ftfa:

The district usually sends about 20 kids to the state bee, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain News and Scripps Howard. With the Rocky's future uncertain as well, Weickum was concerned about the fate of that bee and e-mailed Scripps, who assured her the 2009 bee would continued as planned.
that's a nice touch

The event is usually a big deal complete with balloons, snacks, T-shirts and plaques for the winners, said Weickum, who has been overseeing the district spelling bee for about 13 years.

Then make the event a small deal complete with a microphone and some chairs. Don't biatch, moan, and whine about cutting a program to make people feel education funding is inadequate.

Why? Either do it well or don't do it at all. What kind of a message are you sending when you make it a small deal? Are you saying this year's kids aren't worth as much as the other years?

if the phonetic rules of your language make so little sense that you can make a contest out of spelling it, you have bigger problems that the budget for said contest.

I'd have gone with "pannic." I don't know why. For some reason the double-n is more visually humorous to me.

/I'm sure everyone was wondering

I do rather wonder if they bother with spelling bees in Germany.

Kind of a non-story, although all we really need it to be is a reason to make spelling jokes. They're still having the bee, just without the T-shirts and other spendy shiat.

The real story is in the "Other News" section at the top of the page: "$300K in dog jewelry stolen."

When my wallet gets a little thin, I cut out some of the extravagant spending in my entertainment and food budget. I expect a public school to do the same. The message being sent to the children is fiscal responsibility. It has nothing to do with the "worth" of the kids. Sounds like you missed that life lesson when you were a kid.
