar or spelling problems will bash CNN for doing the same.

2003-02-03 04:48:29 PM
I also heard them say that the shuttle's alititude was 200,000 MILES, no shiat.

2003-02-03 04:48:34 PM
That posting was a waste of Fark real estate. Yep. Bad wording by CNN. Not that interesting. Let's move on. Meanwhile, a really riveting link I submitted weeks ago withers on the vine, unposted. (Wait! Here it is now -- a bit off-topic -- http://www.whitehouse.gov/ogc/apparatus/)

Best Grammer Nazi thread Fark has ever offered up

Quick, skinink, how do you spell grammar?

We can't let this moment pass-- we are the midwives to a new urban legend.

The rough facts:
-a third, secret, shuttle destroyed
-hidden in the budget
-used by NSA
-it put into orbit counter-counter-measures against tin foil hats

What we still need:
-a name for the shuttle, preferably with some tie-in to a Nostradama quatrain
-some crew members, last names should have the same number of letters as assasinated US presidents
-some hope-filled glurge, perhaps a mysterious video image of Jesus in the pilot's seat or a child cured of cancer
-a web tie-in, perhaps enough e-mails triggers an automatic law that requires NASA to reveal the secrets

Let's get going!

2003-02-03 04:50:33 PM
Yeah, well anyone see the Enterprise lately? It never flew on its own, but where is it now, huh?

2003-02-03 04:50:42 PM
Columbia disintegrated high above Texas on Saturday in the second loss of a shuttle since the Challenger exploded 17 years ago, almost to the day.

I think we're dealing more with poor sentence structure rather than complete stupidity.

Sorry I've been so grumpy today everyone. We're going through one of those periods at work where our enthusiasm to do a good job is being crushed by nit-picking, critical bosses and it's turned a normally happy place into a house of horrors.

2003-02-03 04:51:05 PM
Stimp - How, exactly, do you know that it wasn't pickled?

2003-02-03 04:51:23 PM
So, am I the idiot that stared at the headline for about 2 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong with the sentance? Or is it because the Gas guy just got here and turned the pipes on, but didn't find the leak?

2003-02-03 04:51:41 PM
"Dude, where's my shuttle?"

2003-02-03 04:52:06 PM
Heh...that's a trick question...right, Andonbray?

2003-02-03 04:52:11 PM
For those interested I've submitted a script for an 18 episode script of "TubGirl and The Pickle" to Comedy Central.

I was thinking of Connie Chung as TubGirl.... let that image burn your retinas......

2003-02-03 04:53:19 PM
That's alright, FOX had a graphic stating that the orbiter weighed 4.5 MILLION pounds this morning.

*bangs head against desk*

2003-02-03 04:53:26 PM
So let's see according to CNN... Columbia was traveling 18 times the speed of light... otherwise known as mock 18... and now they have the U.S. losing 3 space shuttles...

I say why wait? Let's give them the pulitzer for excellence in journalism right now.

Quick1 funny how Farkers who regulary submit headlines with grammar or spelling problems will bash CNN for doing the same.
But accuracy is the cornerstone of journalism. And yes people probably over-react but it doesn't speak well for CNN's professionalism. IMHO

and to think i never knew you're a co-worker of mine, WickedWanda... ;)

And yes, I have reasons to back my theory.

1) Who is collecting popular opinion polls in Iraq?
2) Didn't the crash occur at about 10pm in Iraq?
3) Did someone rouse the Iraqis out of bed and ask them about the space shuttle crash, and whose fault it was?
4) Who actually cares what the opinion of the Iraqi on the street is regarding the space shuttle? Did we consult the Iraqi on the street regarding the budget deficit, or the Robert Blake trial? In other words, is this news?

To me, this move was pure, unadulterated, pandering, petty propaganda. CNN was saying, "Wow, doesn't this suck. Hey everybody! The Iraqis are laughing at our pain. Aren't you glad we're gonna kill them?"
It was unbecoming to professional journalism and was insulting no only to the viewers, but to the very principles of fair reporting, to journalists all over the world who sacrifice to bring facts to the people, and especially insulting to the astronauts and their families.

Sorry. Please return to your fapotism...

