Here's a simple equation you need to remember when dealing with texans:

Love of Guns + Heavy Drinking + Low Intellegence =

Lots o' Dead F*ckers.

This school's gonna need "Terry Tate: Hall Monitor" after this.

2003-01-29 05:32:47 PM
It's funny to think these idiots would have done any good by protesting.

They should be expelled if they walked out.

nice tag man. Loved the book. Live the philosophy.

As for the students...

Oh sure, like you wouldn't riot against block scheduled classes.

Riiight.

2003-01-29 05:35:11 PM
I would have loved to have had Block Scheduling. Does anyone in here live in El Paso?

2003-01-29 05:35:31 PM
Doctor Nick-
2 hours nerve racking? Please. Most of my classes are 2 hours long. Try talking about contracts for the sale of grain for 2 hours, 2 times a week, for 13 months. Get over it.

I had block scheduling... and it sucked! So don't say you would have liked to have it in HS when you havent had to experience it yourself.

2003-01-29 05:37:39 PM
So, contracts and grain sales... 1L or 2L?

Your prejudice is overwhelming.

2003-01-29 05:38:47 PM
Where is the TEXAS tag???

These Texans will fight over ANYTHING!!!

Do you think any of them will get the death penalty?

2003-01-29 05:38:57 PM
Rem: News Flash, buddy...it's called "College." That whole basis of block scheduling. Many of us in here have tried it....nice try, though.

2003-01-29 05:39:07 PM
Long class + short attention span = bottle fight.

2003-01-29 05:39:34 PM
I was looking for info on Bush/Gore's grades in school when I found this (grades given their economic plans by economists). It looks like it's for the 2000 election, but fun anyhow.

2003-01-29 05:39:35 PM
REM

I did have it for one semester because we were the lab rats for the pros and cons of going to block scheduling.

2003-01-29 05:40:38 PM
Wah farking wah! Block scheduling is not that bad...

2003-01-29 05:40:49 PM

I didn't know people came that stupid.

2003-01-29 05:42:15 PM
The important question is what set them off?

2003-01-29 05:45:06 PM
I'll tell you what's wrong with block scheduling:

TWO HOURS OF CHEMISTRY.

God, I hated that class. Not enough to riot, but close.

2003-01-29 05:46:09 PM
Celow...

I'm just giving the texans a taste of their own medacine. Besided, most of them are white rednecks and the upper-class have egos so big that if they had physical mass, Earth would be sucked Texas first into the black hole that would form.

2003-01-29 05:47:08 PM
I can't wait until these kids are forced out into the real world and they harken back to their free and easy school days.

If I could go back I would do it in an instant.

Jeebus.

"What we need is another Vietnam"
-Bart Simpson

Oh wait, we're about to get one...

First off, it's "We need another Vietnam, to thin out their ranks a little."

Second, he was referring to Generation X, not whatever generation is in high schools now.

Third, there isn't another Vietnam coming.

Mierk, people come in all types of stupid. If you don't know that by now, you haven't been on Fark very long.

Student protests turning violent? Is that even newsworthy anymore? Seems like students today have some sort of violent protest every weekend or so. I used to be interested when it would happen every couple months, but now the thrill is gone.

2003-01-29 05:51:06 PM
Should have taken care of it the same way they did at Kent State. Shoot the little bastards.

2003-01-29 05:53:47 PM
I teach in two schools, a middle school on a traditional (7 bells) schedule and a school with 4x4 block scheduling. Students have 90 days of four 90 minute classes each semester, for two semesters in the year. They can take eight classes a year, four each semester.

It's great for the administration -- fewer class changes means fewer opportunities for fights. But for teachers, and students, there are issues.

Students have fewer days over which to absorb material and fewer nights in which to practice through homework; it's more difficult to get the kids to retain material. State mandated SOL (Standards of Learning) tests are given sometimes weeks before classes end, and students have to pass them to pass the courses, so the kids only really get 70-80 days to prepare for these exams. In the end, they lose, and because they lose, we the teachers lose.

