We had Bossy speaking at a work seminar/show thing a couple years back, very classy guy.

Oh man, stuff about the Isles that's good? It's like Christmas.

Too bad I was born after the dynasty.

Used to go to his restaurant every day for lunch. He was a bit of a dick, always telling everbody what to do.

Bossy is often overshadowed by Gretzky, but he was a far superior player than Gretzky for many years. Too bad his career was cut short by back injuries. I remember how Gretzky biatched and whined one season because he and Bossy tied for the scoring title, but they gave the award to Bossy because he had more goals.

You can feel free to bring up Bossy, but if Ovechkin played back then he would score 100 goals. You can't even compare the difficulty of scoring against a stand up goalie versus the modern butterfly styles - not to mention the size of the pads these days.

Ovechkin's goal was better, Bossy's more important. Move along.

Ovechkin's goal last night or the one against the Coyotes?

You cannot raise with something of a lesser value.

The spin move to beat the defender in the neutral zone was more impressive than Bossy shooting while falling on his face.

Ovechkin is also much faster, much stronger & has a mean streak...

LOL WUT

Bossy never won a scoring title. IIRC, the only players to win scoring titles in the 80s were Dionne, Gretzky, and Lemeuix.

Bossy was one of the all time great goal scorers, to be sure. But saying he was better than Gretzky is silly.

And has to play against trap defenses with a supporting cast diluted by overexpansion.

Although you can't really compare players from different eras. If Ovechkin played back then he wouldn't have the trainers, workout regimen, etc that he has today. All athletes today are bigger, faster, and stronger than the ones in the past because training techniques and diet plans get better over time.

But he way the game is played today definately makes it lower scoring today than it was in the 80s.

50 in 50 was impressive, but I fear that with the goal tending of today Bossy would be a 40 goal scorer.

If the goaltenders still stood up then Bossy would really be a footnote. 50 in 50 would have been done every few years.

/Blame Roy

Gretzky also had 50 goals in 39 games, so the 50 in 50 deal is ok, but pales mightily in comparison.

/still remember watching Gretz score the 5 goals against Philly to clinch the 50 in 39

Bossy was my favorite player growing up and I loved the Isles before hockey became unwatchable in the last 10 years or so (except for Pens games), but man that video sucked very, very much. Terrible song, ultra-cheesy production, and like 2 actual highlights. Just awful.

But non of the guys in todays game has to deal with all the hooking, holding, grabbing goons etc. The game doesn't take the guts it used to in order to be successful.

Think if Bossy and Gretz etc got all the hooking calls and interference calls guys like Crosby etc get. They would have scored at least as many goals as they did.

Indeed. It's a shame he never coached the Bruins. I asked him once about it at Fenway (yes, Fenway, not the Garden. This was at a Sox game). He said he would have loved to, but his knees were too far gone. A true class act, that one.

Kids today have no respect for the dynasties of yesteryear.

I bet this Ducks Fan remembers the Lakers teams in the 80's.

Pronoun overload, does not compute.

We're getting into subjective speculation here, but consider that even with all of the powderpuff penalties that are called today, there still isn't anywhere near the scoring you saw in the Gretzky/Lemuiex era.

The league needed to call more penalties and institute a bunch of other rules because when the Devils stuck Martin Broudeur in goal behind a nuetral zone trap defense, every game was ending 1-0 or 0-0. The ruleset that let goons run wild just isn't compatable with the strategy and goaltending used today. If the league is going to attract viewers, there needs to be some way for players to score.

That was "ducks" (small d) as in "/writer ducks to avoid thrown puck," not "Go Ducks."

I definitely remember when the Islanders were good - it's just that I've heard "nine-teen for-ty" enough times that it's burned into my skull and I'll take any cheap shots at them I can get.

I prepared myself to voluntarily watch a hockey video.
Then the cheesy graphics started.
Then Van Halen started playing.
It was too much.
I shut off the computer and ran from the room- and stepped in cat vomit in the hallway.
In my socks.

Now I'm waiting for Mormons to come to my door so that I can share my pain and loathing.
