This is a block from my house, maybe a little more. I was on the computer when it happened. There was engine noise, which isn't unusual as we're on a flight path, which ended with a loud bang. I ran downstairs, saw the sky just to the north absolutely lit up red, with a white strobing light as well. I called 911, but the lines were jammed.

After the crash, I heard two small pops, and one larger secondary explosion, all some time after the crash.

The crash is near some local restaurants and shops, a day care, and less than 100 yards from the Clarence Center volunteer fire hall. Other departments responded amazingly fast. Right now there's a minor smell in the air, but we're thankfully downwind.

Local news doesn't have a lot of details. Not sure where the Buffalo News is getting its info from, but it seems pretty consistently reported that it was a fifty passenger plane - whether or not it was full is not known yet.

Some reports indicate that at least some of the people in the home hit got out safely. I'm a little freaked as one of my coworkers lives right near the house that was hit - it may even be next door.

Clarence Center is a hamlet in the Town of Clarence. Doesn't look like much from this image, but Clarence is a very well-off 'burb.

I'm in the flight path for four airports. Two of the larger ones in the country, one medium sized, and one small. Small aircraft are always going over at 300-400 feet, right over the high tension lines a block away. My wife is amazed that an airplane hasn't landed on us yet.

Just tonight, a 737 flew over our house lower than 1500 feet. Large jets have never been that low here before...

That is because the coverage is being provided by CNN International so the feed you see on CNN is going out to a lot of different countries around the world. I guess all the USA CNN people are already in bed.

SpinStopper: judge-z: This is a block from my house, maybe a little more.

A BLOCK from your house? HOLY SHIAT! I'm glad you're okay!

I'm not trying to be calloused, but do you have a camera? Not necessarily for us, either. The more eyes, the better.

I have a camera, but there are people who live closer and have already taken as clear a shot of what's happened as you're going to see. They're all over the local news right now. I can't actually see the plane or the house from here - there's trees and other houses in the way. I could see the fire trucks as they left the station, and was wondering why they were moving at a crawl - the proximity of the crash would explain it.

I have no desire to be a media whore, but am totally willing to share what I have personally heard and saw.

BTW, they are now confirming 49 dead. One on the ground in that total.

I'm mildly freaked, mainly because my brain immediately went through all of the coworkers and students that I have living in that direction. As someone said, we're a pretty close knit community.

I'm just glad that my first instinct was to call 911. You never know how you'll react in situations like this until they happen. Holy shiat did I get the shakes after, though.

shawnshawnery: Hey judge-z, what did it sound like?

Well, I'm piecing together part of what I heard in retrospect. I was actually playing a game with headphones on, but had them turned down low (so I can hear my daughter if she wakes up). I heard what sounded like normal engine noise - the planes go pretty much over our house this time of night - ending with a moderate sounding bang, then no more engine noise. I did not hear a crash, and by the time I got to a window, I could see fire.

After calling 911, there were two or more smaller popping sounds, and a few minutes later another, louder bang similar to the first.

The last two plane crashes: one was caused by bird strikes to both engines and by the looks of it this one is probably due to weather (really too early to tell). How does that have to do with regular maintenance?

Weather today was really shiatty earlier on, but what we have right now isn't all that bad, honestly. Wet snow, bit of rain, no real freezing on the ground. Wind isn't that bad at all - 10-15 mph, when we had over 60mph winds this morning. Planes land here in much, much worse all the time. The most reputable local weather dude suggested he would be shocked if weather was a factor.

the most surreal thing? While this has been going on, a half dozen to a dozen other planes have landed on the same flight path, as if nothing was amiss. I'd hate to be on those planes - I've flown that path, and you can CLEARLY make out ground features at that altitude *we're just 5 miles out from the runway).

I'm way too exhausted to look it up, but you are spot on. The statistical odds of everyone on a plane dying in a crash are actually much lower than most people think. Matter of factly, the numbers are skewed to the high side because the freak event of Sept 11th (four plane crashes in one day with 100% fatalties) and I'd really love to see Ahab try and jack another Amercian plane in the next century.

Yikes. I've flown out of Newark on a those smaller Continental planes many times. I've even been on some of their prop planes like the one that went down.

