Well, what was that home doing hovering around at 30,000 feet?

Oh.

Sorry.

So much for that safety record.

Um, Clarence isn't really Buffalo, Subby. But damn.

I know but who knows what Clarence Center is.

I'm going to hell for this.

but I can't not post it.

The pilot was aiming for the runway but landed wide right.

Oh give me a home
Where the buffalo roam
Where the deer and the antelope play

Where seldom is heard
A discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

They don't yet know how many dead, at least according to CNN. FAA says 48 on board...2 people taken to the hospital...

:((

Should have had Sully piloting it.

//humor's a grieving mechanism

Well, I suppose you can reset that "Days since last fatal accident" counter back to zero, then.

There's one hell of a fire at the crash site. CNN is streaming Skype footage.

I wish my first green link wasnt this one.

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Buffalo?

Was it the wings?

That sucks. RIP, folks :(

threefeetoffun: I wish my first green link wasnt this one.

I hear you.

Clarence Carter?

Robo Beat: Well, I suppose you can reset that "Days since last fatal accident" counter back to zero, then.

When I GIS'd that I got:

threefeetoffun: I wish my first green link wasnt this one.

Congrats?

Holy shiat!

That's kind of scary knowing that I live around here.

I used to sit in the workstation of my friend when she was in school and have my teeth cleaned while watching planes land at that airport.

/is now creeped out and will be eyeing the skies a little closer

Really sad news to hear. Hope these things really don't happen in sets of threes.

cameroncrazy1984: The pilot was aiming for the runway but landed wide right.

Bet those were some hot wings!

That's one hell of a fire.

Interesting that the fire alarm went of at MSNBC.

Here is what it looked like before the plane hit.

Yup, me too.

Announcement in 1 minute.

Damn. Now I feel bad for posting that. I might have known someone on that plane.

They should make the whole plane a black box.

threefeetoffun: I wish my first green link wasnt this one.

Then why did you submit it?

They're now saying one dead on ground.

crypticsatellite: They don't yet know how many dead, at least according to CNN. FAA says 48 on board...2 people taken to the hospital...

Good, once it becomes 50 it's in bad taste to make jokes.

My thoughts ad prayers go to the families of everyone on board.

That's Williamsville, not Clarence. Clarence is just to the east, though.

Clarence center? That's where you can buy plane parts at a deep discount.

KBUF Tower at time of incident (mp3)

Last contact with CO 3407 was at ~16 min. At ~17 min, repeated calls for the aircraft were not answered and a nearby aircraft could not make visual contact.

Eerily similar to the American Eagle crash in IN some years back...prop plane, in bad weather, just dropped out of the sky...

Quantum Apostrophe: Inside job, man. My friend's uncle says he saw demolition crews putting in charges in that house a week ago. Where's the wreckage? It was a cruise missile, and the explosives were for show.

lulz

This is a block from my house, maybe a little more. I was on the computer when it happened. There was engine noise, which isn't unusual as we're on a flight path, which ended with a loud bang. I ran downstairs, saw the sky just to the north absolutely lit up red, with a white strobing light as well. I called 911, but the lines were jammed.

After the crash, I heard two small pops, and one larger secondary explosion, all some time after the crash.

The crash is near some local restaurants and shops, a day care, and less than 100 yards from the Clarence Center volunteer fire hall. Other departments responded amazingly fast. Right now there's a minor smell in the air, but we're thankfully downwind.

Local news doesn't have a lot of details. Not sure where the Buffalo News is getting its info from, but it seems pretty consistently reported that it was a fifty passenger plane - whether or not it was full is not known yet.

Some reports indicate that at least some of the people in the home hit got out safely. I'm a little freaked as one of my coworkers lives right near the house that was hit - it may even be next door.

Clarence Center is a hamlet in the Town of Clarence. Doesn't look like much from this image, but Clarence is a very well-off 'burb.

Damn. Buffalo is a very close-knit, small town-kind of big city, and odds are there's only one or two degrees of separation between anyone in the region and someone on this plane.

