Like raaaaaaain on your wedding day.............
2003-01-31 09:46:24 AM
Can anyone explain to me any decent reason for not wearing a seatbelt?
2003-01-31 09:49:09 AM
Once again, not ironic. Just stupid.
2003-01-31 09:51:01 AM
Irony would be if the ticket for not fastening his seat belt killed him.
2003-01-31 09:53:06 AM
is the fact that this article isn't actually ironic, just bad luck, itself ironic?
2003-01-31 10:13:13 AM

It's like being thrownnnnnnnnnnn from your car for not wearing a seat belt 9 days after you were cited for not wearing a seat belt.

Isn't it ironic? Don'tcha think?
2003-01-31 10:46:14 AM
It's like meeting the girl of your dreams,
And then finding out she's five.
It's like raiiiiiinnnnn on a rainy day.

I'm glad to see that everyone is becoming an irony nazi like myself. I used to not be one. What is the appeal?
2003-01-31 12:44:35 PM
- his truck left the road, vaulted about 150 feet ..., struck a field approach, flew another 40 feet and went over the fence ...then rolled about 130 feet before hitting a tree -

At least he was obeying the speed limit.
2003-01-31 12:53:30 PM
I think they should just do away with the tag altogether. Nobody knows how to use it.
2003-01-31 01:53:17 PM
Impaler the appeal is when something is truly ironic, it's even funnier. When something isn't ironic, but people say it is, it makes the situation less funny (IMO).

It would be Ironic if Ralph Nader died in an accident not wearing his seatbelt.
2003-01-31 02:45:01 PM
Bergerson was driving on Blue Earth County Rd. 11 around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday when his truck left the road, vaulted about 150 feet over Hwy. 68, struck a field approach, flew another 40 feet and went over the fence of Minneopa State Park. It then rolled about 130 feet before hitting a tree and catching fire. Bergerson, 29, was pinned underneath.

This paragraph left me speechless, but I did manage a giggle or two.

I second removing the Ironic tag altogether. It has served its purpose and is now just a dead horse.

Irony = 3 a (1) : incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result (2) : an event or result marked by such incongruity.

I think we have some borderline irony here.

Eggs-actly, Johnc98.

No, wait...what?

I think it would be more ironic if the man, who normally does not wear a seat belt, wears it one day (maybe because someone asked him to), got in an accident and dies from injuries caused BY the seat belt.
2003-01-31 04:48:23 PM
This whole debate serves as proof that Fark needs to get rid of the "ironic" tag. There are only 4 comments on this thread related to the article.
2003-01-31 05:06:32 PM
Needs a dumbass tag.
2003-01-31 05:06:37 PM
Always restrain the ones you love.
2003-01-31 05:06:51 PM
Click it or ticket, sucka.

Total Fark <3's Wi99um.
2003-01-31 05:08:08 PM
I dunno. I'm a lot happier with this use of the tag than some previous efforts.

Methinks some of you limit your definitions a bit too much.

Oh, and just so Sudie won't get mad:

That must suck.
2003-01-31 05:08:31 PM
I think he was probably farked even if he had been wearing a seatbelt, you know with the whole roll over and over and catch on fire.
2003-01-31 05:08:32 PM
I always wear my seatbelt. Nothing worse than not having it on in a accident. Why, if you speed down a Arkansas freeway, and you hit a animal, you could break a ass!
2003-01-31 05:09:37 PM
This is the exact opposite of ironic. Ironic would be the person getting a ticket for not wearing it, then being killed BY it a few days later.

This is just dumbass.
2003-01-31 05:10:52 PM

When are the admins going to add a "Darwin" tag to the list? We've been getting too many of these stories lately...
2003-01-31 05:11:10 PM
Would it be ironic if he crashed the car while opening up the envelope with the ticket in it?

Alanis destroyed whatever meaning I had for that word.
2003-01-31 05:11:26 PM
You know what? Instead of talking about the article, I think we should all ponder aimlessly on the meaning of the word 'irony'. It makes reading thread discussions so much more interesting.
2003-01-31 05:11:38 PM

I don't wear a seatbelt cuz my cousin knew this guy who wore his and was in a accident. He was stuck and they couldn't free him in time. They told him 'fore he died they could have saed him if he wasn't trapped in with the belt.

