I assume this means ESPN has altered their radio lineup to include programming actually worth paying to hear?

I don't know if anyone here listens to Dan Patrick but his radio show (available in podcast for free on iTunes) is awesome. We have ESPN radio in Boston but I don't know anyone who listens to it. From what I have heard, they don't really have anyone worth listening to. Mike & Mike is a boring, vanilla show.

Wow, thats alot to hear wall to wall coverage of the NBA.

I was going to attempt to write something funny about how true this is, but just thinking about Mike & Mike is putting me to sleep.

I dont know - I kind of like it, but then again my commute is 15-20 minutes so by the time I hear the ESPN sports break, my local sports summary, a few commercials I probably listen to them for a total of 10 minutes a day - having said all that I seem to enjoy those 10 minutes.

THIS

We get Dan Patrick on Fox Sports Radio AM, and his show is great. I would rather listen to Hair Loss and Debt Consolodation commercials than Mike and Mike. Mike and Mike is so tired and uninspired.

But NOTHING beats how lame Rome is Burning is, Rome's show is nothing short of a disaster. It's like what I would imagine an internet tough guy's podcast would be like, as he reads fark's message boards out loud and responds to them in his tough guy voice. It's so cringeworthy, I can't believe he's still employed.

Mike and Mike are pretty dull, but they do have access to the biggest guests.

Colin Cowherd is the real gem of ESPN. His show is really sports for the "quasi-intellectual".

As the PD of an ESPN Radio local affiliate, this is GREAT news!

If ESPN comes to my cheap ass owner with a bill like this, I'll finally get approval to replace all the ESPN shows with local/regional content at 1/10 the cost. Seriously, the best thing ESPN Radio brings to the table is Mike and Mike, and that's not saying much.

Mike and Mike - Not bad once you give up and accept the big guy / gay guy act.

Colin Cowherd - Shills for the NBA, and insults anyone who disagrees.

Mike Tirico - Shills for the NBA, MLB, and whatever else ESPN tells him to.

Mike and Mike broadcast like there is an angry nun staring at them all day. ESPN and Die Maus will not let them do anything edgy or contraversial. That is why it is nothing but fat/wuss jokes in between station IDs.

I used to hate Cowherd for a long time until I came to the realization that it was just an act. He is no different than Stephen Colbert; he is playing a character on the radio.

elmoron: Mike and Mike are pretty dull, but they do have access to the biggest guests.

The problem is that they don't know how to interview. When people go on that show they just go through the motions. At least Dan Patrick tries to get information out of his guests and he occassionally gets them to break news. For example, Kurt Warner outlined his new contract along with the pay cut on DP shows 10 days before it was announced. Recently he had the Dodgers GM who basically said that they look at Manny's contract as a one-year deal. The Dodgers GM seemed oddly bitter. Why sign the guy and they act so negative about it on a radio show?

Local sports radio here dropped Dan Patrick for ESPN Radio. That is NOT a good trade. Not a good trade at all.

I totally agree that they lob softballs during interviews, but I think that probably has more to do with restrictions placed on them by ESPN. Not necessarily things that are spelled out to them, as far as scripting their questions or anything. I just think that they are well aware that if they make a guest uncomfortable, they are going to hear about it from their bosses, and possibly be suspended.

As far as the Dodgers GM, I get the impression that he's a baseball guy, and baseball guys don't want Manny on their team. However, Manny makes too much sense for them economically (butts in seats) to not sign him. So, he signed him, but he's not too happy about it.

"If ESPN goes to those smaller market stations and asks for a nominal rights fee, they're probably more likely to get it, since the ESPN brand has more resonance in those listening areas. In the big markets, you have local sports stations as brand names. In smaller markets, not so."

Wrong. Smaller market stations are more likely to dump it and go to SNR or Fox if available because they can't afford rights fees and need to barter everything. Or they'll go to an ABCRN or Jones 24 hour format. It's true that the ESPN name means more to a smaller station, but when that station doesn't have resources to pay for those four letters they're just not going to.

The Lew & Mike show is pretty good. It is on from 4-7 each afternoon.

As someone mentioned above, once you accept the gay guy/jock bullshait for what it is, Mike & Mike isn't so bad. I can't listen to Gerry Callahan's Rightwing Cavalcade of Whimsey on WEEI anymore so I had no other choice but to switch to Mike & Mike. I wouldn't mind seeing M&M go if something better were to come of it, but for national sports stories they do ok.

c'mon they do fun, wacky things like ... talk about their children's school project and last night's reality television show and.. and..

i'd rather hear lil' jimmy norton talk about spreading hefty bags in his bathroom and receiving yellow treats from a craigslist hooker. maybe i'm just jaded.

