(National Post)   Ten years ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs played their last game in legendary Maple Leaf Gardens. Nearing collapse, the once-proud fan favorite is almost in ruins. But enough about the team, the old building is in great condition   (nationalpost.com) divider line

It could be worse. We could be as bad as the Senators.

I'm an NHL fan and I got a kick out of the headline.

No, I think being a leafs fan is still worse. I mean at least Ottawa had a few winning seasons and the trades and things they make at least look like they are trying.

/just thought i would get in before this turns into a " HABS SUCK" thread, as per usual

As a Buffalo Sabres fan, I always enjoy a good Maple Leafs pile-on.

Did you start watching Hockey in 2005 or something?

Anything to deal with having to live in Buffalo right? ;)

It would be nice to one day see the Leafs win a stanley cup. Then we can get our first picture in colour of the team after.

I remember watching that game on HNiC. Glad they ended the Garden's reign with an Original 6 match up. Bob Probert scored the final goal in the Garden that night.

Haha - once again, yes - I'm a Leafs fan.
Still - that is some funny shiat. I never tire of people slamming my team. I was actually at the last MLG game and I saw RUSH there! Great building! I left TO about 5 years ago - last I heard it was being changed into a grocery store/condos - any updates? (The building not the team.)

/ Habs suck! (for Malcolm_Sex's benefit)

Someone should try to get the building from Bob Loblaw, but I hear he doesn't listen to offers, and goes on and on and on when speaking.

You say that like it's already happened. Clouston is trying to pull a Boudreau.

/it might actually work
//definitely finishing ahead of the Leafs.

I know there's a great history to MLG, but man do I not miss that place. Unless you were sitting in golds, most of the seats sucked. The bathrooms were gruesome. Those pee troughs still give me nightmares.

Even though the ACC has no "soul" I'd much rather watch a game there. And at six foot four I can actually fit into the seats, which is nice.

The problem is, the land is really valuable, the building is not (in pure $ terms, sentimentally it's priceless). The building facade has been designated historically important, the only way to build on the land is to incorporate the facade, which is really expensive. So, the current plan appears to be demolition by neglect. You let the builidng deteriorate to the point where you have to demolish it. Voila, it frees up the land with only the demo costs. You can now build you McCondos.

It sucks that they suck (although they look like a different team entirely under Clouston) but it's kind of inevitable that there's going to be a downturn eventually - unless you're Detroit. I'm okay with a bad season so long as they show improvement.

I take a bit of solace that the Leafs goal this year was to suck, but we're actually out-doing them. We're even better at being bad.

Oh, so THAT's what their doing to the city of Detroit! I should have figured that out. :)

Still waiting for the demolition part of the plan to kick in though.

Why isn't it spelled Tourountou? doesn't every "o" require a "u" subsequently?

Bingo.

I always surprises me how soon people forget about the Leaf's successes (yah, I know that REAL success is winning the cup, sigh) over the last 10 years or so. They've missed the playoffs three years running, but thats all in the post-lockout era. They were doing pretty good before that.

1998-99 - Made it to Conference Finals
1999-00 - Made it to Conference Semi-Finals
2000-01 - Made it to Conference Semi-Finals
2001-02 - Made it to Conference Finals
2002-03 - Out in the first round (damn Flyers)
2003-04 - Made it to Conference Semi Finals

Aaannd then the lockout, which hurt financially successful teams like the Leafs, Ranger and Flyers the most.

IMO, they're still digging themselves out from the implementation of the cap. I guess that's what a strategy of "buy, don't draft" will do to you.

Anyway, up until the draft, they were doing quite well, and in the playoffs - right, Sens fans?

I miss the old buildings. Maple Leaf Gardens, Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium on Rush St, The Aud, The Forum, The Great Western Forum, etc. Most arenas are so cookie-cutter similar now.