I was on one of their tiny jets when one of the control surfaces in the tail jammed up. I was sitting in the last row and it was the scariest noise I've ever heard a plane make.

The pilot had to turn back and land using just the wing flaps. I was the last one off and trust me, I shook his hand and thanked him.

True... but the engineers maintaining the QF flight from BKK to LHR won't have heard of this. Likewise, BKK commuter flights that drop out of the sky will likely have no effect in the US besides a maintenance bulletin if the manufacturer sends one out.

Rough translation: Winds out of the WSW at 12 knots, overcast with low clouds. (I don't know what the fields after AO2 mean, but having fields like that generally means that the weather isn't good)

I haven't gotten to page two of comments, but that means freezing rain began at 0458Z after the hour (so, 11:58 PM EST), ended at 11:59, and snow ended at 11:58 (a little backwards chronologically, but makes sense). The SPECI METAR was issued at 12:05 AM.

Basically, it's mixed precip - and that's on the ground. My guess is that a couple of thousand feet aloft it's much worse, as it often is along a frontal boundary. Freezing rain is the absolute worst thing you can fly into besides a tornado or large hail (some would argue worse than hail).

It's early, but I'm going with severe icing.

Dimensions might be the same, but configurations are not.

I think they might've been trying to cram more seating in the CRJs I've been in. Noticably less leg room. Also, the seats have less space underneath for your feet/bags that won't fit in the damn overhead bin.

WGRZ (via CNN) has eye-witness who saw the crash and didn't mention anything about flames. Apparently, he lives one house away from the crash site. He said the plan was coming down at a steep angle, slight bank to the left, and heading "in the opposite direction" from where the plane should have been going (he seemed familiar with the paths to/from that airport). I know eyewitness reports are typically terribly inaccurate, so I don't put much faith in any of this yet.

Try flying in a crappy, ancient floatplane over the Canadian wilderness where you are rendered almost deaf from the noise of the engine, there's fuel fumes in the cabin and the floor and seats are duct taped together. The problem with eye-witnesses is that it basically comes down to a bad case of Rashomon.

In my haste to post (sorry), I forgot to mention the temp/dewpoint spread. Surface temp is 1 celsius and dewpoint is zero (freezing) with 4 miles visibility and mist. I'll bet that's an icy mist, too. The ceiling is 500 feet variable to 1100 feet. That means they probably didn't see the ground until they were damn near in it (shudder).

Here are METAR reports from the last 3 hours, before they're gone to the archives:

Pilots out there will note that these, in order from bottom to top, indicate a cold front passage right near the time of the accident. It was probably fairly light weather right before they ran headlong into it. Clear ice in freezing rain builds up fast.

RIP, condolences, and all that.

I've been watching the local news here since 11. Its extremely tragic, especially since I know the guy that was interviewed by channel seven that has to make a phone call to his parents vacationing in florida that their daughter- his sister- is dead; and also to his kids that their aunt, who was supposed to go with them to kindergarten tomorrow, is dead. even though the interview is pre-deathtoll update, its saddening.

This tragedy will send ripples throughout the community for years. I almost dont WANT to see the pictures that come out after daybreak.

Well, fark. I know some of those kids. About as bad as earlier when a group of kids pulled up in a car behind an anchor doing a live shot a couple hundred feet from my house, and started mugging for the camera. The driver kept moving his car to stay in frame, as the cameraman was trying to have none of that. I wanted to break their fingers.

The poor reporter was visibly shaken - she lives in town near where the crash happened, and it looked like she had either been in bed or about to go to bed when she was pressed into service. She was shivering, either from the cold or stressed, and there, behind her, was a car full of jackasses trying to get on TV.

I don't think overwhelming means what you think it means. Unless the odds have gone up of course.

Let's say I'm not a pilot of a private aircraft. What are my odds of dying in a private aircraft crash? About zero. Assuming I wasn't a passenger on Flight 1549, what are my odds of an Airbus I'm on landing in The Thames tomorrow? About zero.

It's just ridiculous speculation. Should I wonder around aimlessly in my car with the thought that, "Well, I have a very slim chance of being killed if I run this stoplight."

after that a few posts later it's pointed out that it is most likely a limitation of the feed, and the transmission just wasn't recorded by liveATC but it was made. if indeed they did not, then ATC didn't catch it either which would be abnormal.

make me some tea: Pave_the_Planet: Idk if anyone cares, but you can go to WGRZ, WIVB, or WKBW for live and local coverage.

