Can anybody else think of a "dual use" for these devices?

1,000 of them?

2003-01-30 05:05:57 PM
Well, considering that we have all those troops nearby, most of which, have cell phones, and the entire population of Qatar probably has a sum total of 5, I think the "primary use" is obvious.

"Can you not hear me now? Good"

2003-01-30 06:51:30 PM
i want one.

i also want a device that i can use, say at a suburban soccer game, that will make everyone's cell phone ring within, say, 500 feet. call me on my cell phone if you invent one.

2003-01-30 07:17:44 PM
This seems like a pretty good idea, actually.

2003-01-30 07:18:08 PM
Check out the message board on Yahoo! News. Some asshat is arguing that Qatar should change it's name because of it's spelling. Amazing.

2003-01-30 07:18:41 PM
I want that, and the car-killer raygun, so I can zap all the SUV idiots (sorry, you do NOT need a jeep in the subburbs. Get a van, biatch)

2003-01-30 07:19:35 PM
That's just un-American!

2003-01-30 07:21:56 PM
I need a portable one of these. Take it to the movies, the car, work, concert, etc...

The possibilities are endless.

2003-01-30 07:22:51 PM
I know they make some that are about the size of pins that function within about 50 feet. I know I want one.

2003-01-30 07:23:03 PM
Can't you just smell the liberation?

2003-01-30 07:24:02 PM
They sell these gadgets? URL?

2003-01-30 07:24:08 PM
I think the Japanese are already using these in movie theaters.
Take that, inconsiderate asshats.

2003-01-30 07:25:26 PM
Screw mosques, we need these in theaters.

2003-01-30 07:25:36 PM
In case some people start arguing for these in American churches, I would just like to say that many Catholic priests are also hospital chaplains and need to have pagers and cell phones in case of an emergency.

I would also like to ask that, since I brought up Catholics priests that no one says "all of them are pedophiles" or anything similar to "all of them are pedophiles."

2003-01-30 07:26:02 PM
I want one.

2003-01-30 07:27:06 PM
Yes,

Use these in Movie Theaters and Restaurants!!!

2003-01-30 07:27:15 PM
God. Would you look at that comma? For shame, Gladiator12g. For shame.

Pocket-sized too big? ;)

2003-01-30 07:30:56 PM
We woudln't need these things if they'd just blow up all of the mosques. Always gotta do things the hard way.

2003-01-30 07:31:35 PM
I heard they are considering building movie theaters out of material containing a fine metal mesh making cell phones unusable.

Lets then build restaurants and churches out of them. Jeez...lets just put it up over all public places.

God I hate cell phones.

2003-01-30 07:32:18 PM
Where are these things for the movie theatres or during my boring ass lectures in college?

2003-01-30 07:34:29 PM
Ok, it looks like some company in Israel makes a model called the C-Guard.

I can't find ordering information though. Anyone?

You know just a thought about gladiator12g comment....the two catholic preists I've met in my life (I'm in a predominantly(sp) protestant (SP) area)Have been two of the greatest and most compassionate people I've ever met. I'm serious these were great people. I had pretty extensive contact with one because a friend of mine did stuff with his local church. I think this pedophila stuff is just being blown up by the press and such. The catholic church is easier to attack, due to the fact it is a lot more centralized than most say...baptist churchs. there is no real criteria for what protestant churchs call themselves. I mean sure if you call yourself a baptist church and don't teach baptise beliefs then you'll get scorn from the baptist organization but there is no central focus and you won't get in any real crap. You could call a church the first episcopal, advent seventh day, baptist methodist coalition of the world and no one would say much. I'm pretty sure if you tried to call yourself a catholic church there'd be trouble....oh well I got nothing.

It is indeed both astounding and depressing how stupid most people are.

It is. Not something belonging to it.

2003-01-30 07:37:44 PM
I believe any device like this violates FCC regulations; therefore, you won't find one for sale (legally) in the US.

