submitter: New York Post writes apology so canned, even a trained monkey could have done it

That would be a racist statement if the NY Post editorial board were black but funny if they are white.

You're shiatting me right? Why would they do such a stupid thing?

Anyone who has ever seen a political cartoon knows this wasn't meant to be Obama. Political cartoonists are overly obvious when it comes to using public figures.

In most cases where they reference Obama, they draw Obama and then write "OBAMA" somewhere on him or below him.

HulkHands: In most cases where they reference Obama, they draw Obama and then write "OBAMA" somewhere on him or below him.

Exactly. Maybe in this case, they should have put a "rabid chimpanzee intended to represent Congress and/or the general idiocy of Washington politics" on the sidewalk next to the ape.

+1 subby. I howled like a chimpanzee.

Yer not supposed to say black people are monkeys.

this is bad news for Obama.

/haven't thought about that one in months.

2009-02-20 10:25:05 AM
I don't get it.

2009-02-20 10:25:06 AM
And to think of all the times political cartoonist depicted George W. as a monkey with NO FRIGGIN' CONSEQUENCES! We are such a wussy society and sickenin'.

2009-02-20 10:25:20 AM
I look forward to the coming cartoons depicting a chimp and/or Obama shooting a rabid New York Post.

Yes, except not any members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

2009-02-20 10:25:38 AM
I'm pretty sure they did mean it to be Obama, albeit in a cleverly multi-layered way that gave them lots of ways to claim otherwise, but there's this thing I've heard about called the First Amendment. Leave the damn cartoonists alone.

and even then... lots of people sill wouldn't understand it. Half the people have below average intelligence ect. ect. ect. What people don't realize in cases like this is that nothing made them feel offended by the material involved, they chose to become offended themselves.

Because depicting shooting those who write stimulus bills is retarded and so are those defending it.

It boggles the mind that someone would take offense to that cartoon. What was that, a cartoon where a current headline-story is compared to the current political situation? OUTRAAAAAAAAAAAGE!!!

2009-02-20 10:27:01 AM
Hahahahahahahahaha

BOW DOWN

BlorfMaster: Yer not supposed to say black people are monkeys.

But it IS OK if they're the president.

2009-02-20 10:27:06 AM
If you wanted to misinterpret it, then it would have been standing for Nancy Pelosi. But, of course, that wouldn't really be much of a manufactured outrage then, would it?

This is stupid and they should have issued a flat denial of an apology. This shiat only encourages Pete Wentz's like Al Sharpton. It would be nice for people to start showing some spines and stop bowing down to the lowest common denominator every time they gin up some bullshiat "outrage".

2009-02-20 10:27:14 AM
The only trained monkey I see in that article is the photo of the guy holding the cartoon.

2009-02-20 10:27:16 AM
The only thing that amazes me is that anybody reads that rag at all, let alone that it gets any attention on a national scale.

Right, you can only say that about white preznits....

It's different as he looked even more like a monkey that Obama does.

Settle down, Mr. Holder.

2009-02-20 10:28:58 AM
Of course they meant it that way, of course there were protests, of course they apologized, and of course they sold more papers because of it.

Childish - but protected - speech.

2009-02-20 10:29:01 AM
You know Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson got on their knees and thanked God when they saw that cartoon. Full employment for at least another year for them.

Then why didn't he here? Who (or what) was the chimp representing? I didn't see "Congress" written in blood or anything. Who do the police represent?

Dancin_In_Anson: You're shiatting me right? Why would they do such a stupid thing?

Because offending a large number of people is a bigger deal when you are a large company that can be boycotted than when you are some random dumbass posting shiat on internet forums.

You do know who actually writes bills, don't you? I would assume from you moniker that you do.

Dancin_In_Anson: You're shiatting me right? Why would they do such a stupid thing?

Because the cartoon did not make any sense, was unfunny, and in an effort to try to force the cartoon to make sense the strongest possibilities are racist or traitorous.

BlorfMaster: Yer not supposed to say black people are monkeys.

Of course not. They're apes, like everybody else.

2009-02-20 10:30:30 AM
PS, the Post got exactly what it wanted from the cartoon. Think they'll lose any advertisers or money over this? Hell no.

I'm still trying to get the whole race angle here. Help me out would you?

Apparently there are "fundamentalist racists".
Can't have pics of Allah in some quarters, no monkeys in others.
Like beauty, race is in the eye of the beholder.
He who screams offence is the dolt.

Mostly David Obey on this one. But I can't figure out why the Post would want to (a) portray him as a chimpanzee or (b) portray a Congressman being shot by the cops.

2009-02-20 10:32:36 AM
The fact that Congress, not Obama, actually wrote the stimulus bill doesn't preclude a cartoonist from misleading his or her ignorant audience on the point. Shooting anything and saying "I guess we'll have to find someone else to do that job" is obviously a bit irresponsible. But again, First Amendment. Do we really want a National Editorial Board to preview political cartoons? They should be as immune from good taste as this place is. :)

Did you smoke your breakfast with a pipe? The only people that find that cartoon racist are either ignorant or are looking for an axe to grind or some combination of both.

Howard Cossell Rule always applies, not matter the circumstance.

Dancin_In_Anson: Why would anyone be offended?

Doesn't matter why anyone was offended. They were, and that's why they apologized.

But you know this, and you knew this before you pretended to be bewildered as to why they apologized. Your real point is that you want to make sure that we all know that you think it's retarded and outrageous that anyone was offended. I can assure you that we all already knew that.

Another slap in the face for the angry white man.

Go put on a wife-beater, drink a sixer of PBR, and stomp someone in your steel-toed boots.