Thanks. WIVB seems to be the only one with live streaming video.

Yeah, I really think WGRZ sucks, especially with their constant self-promotion (every 10 seconds, they say to go to their website for more info) and their new obsession with Skype. All of the other channels have better video now, even of last night's ice jams/floods because they weren't using crappy webcams.

ramathorn83: rppp01a: rko281: Just an accident - a highly inefficient way to dispose of New Yorkers.

Wrong side of the state. The Western side is the good side. You want to focus on the southeastern side.

Lived in Buffalo for 1 year. Loved it: good people, good times, relatively affordable cost of living. Economy sucks, but that's really my only gripe.

I've been to NYC twice and thoroughly enjoyed myself there during both visits. Don't know if I'd actually want to take up residence in NYC.

The poor economy of the 80s forced my family west to Arizona. I have long missed western NY for so many reasons. I'll always be a Bills fan and a fan of the people there.

2009-02-13 01:51:08 AM
According to airliners.net (if it is the actual plane that crashed), this Dash-8 was built last year. FWIW...

I flew on one of these a couple of years ago. I kept staring at the wing surfaces as we were coming in for a landing. It was around 40F. I was thinking of those poor barstards on that flight that crashed in Roselawn, Indiana.

2009-02-13 01:51:27 AM
I'm gonna guess that if the plane wasn't deiced as some are speculating in Newark, the pilot flew head on into a freezing mix and probably, due to the approach pattern, encountered a layer of ice buildup that was either not corrected at all or over corrected. I'm no pilot, just a buff, but it all seems possible.

RIP, really sad on all accounts

deltabourne: blameitonchemo: deltabourne: blameitonchemo: rko281: Just an accident - a highly inefficient way to dispose of New Yorkers.

Were you wishing for a bigger plane?

PS: Hey New York. You're not doing so hot with the whole "flying" concept. Do we need to have a "Come-to-Jesus" meeting?

Sullenberger is a Texan (where Continental is based out of) and we don't know who the pilot of this plane was from. United Airlines is based out of Illinois.

What was your point again? What does NY have to do with any of this?

Well if I have to connect the dots for you, that's fine. All I was pointing out was that NY is having trouble keeping birds in the sky. Planes get into NY and shiat goes haywire.

So your point was that the crashes had nothing to do with weather, pilot skills, or mechanical problems -- but with the geopolitical location of the airspace the plane was in at the time.

Yeah. Makes sense.

/I see you're in North Carolina

And you NYers wonder why you have such a reputation.

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband" ...
"Drowned by the ocean" ...
"Shot by his own son" ...
"She used a poison in his tea,
Then (she) kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies.

Don't look me at like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other (you)
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child,
Watches him die,
Hands to the sky cryin "why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die from a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

I need to watch things die from a good safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain fallin' down
Drum on grave and ground

Part vampire, part warrior,
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal.
Sing to the death rattle.

Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men.
But pull your head on out (of) your hippie haze
And give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been ...

We all feed on tragedy.
It's like blood to a vampire.

Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.

Last contact with CO 3407 was at ~16 min. At ~17 min, repeated calls for the aircraft were not answered and a nearby aircraft could not make visual contact.

Eerily similar to the American Eagle crash in IN some years back...prop plane, in bad weather, just dropped out of the sky...

As one who enjoys the friendly skies on a smaller scale - Is it me, or did the Pilot sound mildly garbled in all the communications. That concerns me a lot more than the weather conditions. Seems pretty typical IFR for this time of year.

My prayers and condolences to the victims and families of this horrible tragedy.

/on another subject, the Dash-8 has always bothered me.

There's something trying to break through at 16:17, right after 3407's last transmission, but it's too weak to hear.

I'm not sure, not long enough. In fact, it was pretty cut-off. It's weird that an emergency wasn't declared.

But the beginning of the approach clearance readback was a "different" voice. It got better, pulled together-like as she finished, but in the beginning there was stress that wasn't there before.

