Brings up a valid point... if you travel into the future, will the Earth still be in that exact spot?

Saborlas: Brings up a valid point... if you travel into the future, will the Earth still be in that exact spot?

Yes. Recent quantum physics calculations have shown that in order to viably travel through time, the 4th dimension, you actually have to use a higher order dimension. The higher order dimension can be conceptually thought of as a set of parallel universes. The parallel universe where time is forward of your own where you stop will be the one where the Earth is also in the exact same physical location. This is similar to our observation of the Uncertainty Principle that you can not know both the exact position and momentum of a particle. You can either be in this time frame on the Earth in its current location where it is in *this* parallel universe, which we'll call Universe A, OR you can be in a different time frame (your future) on Earth in the same physical position but that would require you to enter a *different* parallel universe, which we'll call Universe 1.

Quantum physicists have tentatively concluded that the only difference you would notice, other than that you were in the "future" (but within a parallel universe), is that coin flips would always go in reverse from Universe A where you left to begin with.

Hope that helps clear up your question.

What?! I laughed my ass off at that one. That was marvelous.

I'm not a Star Trek nut or else I'd know the answer already, but...what movie did the ST footage come from? Or was it an episode?

Saborlas: Brings up a valid point... if you travel into the future, will the Earth still be in that exact spot?

Well, the deal is that you move in 4 dimensions (5, if you travel to the past), and hopefully, whatever medium you travel through corrects any directional momentum, as well, since the Earth is also rotating at over 1000mph at the equator. You'd hate to exit your 'time portal' only to find yourself moving 1000mph in the wrong direction.

Why 5 in the past and 4 into the future? The 4 is easy... time, and space (1+3). 5 into the past is simply a fact... you cannot travel to your own past, but rather a copy of the past, diverged at the point you entered it. If you did succeed in returning to your relative present, nothing you did in the past would have affected it, but you could also move into the future you 'created'. There is no paradox, because given the classic case of killing your own grandfather before he fathered your parent, you've really only killed a copy in a parallel universe.

I was making a joke, inferring that there was never a cat to begin with. But I guess you went back in time and stole your sense of humor. Or did you?

I've yet to see them produce anything actually worth the time it took to watch it.