2003-01-30 07:38:44 PM

While I would get some joy from being able to silence cell phones in theatre, church, class, etc., I think that these devices could serously undermine legitimate uses for cell phones, like enemergency calls and such.

If the government, or any public institution started using these, I'd call foul on basis of freedom. Private institutions (and persons) -- that's a different story. They don't seem absolutely okay, but I certaintly don't have an intelligent arguement against them.

Oh, and before Ace_Lightning says it: My uncle is a prayer leader in Quatar, and thinks these things work great

I want 1000 of them to put along the highway between my house and work.

Madcow66

People in separate cars on a monotor weay betwen your house and work piss you off enough to zap their phones ? sad, sad...

2003-01-30 07:45:54 PM
Like DaTwinkDaddy pointed out, abuse of these jammers would do more harm than good. I know the first thing I'd do if I got one was mount it in my car and just leave it on wherever I was driving.

And what's the deal with all these new ring tones? Some of them sound like a damn Disney ride when they go off. Just let them go Ellen beep beep beep.

2003-01-30 07:47:46 PM
1 nuke=job done=go home and have a beer

2003-01-30 07:48:03 PM
"And what's the deal with all these new ring tones?"

It lets those who don't succumb to the temptation of having your phone ring "Jingle Bells" to know if it's their phone ringing or not.

That said, I wanted to kill this asshat woman who was sharing the outdoor dining area of a local cafe with my wife and I. This stupid bimbette was showing her new Nokia to a friend. And she demonstrated every... freaking... ring... in their entirity.

2003-01-30 07:49:53 PM
Regarding the dual use, the military has been moving away from cell phones because they are not secure.

2003-01-30 07:53:41 PM
With a maximum range of 200m, it wouldn't be much of a dual-use item. And these may be illegal in your locality, as they also prevent police and emergency workers cellphones from working, which could result in loss of life.

2003-01-30 07:57:19 PM
"And these may be illegal in your locality, as they also prevent police and emergency workers cellphones from working, which could result in loss of life."

Then mark my house as illegal. I don't know what's in the walls, but it kills cell signals. It even took out the industrail military-grade walkie-talkie sized one the phone company guy used.

And, yes, construction beams filled with cores of pure selinium have been suggested. No Zu'ul manefestations yet...

2003-01-30 07:58:00 PM
I was more referring to servicemen having cells for personal use,(in the last gulf war there was alot of mention of calls home via cell) I don't think they use them for military matters, but hey in a pinch ya never know.

2003-01-30 07:59:39 PM
I want one. Too bad theyre illegal in the US. I never accepted the argument that there are some people who "need" to be available all the time. If youre that darn important, never leave your house. Most secure line of communication you have. Unlike tempermental cellphones and pagers.

I wouldnt mind them so much if they figured out how to use vibrate or that in the movie/restaurant/church/morgue/synogouge/mosque/etc... was not the best place to have your conversation (esp since they all seem to find the need to raise their voices).

Put the thing on vibrate, and if it goes off, take it outside.

I can't find ordering information though. Anyone?

ordering info

illegal in the usa as someone had mentioned, country of origin: OUR ADDRESS: 2 Kaufman St., Tel-Aviv 68012, ISRAEL

(may be old news as i have not refreshed in awhile)

2003-01-30 08:03:35 PM
I know there has to be a "call to prayer" joke here, somewhere.

2003-01-30 08:06:01 PM
Cordless cell phone neutralizers, no batteries needed.

2003-01-30 08:06:15 PM
I would just like to say that many Catholic priests are also hospital chaplains and need to have pagers and cell phones in case of an emergency.
Well then have an assistant wait out back and if an emergency comes through, discretely go and fetch him. Defending this stuff is asinine. People managed fine before. Doctors could always be roused from a theater by an usher, etc... Stop enabling bad behavior!

2003-01-30 08:06:45 PM
Well hell.. why doesn't AMC buy a few of them too?

2003-01-30 08:08:49 PM
FlakMonkey: Does that work best on the cell phone or the user?