I hate to sound crass, but we should reserve all the "Never forget" stuff for terrorist attacks, major natural disasters (Katrina) or Columbine lunatic killing spree type events. so far, this just looks like a bad accident. Tragic? Yes. But most people are going to forget (not like they should, but accidents are on a different level).

spamdog: I'll take "Slamming into pavement at 300km/hr+" for $200, Alex.

Depending on the angle of the impact, there might have been enough cushion from the crumpled bodies and seats in the front and middle of the plane to only seriously maim those in the back, allowing them to perish in a blazing hellfire afterward.

El Morro: judge-z: This is a block from my house, maybe a little more. I was on the computer when it happened. There was engine noise, which isn't unusual as we're on a flight path, which ended with a loud bang. I ran downstairs, saw the sky just to the north absolutely lit up red, with a white strobing light as well. I called 911, but the lines were jammed.

Dude, that is INSANE. It just wasn't your time, it seems. Not to freak you out, but if the pilot just moved the controls mere inches, or if the accident happened a second and a half sooner/later/whatever, that sh*t could have just as easily landed on YOUR house.
Count your blessings.

Amen. Thank God you're okay judge. Can you talk about what's happening and everything you see? I'm hearing about just a unbelievable crater. This fire seems so massive, I don't even know how the firefighters would address it.

Just a suplemental forecast, but there is a forecast of SLD (supercooled liquid drops - freezing rain) over northwestern PA, and with the vagaries of frontal passage, that's close enough to BUF to be a threat.

People, PLEASE...

There's nothing wrong with cracking jokes about something tragic. Life is unfair and terrible sh*t happens. BUT, if you're going to do it, DO IT RIGHT.

Posting pics of Buffalo wings, or cracks about the pilot being a woman are examples of "picking the low hanging fruit." It's lazy and weak. It's the equivalent of trying to make people laugh by making a fart sound by putting your hand in your armpit and flapping your arm up and down.

I was about to give up hope until I read this:

Sir Cumference the Flatulent: That's doubly tragic. Not only are they dead, they're in Buffalo.

THAT'S how it's supposed to be done!

I think CLYDTSF was thinking something similar to me, that it's irritating sometimes when people get really bent out of shape over complete strangers' hardship, while in their daily lives it's highly unlikely they would consider other people before themselves. Perspective as in: O RLY you care about people so much that this reaction you're having isn't based on transient emotion?

I know thats unrelated but the liberal MSM never talks about it and I think it deserves a mention. These mexicans are headed northwest and will soon reach Alaska. Imagine the last thing these people thought while falling from the air. Transsexual libs like you could never understand, but these people were STRAIGHT and had families, they never thought this would be there last day alive when they boreded the jet. Really? No one else was pretty damn offended by this?

...Chris Kausner of Clarence, whose sister Ellyce was aboard the flight, told The Buffalo News that after he heard about the crash, he called another sister who had gone to pick her up at the airport to see if her plane had landed.

"She said that they told them the plane had landed and was taxiing, but that was not the case," he said...

My Silence Cannot Be Bought
by Beverly Eckert

I've chosen to go to court rather than accept a payoff from the 9/11 victims compensation fund. Instead, I want to know what went so wrong with our intelligence and security systems that a band of religious fanatics was able to turn four U.S passenger jets into an enemy force, attack our cities and kill 3,000 civilians with terrifying ease. I want to know why two 110-story skyscrapers collapsed in less than two hours and why escape and rescue options were so limited.

I am suing because unlike other investigative avenues, including congressional hearings and the 9/11 commission, my lawsuit requires all testimony be given under oath and fully uses powers to compel evidence.

The victims fund was not created in a spirit of compassion. Rather, it was a tacit acknowledgement by Congress that it tampered with our civil justice system in an unprecedented way. Lawmakers capped the liability of the airlines at the behest of lobbyists who descended on Washington while the Sept. 11 fires still smoldered.

And this liability cap protects not just the airlines, but also World Trade Center builders, safety engineers and other defendants.

The caps on liability have consequences for those who want to sue to shed light on the mistakes of 9/11. It means the playing field is tilted steeply in favor of those who need to be held accountable. With the financial consequences other than insurance proceeds removed, there is no incentive for those whose negligence contributed to the death toll to acknowledge their failings or implement reforms. They can afford to deny culpability and play a waiting game.