As a foreign language teacher, I have a second problem: consecutive courses. A student who takes Latin I in the fall semester of one year may not be able to take Latin II until the fall or even spring of the next year (as is the case this year), giving them eight to twelve months to forget everything they learned in the first course. Traditional scheduling would've given them only three months off for the summer.

Block scheduling == bad.

Of course, rioting == bad too.

By the way, for those complaining about long, boring classes -- it's clear whoever's teaching those courses hasn't adapted to block yet. A 90 minute class needs to include several different activities hitting on several different modalities, and cooperative learning is preferred to whole-class lecture. Younger teachers who haven't known anything but block teach very differently than those who are used to traditional schedules.

Psycho-Jay Like most people who disparage this state, I doubt you've ever been here. Also if this state is so horrible would you please get all of the new englanders to stop moving here, the bostonian and new york accents are absolutely repugnant.

2003-01-29 05:57:21 PM
This is actually pretty amusing. To me, at least. I went to a high school which was literally down the road from Montwood.

We always knew that the Montwood kids were a bunch of dorks... ;)

Unless things have changed in the past few years, Montwood is an incredibly middle class, 2 car garage school.

2003-01-29 05:59:41 PM
Sigh.. of all the things to protest over. I too had block scheduling starting my junior year. We went to class for the same amount each day (red n black days) and in each two week period you basically spent the same amount of time in each class. Hell, it meant you only had to go to a PE class twice a week every other week.

2003-01-29 06:00:31 PM
Spoiled, too. They had the best lunchtime access to restaurants. Close and varied.

Sqee-

As I New Yorker, I promise never to move to Texas. Or any state neighboring Texas.

2003-01-29 06:03:03 PM
Good for you.

2003-01-29 06:03:18 PM
Dr.Nick:

You can't stand 2 hours in class? Try 10 to 12 hour shifts, 5 days a week man. Your only productive for the first hour? hahaha...good luck with your job search when you graduate man....

2003-01-29 06:04:52 PM
Oh and Psycho-Jay Bush jr did (no matter how impossible it seems) go to college, he was a member of skull and bones after all.

2003-01-29 06:05:16 PM
I never had block scheduling. My old high school started that a year after I graduated.

I see a lawsuit from the rock throwing hooligans

2003-01-29 06:07:44 PM
Sheepkiller -- Heh. I think these students would freak out if they knew that in college, they might face a FOUR hour chemistry lab (and that it's not unusual to spend even more time to keep up).

2003-01-29 06:10:31 PM
hey now, not all texans are beer chuggin', gun shootin', school failin' rednecks.

But the ones that are are great source material for jokes.

JihadJoe

Cute tag, almost heard, in my mind "A real Islamic Hero!!! Jihad Joe is there...."

Actually, I had closed the quote. The part after it was my own addition... There was no need for the both of you to think that I was quoting Mr. Simpson. COngratulations on a superb memory recall...

GenX, GenY...doesn't matter. I was annoyed by pathetic college kids when I was in college, I am annoyed by them now--especially when one thinks dyed hair and a piercing is "edgy". It's just funner to watch their ideals get ground into nothing when they come out of college all shiny and hopeful. Another Vietnam would sort them all right out. THe Persian Gulf War ended before it could really impact my generation (i.e. give them a goddamn clue that the world doesn't revolve around them).

No Victory Garden for me...

Besided, most of them are white rednecks and the upper-class have egos so big that...

Dumbass, you have no idea where the hell El Paso is do you? I'd like you to come down here and try to find a dozen redneck upper-class kids going to Montwood HS. You know what? You won't. The other post about Mexicans is far more accurate.

And yes, I live in El Paso.

These are the farking rejects that will be whining about not getting a tax break in 10 years. Get a job, parasites.

2003-01-29 06:18:11 PM
i had a hard enough time sitting through 90 minutes of college lectures.

to ask me to have done that in high school would've been insane. i'd have been put on ritalin so quickly ...

Block scheduling worked great for me back in High School. This kids today, a bunch of whiny, spoiled brats.

One can only take so much dark sarcasm.

I wonder if the student makeup has anything to do with this?
