InmanRoshi: It's a good (if overrated) graphic novel, but the nerd one-upsmanship it inspires where one has to proclaim from the mountain top that it means more to him than pu$$y and beer combined so everyone will know he's "hipper than thou" is farking pathetic.

I more or less agree. Honestly, while I understand the narrative role of "The Black Freighter" bits, they really dragged the whole thing down for me. Yes, yes- they're really important to the literary aspect of the work, but they were boring.

So, in that, at least, the movie will be improved. I think if I had read The Watchmen when it was new, I would have been more impressed, but I kinda read backwards through the history of the deconstruction of comics, so by the time I got to The Watchmen it seemed old hat.

mfaby: Saw an ad for it the other day and it looks like that bad movie with Samuel L. that came out a few months ago.

I wouldn't go that far. Just going on the trailers, the director of The Watchmen knows how to structure and frame a shot, while Frank Miller obviously does not.

mfaby: it's not like it's LOTR I,II or III.

Ugh. I watched them once. They were impressive bits of filmmaking, but I'll never watch them again. They were more watchable than the books were readable- I hated the books. Tolkien is an awful, awful writer.

Star Trek V was the best of them all.

I thought Howard The Duck was better, but I am also fond of Spiderman 3.

I'd like to stay and chat but Elektra is on TV and it's my favourite movie of all time.

That's ok, I'm going to go watch my Criterion Collection DVD of The Phantom.

Transformers.

I heard it borrows heavily from 'KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park'. While some may consider it unoriginal or even downright plagiarism, if it can channel even one percent of the unbridled awesome of that cinematic gem, I don't see how the Academy can ignore it and maintain its integrity!

IMHO no movie I've ever seen has ever been as good as the book. There have been some that have come close and then there are those like Jurrasic Park that bends the book over and buttfarks it. The guy did a pretty god job translating 300 to the screen I'll give it a chance.

Wing Commander might be the greatest film in cinema history. That or Speed 2: Cruise Control.

Obviously if you hated the books you aren't going to be thrilled with the movies, especially in the case of these particular books/movies. I read the books in my much younger days and loved them. As for the Watchmen, never read it but the movie looks intriguing.

Tr0mBoNe: albo: but the ending will be near impossible to get right. I have no idea what he's talking about. Nor do I wish to find out... he was rather passionate about it.

I accidentally-on-purpose read something from a source that is fairly credible discussing how the end is handled. I won't go all spoiler on you, but if it happens like I read, it's a different path that gets to the same destination. If it wasn't bullshiat, it sounded fairly intriguing and shouldn't goof up the story at all for anyone who isn't a rabid fanboy.

How about Jaws? Much better movie than book.

Also, The Godfather certainly gives the book a run for it.

Also, Die Hard? Who even reads the book that was based on anymore? I think the movie can definitely be better than the book, it just has to go in a different (more visual) direction. Like The Shining, for example*.

I've been following the Watchmen threads here on Fark for a while now, and I've got to say I want to know how in the hell I missed this book when it came out? I was 14 in 1986. I've never been dress up in costume and go to comic con geek, but I was an avid comic reader with a decent collection and had plenty of geek acquaintances. SOMEHOW I should have at least HEARD of it. Nope, nada, nothing till the movie talk started up here.

Kinda the point - the "major plot points" have been published for a very, very long time. If the movie's plot points are different from the book's plot points, it's a mess on the face of it. Imagine if Peter Jackson had changed "major plot points" with Tolkien's work? Say, oh, I dunno, changed the friggin' ending?
