If you say it in a mincy Oxford accent when you've only studied abroad for a term it is an "affected effect effect."1

The media lives for scandals they can make into one of those. The media is a bunch of -gate-oholics!

I'll see your '-gate' hate and raise you throwing '-ohol' or 'oholic' when describing someone with a mild addiction to something innocuous.

So you're opening the door for effect-effectgate-effect. You realize it only needs to show up a few times in print beford Oxford snatches it up and makes it real?

Uh, what's the alternative to calling a phenomenon an effect, exactly? "Phenomenon" is certainly a cool word, but it's kind of awkward and annoying used excessively.

What I'm saying is that this isn't a rhetorical fad, it's more or less correct use of the language. It's logical to use when the phenomenon being described is widely known, like the Doppler effect. For more obscure stuff, we choose a noun that describes the phenomenon more specifically (ex: Brownian motion, rather than Brownian effect).

First damn post beat me to it. I will say it anyways. It is effect-gate. Or the effect-gate effect.

Surool: I'll see your '-gate' hate and raise you throwing '-ohol' or 'oholic' when describing someone with a mild addiction to something innocuous.

I don't see any problem with the use of effect when describing a phenomenon, but the -oholic thing bugs the shiat out of me. Where can I buy some chocohol, rageohol, shopohol, or workohol? I've heard that these substances can be intoxicating and addictive, but I just can't find any of them. The -gate thing pisses me off too, but not as much as all of the -oholics.

Come to think of it, lots of things piss me off. Maybe somebody's been slipping rageohol into my beer...