On a slightly seperate note, that has to be the absolute suck being hit by a plane while in your house. I live near a flight path where many many many planes land every day and night. Scary thought.

InferiousX: On a slightly seperate note, that has to be the absolute suck being hit by a plane while in your house. I live near a flight path where many many many planes land every day and night. Scary thought.

I'm in the flight path for four airports. Two of the larger ones in the country, one medium sized, and one small. Small aircraft are always going over at 300-400 feet, right over the high tension lines a block away. My wife is amazed that an airplane hasn't landed on us yet.

Just tonight, a 737 flew over our house lower than 1500 feet. Large jets have never been that low here before...

SirGnarls: And why does WNY get farked over by everyone? From CNN: "Commuter plane crashes in the US State of New York"

That is because the coverage is being provided by CNN International so the feed you see on CNN is going out to a lot of different countries around the world. I guess all the USA CNN people are already in bed.

SpinStopper: judge-z: This is a block from my house, maybe a little more.

I'm not trying to be calloused, but do you have a camera? Not necessarily for us, either. The more eyes, the better.

I have a camera, but there are people who live closer and have already taken as clear a shot of what's happened as you're going to see. They're all over the local news right now. I can't actually see the plane or the house from here - there's trees and other houses in the way. I could see the fire trucks as they left the station, and was wondering why they were moving at a crawl - the proximity of the crash would explain it.

I have no desire to be a media whore, but am totally willing to share what I have personally heard and saw.

BTW, they are now confirming 49 dead. One on the ground in that total.

I'm mildly freaked, mainly because my brain immediately went through all of the coworkers and students that I have living in that direction. As someone said, we're a pretty close knit community.

I'm just glad that my first instinct was to call 911. You never know how you'll react in situations like this until they happen. Holy shiat did I get the shakes after, though.

My favorite question to answer is "Oh yeah? How do you like the city?"

Well that sure sucks.

I flew over the Cascades in one of those DeHavillands, through a storm on a December evening. Never really worried but it was definitely the roughest plane ride I have ever had. And it was piloted by two blonde women to boot...

shawnshawnery: Hey judge-z, what did it sound like?

Well, I'm piecing together part of what I heard in retrospect. I was actually playing a game with headphones on, but had them turned down low (so I can hear my daughter if she wakes up). I heard what sounded like normal engine noise - the planes go pretty much over our house this time of night - ending with a moderate sounding bang, then no more engine noise. I did not hear a crash, and by the time I got to a window, I could see fire.

After calling 911, there were two or more smaller popping sounds, and a few minutes later another, louder bang similar to the first.

Officials announcing sleet and rain combination is what caused the plane to crash.

CNN is saying it is unknown if there are any survivors.

This has been happening because of the airlines companies have been scaling back on regular farking maintenance. There is zero excuse for this kind shiat to happen.

Weather today was really shiatty earlier on, but what we have right now isn't all that bad, honestly. Wet snow, bit of rain, no real freezing on the ground. Wind isn't that bad at all - 10-15 mph, when we had over 60mph winds this morning. Planes land here in much, much worse all the time. The most reputable local weather dude suggested he would be shocked if weather was a factor.

the most surreal thing? While this has been going on, a half dozen to a dozen other planes have landed on the same flight path, as if nothing was amiss. I'd hate to be on those planes - I've flown that path, and you can CLEARLY make out ground features at that altitude *we're just 5 miles out from the runway).

judge-z: After calling 911, there were two or more smaller popping sounds, and a few minutes later another, louder bang similar to the first.

OK, I was just wondering, because I live in South Florida right over the flight path to Ft. Lauderdale International.

Your heart must be beating so rapidly right now. Glad you're ok, and I'll be praying for the victims and their families. This is just terrible news.

Franco: This has been happening because of the airlines companies have been scaling back on regular farking maintenance. There is zero excuse for this kind shiat to happen.

Not necessarily. S**t happens, and no matter how much maintenance you perform, s**t will still happen.

As shiatty as the weather has been today, I'm suprised they were even allowed to try to fly.