2003-01-31 05:12:20 PM
This is so just like a black fly in my chardonay.
2003-01-31 05:12:45 PM
Lesson here is easy. Wear your freakin' seat belt!

I hate them, but it sure beats flying out of your car and then having that 2 ton chunk of metal land on you.
2003-01-31 05:12:48 PM
Ironic would have been if he would never have gotten in the accident because the cop shot him.
2003-01-31 05:13:14 PM
irony is if he was angry for getting the ticket for not wearing a seat belt and thus didnt pay attention to driving and died. Even MORE if he had hit somebody doing the same thing.
2003-01-31 05:13:15 PM
2003-01-31 05:13:20 PM
Does anyone here know ANYBODY who doesn't wear a seatbelt and has a justification for it?

I've never EVER understood how you could be too lazy to wear a seatbelt.

Then again, I've never understood how you could be too lazy to use a turn signal, either.

2003-01-31 05:14:32 PM
Does anyone here know ANYBODY who doesn't wear a seatbelt and has a justification for it?

See my post. I seriously have heard that one a couple times. "What if I got stuck and they couldn't free me??"
2003-01-31 05:15:08 PM
Amazing that poelpe still ignore this simple safety device while worrying about the ozone layer and whether butter is good for you or not.

BTW, I don't shower because my boss's neighbor knew this guy whose cousin's hairdresser slipped...
2003-01-31 05:15:20 PM
It would be more ironic if he had been wearing his seatbelt and was then attacked by a gorilla.
2003-01-31 05:15:37 PM

This would have been ironic only if the accident had occured while he was drinking Chardonnay with a fly in it, because it was raining on his wedding day.

This should be apparent to everyone. Really, you oughta know.

2003-01-31 05:17:37 PM
Any time that I see an Ironic thread, I go there just to see the Alanis quotes. Good times...
2003-01-31 05:17:55 PM
"his truck left the road, vaulted about 150 feet over Hwy. 68, struck a field approach, flew another 40 feet and went over the fence of Minneopa State Park. It then rolled about 130 feet before hitting a tree and catching fire."

Uh yeah, i'm thinking he'd have been toast even with the seatbelt.
2003-01-31 05:18:59 PM
Yes, Steve a freakin too long name, I find it as fresh and humorous as shouting 'repeat' over and over again.
2003-01-31 05:19:05 PM
Buppaprog - "Can anyone explain to me any decent reason for not wearing a seatbelt?"

Good? Not really, no. There are anecdotes a-plenty about people who were in severe side-impact collisions, in which a seat belt might have caused them to suffer greater injuries by keeping them trapped so close to the impact point.

My girlfriend has lived through one such tale, which has, unfortunately, convinced her that seatbelts themselves are dangerous. I have managed to get her to wear one anyway, on occasion, by pointing to the warnings in the car's manual about the airbags on the passenger side (basically, if they go off, and you're not belted, the airbag could injure or kill you) and also pointing out that my driving style and the particular path we were taking pretty much ruled out any side-impact collisions.

She still hardly ever wears one, but has given up on chiding me for always using mine

In texas they just passed all those seatbelt laws that allow police to pull you over and give you a ticket SPECIFICALLY for not wearing your seatbelt. . .and so of course. . .they stand on street corners and write tickets for people not wearing seatbelts. . .blahblahblah

While I do wear mine, and believe it is stupid not to, why can't someone decide whether or not to wear theirs? If they want to be stupid and kill themselves why can't they?

Just a thought.

2003-01-31 05:20:55 PM
wear your seatbelt. don't be selfish.
2003-01-31 05:21:13 PM
I used to not wear my seatbelt b/c it was uncomfortable. Then, they passed the seatbelt law. I would put it on, but not until I was driving down the road, etc. Well, one day, I decide to put my belt on before even pulling out of my parking space. Good thing I did, I got hit by a car pulling out of the driveway and could have been slammed around inside the car if not for the belt. Now, the belt goes on before the car gets in gear.
