She probably saw it coming, but didn't say anything until just now and then retroactively told you, "Yeah, remember when we had the catnip and chamomile tea?"

Pft. I'll undercut the competition at $60 an hour and I'll tell you a fortune that you want to hear.

"I see a period of struggle then gradual success if you stick to the course. Also, you'll bag several hot broads (or hot stubs where applicable)." Bam. $60.

Wait, why am I in school again? If people are willing to pay for that then I'm wasting my time learning real skills.

/I could sell occult supplies in the same building
//Oh no, that quartz crystal has the reincarnated soul of Alister Crowley's cat in it. That's why it is $5000.

Because flushing your money down the cosmic toilet is the best thing to do in tough times.

No wonder our economy sucks.

So do fortune tellers tell you what your future is, or do they provide advice to shape your own future? It doesn't seem like the two ideas are compatible.

Surely any advice, or just knowledge of your future, would undoubtedly change what your future would be. So which is it?

Cynical frauds preying on the stupid. And stupid babies need the most attention.

I see nothing wrong with this.

Idiots paying idiot tax.

According to several of the people I work with, it doesn't matter, anyway - the world's going to end in Dec '12, so why worry about it?

It sucks. They're great folks, but it's hard for me to sit around and listen to them talk about 9/11, horoscopes, psychic powers, etc (hey, we only use 10% of our brains, so that other 90% has to be for something, right?).

Blah.

Considering all the "sound financial advice" we see on tv, I can't see this as beign any worse.

This is why I think it's worse than just 'idiots paying idiot tax'. Everyone knows someone like this who seems otherwise intelligent, or at least a well intentioned and good person - who doesn't deserve to be taken for a ride. But it happens all the time.

And that's what grinds my gears.

Have you tried looking in the basement of the Alamo?

I don't think they would actually pay for a psychic, but that's only because of their consumer skepticism. After all, how do you tell which ones are real? If one of their friends used one, though, and recommended the psychic - yeah, I think they'd try it at least once.

2009-03-04 04:58:21 PM
I have to add, FTFA:

"I'm known for being brutally honest, so don't call me if you don't want to hear the truth," cautioned McArthur, who said she receives direction from the spirit Joshua, an "ascended master" from biblical times.

hahahaha!

Yeah? Tell that to the kid on Penn & Teller's Bullshiat who when she was younger, managed to debunk a bunch of psychic/healers and then wrote a class report about it!

State what you're actually claiming. Provide evidence for said claims.

People who feel that they have little control over their lives tend to turn to superstition and rituals, so they can feel they have a handle on something. This is perfectly predictable.

people going to "oracles" have already made their choice, if only on a subconscious level, now they are looking for a rationale for their choices since they realize many of the choices they make are irrational. thus they can say "it's fate" rather than "i suck at figuring out my life."

It wasn't psychics, per se, but Theraputic Touch healing. Emily Rosa did a test for an elementary school science fair project, and as a result, became the youngest person (age 11) to have a paper published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