Mike and Mike sucks, but luckily I don't have to listen to it on the West Coast since they're way early. Instead we get an extra hour of Colin focused on the West Coast more or less("mysterious first hour"). That makes me happy, as I like Colin. Tirico and Van Pelt are both boring, though the weekly ATHF spot is amusing.

That said, I spend my mornings surfing from Colin Cowherd to The Sports Lodge to Dan Patrick because radio commercials are so goddamn long. Watching on ESPN U every commercial break is filled with a SportsCenter update because the radio breaks are twice or three times as long. Afternoons are reserved for local radio of course. Mason and Ireland ftw

Yet another example of how ESPN is out of touch with the reality of the local broadcast industry. For the past 20 years or so, Jefferson-Pilot, then Lincoln Financial Media, then Raycom offered regional SEC football coverage to southeastern TV markets on a barter basis. It allowed Raycom to sell syndicated spots in a multitude of markets and gave some low power stations or even affiliates with no college football an opportunity to sell college football. Then ESPN signs their deal with the SEC, thus ending Raycom's relationship. So what does ESPN do? They go to the dozens of Raycom SEC affiliates and say "umm, yeah, we're actually going to charge you for these games now". I guess the person making that decision thinks the TV industry is going gang buster right now... ummm, it's not.

Stations are letting people go, cutting expenses wherever they can, and ESPN thinks they can CHARGE for something that used to be available on a barter basis? I hope the folks in the southeast have ESPNU because that's where these games are going to end up... not on broadcast stations.

So getting back to the topic... local radio is even worse off than local TV... and they think they can extort $100K from stations? Yeah, good luck with that.

I am really starting to enjoy listening to Petros and Money on FSR. Talk about the anti-Mike and Mike. Very little ass-kissing going on on that show. Plus, they have a little passion and enthusiasm.

Gee, you don't seem that way.

Stephen King owns the sportstalk station I listen to. He treats his people pretty well, and of course has pockets deeper than the depths of hell, but I'd be surprised if he'd pony up big $$ to keep Espn. Of course, he's not in a major market, so it may not be the 100G figure quoted in the article.

I've never heard a guy on radio ramble off a series of trite and self-gratifying insults, following each one with "OWNED!" Rome is the living embodiment of the Internet Tough Guy meme.

Mike & Mike are broadcasting legends compared to the shiate that is Colin Cowherd. Cowherd is just Jim Rome turned down a notch.

The problem with ESPN in general is that whoever they have a deal to show games from, they have to suck up to in every way possible. Any sports league that doesn't air on their networks is treated like a little pest that they could care less about. (Maybe that's why the NHL is ripped on Fark too. ESPN doesn't show it so it doesn't exist to some people). That's why ESPN Radio sucks, because they can't do anything to anger their partners. While DP doesn't have that worry anymore really, so he can talk about whatever he wants without fear of his superiors going batshiat crazy.

2009-03-11 01:56:34 PM
What, exactly, does anyone on the air on ESPN Radio ever do, aside from promoting properties to which ESPN or Disney have the rights?

2009-03-11 02:07:00 PM
I have always found it a little odd that ESPN reports on the same sports they are broadcasting.

It is like if CNN only gave us the news that happens inside the CNN building.

Dear ESPN Jerks,
Who would in their right mind (outside of the northeast) would pay that much to listen to your employees orally relieve The Yankees, Bo Sox, Eagles, etc. on a half-hourly basis? Gimme the local guys, who are also fat headed jerks, anyday.

I really like M&M. Very down to earth and quietly entertaining. Unlike the usual circus of FM idiots that are on the air from 6-10am.

The local station hear in Mobile, AL is WNSP and they suck! They recently dropped the local afternoon show for Paul Finebaum due to money issues. Paul just annoys me and can't stand him. WNSP can not afford it if ESPN charges them and I hope the station folds. The only shows I like are Dan Patrick and Tim Brando and I can listen to them for free on the internet.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure who would want to spend that kind of cash for ESPN programming. Mike and Mike are kind of boring. Tirico and Van Pelt are actually pretty good but they seem to be on air together so infrequently that it probably annoys listeners.

Anybody else think the heyday of ESPN radio was Kornheiser and Patrick were on?

The Fabulous Sports Babe was entertaining. She was Cowherd before Cowherd, w/o his douchebagginess.

Near the end of Patrick's Espn tenure, the minute Olbermann joined him (from time-to-time), I would shut the station off instantly.
