Terrible headline, subby.

To clarify, the cop was the one making unwanted comments to wimmins. The wimmins were with the attackee.

Asshat.
But on the plus side, the cop isn't "on paid administrative leave pending an investigation".

This shiat is never going to stop until we mandate the death penalty for cops convicted of committing assault.

I can remember during the 1980's when it was common to see Baltimore police officers drinking while on duty and in uniform.

Once while in a strip club, I turned to see a Baltimore cop standing there in uniform drinking a big mug of beer shouting obscenities at the stripper while she worked. The stripper was completely nude which was technically against the law at the time.

I don't know that many people would continue to be cops if that law was put into effect.

I am for harsher punishments for police officers when they are on duty (not the death penalty), but this guy was off-duty so he should be treated just like a normal person.

Too bad that never happens. Even in this case, while he is suspended (presumably without pay) as opposed to given a vacation with pay, he does not appear to have been arrested and thrown in jail. Which, of course, is what would happen to a "normal person".

/Granted, he may have been arrested and the article just omitted it.
//But, I doubt it.

First sentence of the article: Anthony M. Stevenson, a Baltimore police officer who lives in Abingdon, has been charged with second-degree assault and reckless endangerment and suspended from the force after a man was struck in a Bel Air bar a week ago.

FTA: Bel Air Police Sgt. J.C. Lockard, who was at the bar doing a routine business check when the incident occurred, found the victim being held in a chokehold and made the arrest, officials said

People really do just see what they want to see.

You can be charged without being arrested, right? However, you are right, I missed the arrested part.

Wow, my hometown finally made FARK. And it was Looney's Pub of all places, where the drudge of Harford County go to copulate and drink themselves into oblivion. The best part is that all the bouncers there are off-duty police officers, which is how the arrest came about so quickly. These weren't Bel Air police just walking into the place.

1. In order to uphold the law, police officers are given special powers that ordinary citizens do not have.
2. With power comes responsibility.
3. Inability to act responsibly means that the officer can not be relied upon to wield that power with responsibility.

Therefore, he can not do his job as an officer of the law, and should be fired. Immediately after a guilty verdict.

If that was too abstract for your liking, consider the following scenarios:
What if the women he was abusing get raped, and he is to take their statements?
What if the guy he bashed wants to contest a speeding ticket?

No. First off, a cop is never considered to be off-duty. Secondly, a cop is expected to have a far greater understanding, respect, and dedication to the law than regular citizens.

If a regular guy drives and drinks, you'd think ill of him - but if an anti drunken driving campaigner gets caught doing it, you'd think far worse of him. QED.

Uh... I'm pretty sure that any butcher, baker or candlestick maker would be arrested, convicted, and thrown in jail for at least six months after smashing a beer bottle over a guy's face, giving him lacerations that required hospitalization. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but I interpret your post as suggesting that this guy is somehow accruing more outrage because he happens to be a cop. All we want is to preempt the likely event of him getting a lighter sentence than you or I would.

I'd put the on duty that cop that arrested the other guy and actually wrote it all up properly as part of the 99%.

Our local fuzz used their stun guns on a State Trooper who was drinking and started a bar fight. He had used a pool cue to beat somebody up prior to the fuzz showing. He claims he dropped the pool cue and surrender, the fuzz claims he was a threat to them so they had to zap him a few times.

Huh? I'm against the abuse of power, but that's nuts.

What I'd like to see, however, is the law applied equally in such situations - there are way too many cases where, simply because of the law enforcement position, such alleged criminals are held to a different standard, especially when it comes to sentencing.

This.

Granted, I do get irritated when people try to place police officers on some moral high ground. It's ridiculous. They're just normal people out trying to do a job and occasionally they make some stupid mistakes.

Most of the cops I've dealt with have been very nice and very respectful. However, there is still a negative attitude towards cops by many people. If they want to correct that issue they need to stop covering for those cops who screw up. Once people see that cops also take responsibility for their actions and actually enforce the laws upon themselves as well I think many people's perceptions of them will change.
