Fascinates me that so much life can live in such an inhospitable area.

You've never been to Michigan have you?

Only inhospitable to us because we really don't enjoy being cold and half-starved all the time. Whereas most other species don't even care, they just "git-r-dun" or perish.

FTFA: "That's remarkable, and it raises a lot of questions."

See, this is further proof that evo's don't have a clue as to how evolution actually works. If evolution is so perfect, how did two creaatures evolve the same way in two completely different locations? No one can answer that, and this guy proves it with this dumb question.

/God did it.

That's not fair, Subby. It's glandular.

And any headline with a "Yo mama" joke is fine by me.

If the Earth has been warm enough in the past to melt the polar ice caps, the original created species were wiped out. New species must have evolved...species with the same or similar adaptations.

Wow, a whole article on the arctic and antarctic without once mentioning global warming! Or climate change, or whatever they are calling it today.

You know who ELSE was convinced that the Poles produced a distinct species, don't you?

So now we must not combat global warming or these rare creatures will surely perish.

TFA is actually very cool. Follow up would be welome, but I bookmarked the site anyway. Going to ask my marine biologist cousin about this study, too.

Good article- but I knew that already. I was using the "take an argument that makes perfect sense and try to convince people that it's unreasonable because I don't understand it" angle.

Besides, this guy isn't talking about convergent evolution. He's talking about the exact same species. That's pretty damn cool- I'd like to hear more about what they find out.

Oh... *proceeds to actually read the article*

Wow, I agree, that really is quite something. I'm sure the findings will be misused by creationists. But they'll have a hard time "explaining" it too in the light of their belief in extremely rapid intra-species diversification (or whatever you want to call it) since the Great Flood.

Maybe it has something to do with the relatively stable climate and environment which both polar regions provide.

dwalder: You know who ELSE was convinced that the Poles produced a distinct species, don't you?

Kudos to you and subby.

So what is the evolutionary explanation for this? I may be showing my ignorance when I guess that during the last ice age equatorial waters would still have been too warm for these species to migrate from one pole to the other, and separate evolution of the exact same species is impossible without some sort of guiding intelligence... but what else could it be?

Strippers are a Species?

2009-03-14 01:19:54 PM
there are very strong currents that flow between the poles, and if the plankton was caught up in a particularly strong one, perhaps during the last ice age when ocean temperatures were lower, it could be possible that they moved from one pole to the other.

/not an expert by any means, just very science curious.

It's not an either or proposition. Just because you can't believe it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

It is entirely possible that during the last ice age it was cool in the water enough for these species to migrate using the ocean currents. That water can stay quiet cool as it travels from the poles to the equator. Otherwise I'd be swimming in the summer off the coast of Oregon and not freeze.
