God, if I read one more article about "Asymptotic Behavior of Dynamic Equations on Time Scales" I'm going to scream. That's all you hear about these days.

2003-01-29 01:53:46 PM
Just reading the word 'calculus' is making my head hurt already. Please make it stop.

2003-01-29 02:09:58 PM
Woohoo! Fark's getting smarter! Farkers are getting migraines :)

o O ( Oooo and this seems to be the 5th guy from Rolla - any asp/db coders in here? )

Anyways, it's interesting to see that he found equations to calculate stuff like this: "It can model insect populations that are continuous while in season, die out in winter, while their eggs are incubating or dormant, and then hatch in a new season, giving rise to a non-overlapping population."

Very intersting... I just hope they don't make Dynamic Calc a requirement for my Math minor! I'm almost done with it. Hehe.

By any chance does the Unified Theory include anything about calculus threads dying a swift, painless death ?

I like the part where it says:

‹Ý\énÃœ8¶þà ýl5& à ÚW;vÍulgÚsã$°Ýhô¯€*±ªÃ"â€"D IÙ]Á}ŸyËù)©$Õbyɝ‹k ±òl3¯Ã"ëýúú¸Ã-;¹:q/v»}vÂ¥x¢CÊ„G½ÞégoôÃf³žÌLè· à ~o ˜ÐDbt9E2'
To me, it's the purest math.

Ugh. Can they come up with a theory of "Why Calculus is useless?"

I wonder if there is a connection between higher learning and smoking chiba? Just down the road.

Read the article and you decide.

2003-01-29 03:39:11 PM
So what do you farkers think? Applied math or Pure Math? I just can'd decide!

hmn.....pure math - the stuff of legends....... :P

2003-01-29 03:41:51 PM
Am I understanding this correct but all it is doing is taking discrete calculus and non-discrete calculus and combining them? I don't see how time scales would affect a discrete function enough to be applied to non-discrete calculus, or am I not understanding the meaning of time scales?

WTF? I have no clue what this is even about. I even passed calculus and I have no idea. Way too many bongs ago apparently.

Hey im a newbie member here at fark and I have a dumb question, I have created a pic for the photoshop contest yet I can't figure out how to insert my pic into the comments can anyone please help?

Comments from farkers who are too lazy to even try to understand simple math in 3, 2, 1...

2003-01-29 03:47:14 PM
I've taken three levels of college Calculus, then a course on Differential Equations (requirement for my major).

At the time it seemed so easy, but I've forgotten just about all of it, so this unified theory is completely foreign to me.

2003-01-29 03:47:45 PM
Calculus... she is the biggest biatch of them all

2003-01-29 03:48:39 PM
I KNOW there's a joke I can make about my penis in here somewhere, but I just can't seem to think of it at the moment.

Oh well, carry on, I'll be back shortly.

Applied math is for pussies.

Can anyone find the actual paper online and post a link? I would, but I probably can't.

2003-01-29 03:50:57 PM
If the Unified Theory states that calculus kicked my ass in college, then it must be true.

Unluckyimmortal

applied math is for engineers who build things

john nash used numerical methods (engineering style) to solve some huge pure math problems

2003-01-29 03:57:33 PM
Big deal. So he can integrate or differentiate across discontinuities. I can prove there is no justice in the world. He did all this work for a tiny fraction of the money an 18-year-old girl got today for being born to the right parents.

BTW, I got two more slide rules yesterday, a Pickett N4-ES and a K&E 4081-3. I now own 13 slide rules. Oops! my nerd side is showing. Ahem! I also got some new saddlebags for my Harley Davidson Superglide.