Drew should take over CNN in a Farker-led coup. Prime time boobies!

2003-02-03 04:54:23 PM

They just fixed it :)

Columbia is the first shuttle to be lost since the Challenger exploded.

Fark to the rescue!

2003-02-03 04:54:34 PM
did you ever notice that the Discovery and the Endeavor have never been photographed together?!

just say'n...

2003-02-03 04:54:46 PM
It says it in the article, too. Wasn't just a typo.

"For unfair, unbalanced news, turn to the
news source America distrusts most...CNN,
the Communist News Network."

2003-02-03 04:54:56 PM
I'm still in shock that we have the capability to travel 18 times the speed of light!!!

If Pulitzer awards for being a bunch of dumb farks, well, CNN has it in the bad, baby!!!

2003-02-03 04:55:06 PM
They're = They Are
There = at a place where something is located
Their = plural posessive, as in, "They're pissed that they lost their space shuttle that used to be over there."

Signing off...

2003-02-03 04:55:28 PM
they fixed it

2003-02-03 04:55:35 PM
Tubgirl AND pickles? A match made in heaven.

Did ya all notice that they fixed the problem? it says "first" now....thus making the whole caption wholly pointless.

Morons. Journalism has not died. It did however suffer a head injury and is now operating on an IQ of 3.

Another funny CNN caption

(Like CNN, fark doesn't offer spell check or prook readers before we hit the 'add comment key'! My bad!)

2003-02-03 04:56:31 PM

Huh?

2003-02-03 04:57:17 PM
But seriously folks...

How many orbiters does the US have left?

And what are their names? Isn't Atlantis still around? Surely it's not the last one.

/shuttle challenged
groan

2003-02-03 04:57:22 PM
They fixed it. Did anyone grab a screenshot?

2003-02-03 04:57:36 PM
Nightsweat: Maybe now they'll retrofit it to fly?

I think the real lesson we've all learned is not to give shuttles names that start with C.

2003-02-03 04:57:37 PM
Maybe CNN is watching us!!! Drew needs to incorporate fark into a news service with all of us as correspondents! :-)

2003-02-03 04:57:48 PM
How long before CNN comes up with some conspiracy theory on the shuttle. Here's mine:

Secret Star Wars Defense System Goes Terribly Wrong

Analysis of pictures obtained by confidential source (I can't believe it's not smegma) show a flash appearing on the horizon moments before the Space Shuttle exploded, killing all seven astronauts. Our source inform us that a satellite loaded with anti-missile technology accidentally locked onto the space shuttle upon entering the atmosphere. Thinking it was an IBCM, a computer-generated radar pulse was fired, destroying the craft. Top secret testing of a Star-Wars anti missile defense system has been going on unannounced for the past year. Ironically this is the only successful test of this system so far.

2003-02-03 04:57:56 PM
CNN = Cranial Numbness Network

2003-02-03 04:58:27 PM
they fixed it

2003-02-03 04:58:35 PM
What about all those shuttles that blew up trying to destroy that asteroid? I can see them not counting Mir because that was a space station. But I think they lost at least two shuttles in that mission before the oil driller hit the button and nuked the giant asteroid. Too bad France wasn't around to surrender.

2003-02-03 04:59:20 PM
I could run CNN better with my asshole tied behind my back.

Someone REALLY needs to give them a good hard donkey-punching, no lube.

2003-02-03 04:59:26 PM
last paragraph:
Columbia disintegrated high above Texas on Saturday in the second loss of a shuttle since the Challenger exploded 17 years ago, almost to the day.
So much for copy editors...

With my keyboard.

They missed this little tid-bit at the bottom of the story.

Quoth CNN Nevermore:
"Columbia disintegrated high above Texas on Saturday in the second loss of a shuttle since the Challenger exploded 17 years ago, almost to the day."

2003-02-03 05:00:48 PM
WickedWanda: But seriously folks...How many orbiters does the US have left?

Three.. the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria...

Seriously... three, I don't know the names.

2003-02-03 05:01:10 PM
What was the actual article about anyway? Isn't the shuttle big enough news? Now they're going to tie fluff pieces to it.

I don't know which is more shameful, the fact checking or the synthetic news.