By suing, I've forfeited the "$1.8 million average award" for a death claim I could have collected under the fund. Nor do I have any illusions about winning money in my suit. What I do know is I owe it to my husband, whose death I believe could have been avoided, to see that all of those responsible are held accountable. If we don't get answers to what went wrong, there will be a next time. And instead of 3,000 dead, it will be 10,000. What will Congress do then?

So I say to Congress, big business and everyone who conspired to divert attention from government and private-sector failures: My husband's life was priceless, and I will not let his death be meaningless. My silence cannot be bought.

Beverly Eckert, whose husband died at the World Trade Center, is the founder of Voices of September 11th, a victims advocacy group.

As far as the house that was hit goes...4 people live there, Mom, Dad and 2 teen/adult children. Only 2 people have been brought to the hospital. Multiple witnesses saw the mother and 1 daughter on the street after the crash. If we assume that these were the two people who were hospitalized (w/ minor injuries) that leaves the father and daughter unaccounted for. We know one person died.

And an aside... why do we have prop planes anymore at all in commercial flight? My understanding is that jets are a ton more reliable. Less moving parts, better thrust to weight ratio, etc.

Well, on the plus side, I'm not flying on a prop plane. Flying on a Canadair Regional Jet(CRJ). Makes me feel a little better.

/Horrible farking timing.
//Those poor people.

Another moron. The "prop" plane has a turbine engine just like the CRJ. Only difference is the engine on the turbo-prop spins a propeller while the engine on a CRJ spins a fan. Those turbines on the Dash-8's produce about 5000hp per side.

HansensDisease: Yikes.

Keep in mind that the entire crew on your flight was probably paid less than 200 dollars for it. no joke.

2009-02-13 05:27:14 AM
and when i say 200 dollars I mean COMBINED. All their pay added up for that flight probably didn't come close to breaking 200 bucks.

Franco: maintenance

Not hardly. Maintenace is one of those things that airlines cannot cut back. It is all very closely regulated by the FAA.

And even though it was a Continental Express flight, it was owned and operated by Colgan Air. There's probaby provisions in place that says they are reimbursed for wear and tear on the a/c, including maintenance.

2009-02-13 08:10:27 AM
I live in BUF and we watched the "breaking news" thing come across last night. The news reporters kept trying to downplay it by saying "It's just a small plane." One of the local reporters for channel 2 even related how he got out of his car and berated locals who were asking "What airline was it?" because he heard it was a "small plane" and thus not commercial. Even though he heard every firehouse in the county was on alert and while he was talking they showed dozens of ambulances and fire crews kept rolling past, an hour after the crash.

/Submitted this with an equally sad headline
//Condolences to the crew and family and the dude on the ground who died.

I'm surprised more pilots haven't chimed in on the Dash-8's flying record. They probably are flying one right now and can't be bothered with all the children looking for answers on intrawebs.

The plane is all wing. Even without turboprops, it wants to stay up there. It leaves the runway like a freakin helicopter; it leaves the runway like the tarmac was stinging its landing gear. And it lands oh so softly. Great bird.

Enjoy your 737 death-tube rides, kids.

Sue Bourque told the newspaper her sister, Beverly Eckert, was aboard the plane. Eckert is the widow of Sean Rooney, who was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Bourque said that while the family had not yet received official confirmation of her sister's fate, the reality was settling in.

Final Destination's Grim Reaper wanted for questioning.

Before the crash, the voice of a female pilot on Flight 3407 can be heard communicating with air traffic controllers

tweek46420: what I'll never understand is why the news never can have a little respect and shove cameras in the faces of relatives....your sister just dies, how did your mom react.....that's the reason I decided not to try and get a job in the news....also probably why I am not working in the "biz" after getting a degree in TV since you need to get your foot in the door somewhere and i can't afford my own gear yet

Our local station "Tabloid 12" did a report on a kid who was killed by a stray bullet, and they went right up to the front door of the home of the victim and reported live, on the private property, without permission. The brother of the victim came out and said quite a few things that resulted in the tape being un-airable even with a good censoring. Those sock cuckers deserved it.

I always liked Don Henley's take on this problem:

"I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
Its interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You dont really need to find out whats going on
You dont really want to know just how far its gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre stiff
Kick em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When its said and done we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!"
