Can it make a car fly? I'm still waiting for a flying car.

The engineers at Penn State's Centre for Acoustics and Vibration better damn well realize that Joe Pa pays their brainiac paychecks.

Does this mean I can soon build my very own T-1000 prototype?

how smart is it?
cat smart or dog smart

Can it make something both a floor wax AND a desert topping?

I for one welcome our new overlords the rotary motors.

translating the bending into rotation of the central shaft
Central shaft... giggle.

2003-01-30 02:13:45 PM
shape shifting? you mean i can get my own working transformer? YAY!

2003-01-30 02:14:40 PM
You could top a desert with floor wax if you really wanted to...it would certainly take a lot of wax, though.

Placing 12 of the "arms" star-fish-style around a central shaft, the inventors stimulate them simultaneously and they all bend in the same direction. A passive clamping system, either a ball and spring arrangement or a commercial one-way roller clutch, acts as a kind of turnstile that only allows the motion to ratchet along in one direction, translating the bending into rotation of the central shaft.

Yeah - just try to tell me you all weren't thinking the same thing. Dirty farkers!

Now only to master protoculture.

DerangedMuppet, yeah right. They'll probably waste this technology away instead of building useful things, like an 18-wheeler than can turn into a robot general.

I like it!

This will revolutionize the "sex toy" industry!

It's not a "smart" motor, nor is it made from "smart" materials.

It's a clever design that uses piezoelectrics, is all. That's nice, and interesting, but throwing the word "smart" in there to make it sexy for the marketing people is pretty lame.

"Small electric motors! Yay! How are they different from other small electric motors, you ask? Well, uhmm ... you can, errrrr ... shape shifting! Yeah! Shape-shifting's cool, isn't it? And grey goo! Uh... a mission to Mars! Mars, I say, Mars! Isn't that exciting?!"

I am so excited by this concept of all-new, all-different small electric motors, I must say. And all the new things you can do with them, that are utterly inconceivable with other small electric motors. Yes.

This will never work, because its power consumption requires 1.2 Gigawatts ! Nothing puts out that kind of power !

NOT GOOD!!!

2003-01-30 02:31:30 PM
Of course it'll be used for sex toys. Remember--

Every technology attempts to expand until it can be used for sex.

Those technologies which cannot so expand are replaced by those which can.

i want them to make the little tape transformers that fit into the boombox deceptacon. then i can toss them at people who annoy me at work, and sit back and laugh as they try to get away from the panther and shiite.

2003-01-30 03:00:12 PM
"they create an "arm" that can bend to the left and right in response to an electric field.

Anyone else here think "marital aid" as the first use for this? Ten bucks says Japan has some dolphin-shaped finger dildo made from this by xmas.

2003-01-30 03:07:00 PM
You guys are complete idiots if you think this will lead to transformers. Freaking nerds. Get a life.

However, I can see them making some Go-Bots from this.
