Well deserved!! Congrats Marty!

Congrats!

Wow, he's 36. I've watched him for so long. I remember being annoyed when they traded Billington, and were going to rely on Terreri and "some new guy".

And Elias is now the leading points scorer with 702? That makes me.. Kind of sad? I guess I would need to see it in relation to other teams.

He broke the Devils' team record in points, previously held by John MacLean.

He has a lot of catching up to do for catching him in playoff wins. Might as well think about adding another Cup while he is at it.

But that doesn't diminish the accomplishment. Trap or not, he's a hell of a goalie and deserves every win.

Thanks for once again proving that the only thing the Devil fans care more about than their own team is what the rangers do.

It may have been awesome if it was something that could be done in a minute or 2.

and he's not the best goalie of all-time. I can't speak about the old goalies, but Hasek was better than Brodeur when they both were in their primes.

Marty is just as much a raging douche, he is an arrogant SOB who is pissed off that he is not across the river, so he could get a bigger spotlight. I too am looking forward to the Rangers playing them in the playoffs. It will be fun to see Fatso loose it with Avery standing in front of him (with his back to him of course)

Are you serious? You couldn't be further from the truth. Rangers haven't done d!ck since 94. Devils have won, 3 cups and been to 4. Don't post unless you know what you're talking about

Except that's not Avery's style, as we all know.

F the Rangers. Their only reason for popularity is that they play where a bunch of subway lines intersect. F'ing loser team bought their only cup in recent history (Messier) and quickly faded into mediocrity. Even Gretzky couldn't help.

If Marty played "across the Hudson", he would only have one championship, instead of three.

First of all, I knew at some point you and I could agree on something in life.

Secondly, let's be honest, Hasek had that "slinky spine", and don't get me wrong he's a great goaltender, but he surely is no Marty. Marty has had one trait that most goalies don't have...consistency. When the Devils were top of the league, he played really well, when they were struggling to make the playoffs, you could never blame it on Marty, he was always playing well.

Weird, he got 6 Vezinas in those two years and played so well his Sv% is .10 higher than Marty's.

When the two were in their primes, Hasek was better. He played on worse teams and put up better stats and won more awards.

That "trap" argument is pretty weak. It's not like he was facing ten shots a game.

Hasek played into his 40s, and didn't have as many wins as Brodeur has at 36. End of story. You think save percentage is as important as wins? Go ask a goalie what he thinks about that.

When comparing goalies, sv% is way more important than wins.

Hasek as also 7 years older when he started in the NHL, played in 200 less games and didn't have one of the top NHL teams in front of him or a great offensive team until Detroit

I think that you'r not giving Brodeur enough credit for making the Devils "one of the top NHL teams". He carried those teams on his shoulders. They were a top NHL team because of him. He wasn't a great goalie because of the team he played on. They were great because he played on their team. Fairly huge difference.

2009-03-18 11:14:55 AM
Sirjohnfalstaff: No it isn't. That's just so wrong I won't even bother to argue.

Wins isn't a meaningless stat, but if the goalie is giving up 2 goals a game, saving over 92% of the shots, he's done his job.

I'm not criticizing Brodeur who is in my opinion, the #2 goalie in his era.

see above, and you are right it was 25 shots/game. I just looked it up and Roy faced 4000 more shots over his NHL career in reg season. You really think that does not make a difference?