Dash-8 seats 49 people? Hmm, some seat up to 78 (new window)

One of my favorite planes. It's just like riding the bus, but with wings.

I think Sully cheated Death, and Death is catching up.

I really feel for them. I'm from Buffalo/Grand Island -- it's a small town, and there's gonna be a lot of broken-hearted folks there tonight.

//I'll look up the PBS documentary that stated it

I'm way too exhausted to look it up, but you are spot on. The statistical odds of everyone on a plane dying in a crash are actually much lower than most people think. Matter of factly, the numbers are skewed to the high side because the freak event of Sept 11th (four plane crashes in one day with 100% fatalties) and I'd really love to see Ahab try and jack another Amercian plane in the next century.

The pilot repeated her clearance to land on runway 23 at 15:20.

Her last contact - abbreviated (my speculation: as though she was under duress at that point) - was at 16:08.

After a long pause, the radio briefly opens up at 16:49 with no transmission.

At 17:01, tower begins to call out for CO 3407 with no response.

True... but the engineers maintaining the QF flight from BKK to LHR won't have heard of this. Likewise, BKK commuter flights that drop out of the sky will likely have no effect in the US besides a maintenance bulletin if the manufacturer sends one out.

MSNBC just had witness claim that the plane was already on fire before it crashed.

Given the popularity and age of the Dash-8 design, there've been very FEW incidents with them.

Rough translation: Winds out of the WSW at 12 knots, overcast with low clouds. (I don't know what the fields after AO2 mean, but having fields like that generally means that the weather isn't good)

I haven't gotten to page two of comments, but that means freezing rain began at 0458Z after the hour (so, 11:58 PM EST), ended at 11:59, and snow ended at 11:58 (a little backwards chronologically, but makes sense). The SPECI METAR was issued at 12:05 AM.

Basically, it's mixed precip - and that's on the ground. My guess is that a couple of thousand feet aloft it's much worse, as it often is along a frontal boundary. Freezing rain is the absolute worst thing you can fly into besides a tornado or large hail (some would argue worse than hail).

WGRZ (via CNN) has eye-witness who saw the crash and didn't mention anything about flames. Apparently, he lives one house away from the crash site. He said the plan was coming down at a steep angle, slight bank to the left, and heading "in the opposite direction" from where the plane should have been going (he seemed familiar with the paths to/from that airport). I know eyewitness reports are typically terribly inaccurate, so I don't put much faith in any of this yet.

Pilots out there will note that these, in order from bottom to top, indicate a cold front passage right near the time of the accident. It was probably fairly light weather right before they ran headlong into it. Clear ice in freezing rain builds up fast.

RIP, condolences, and all that.

Most of my experiences on late night regional flights involve lots of empty seats.

This. And you're also going to have stories of people missing that connection because of inbound flights that were delayed, especially since it originated in Newark.

From the ATC link provided above, it sounds like a lot of pilots talking about icing issues.

Which Farker is which?

I've been watching the local news here since 11. Its extremely tragic, especially since I know the guy that was interviewed by channel seven that has to make a phone call to his parents vacationing in florida that their daughter- his sister- is dead; and also to his kids that their aunt, who was supposed to go with them to kindergarten tomorrow, is dead. even though the interview is pre-deathtoll update, its saddening.

This tragedy will send ripples throughout the community for years. I almost dont WANT to see the pictures that come out after daybreak.

Sounds like Little Rock all over again.

Little Rock? Bad weather, but different error chain. I'm going with Roselawn.

Eerily similar to the American Eagle crash in IN some years back...prop plane, in bad weather, just dropped out of the sky...

As one who enjoys the friendly skies on a smaller scale - Is it me, or did the Pilot sound mildly garbled in all the communications. That concerns me a lot more than the weather conditions. Seems pretty typical IFR for this time of year.

I hope you and your family are ok. I'm still going to have to wait til morning to find out if any of my friends were in the surrounding areas. It seems like what happened is the end of it-I need to know who was on that plane though before I feel better.

Well, fark. I know some of those kids. About as bad as earlier when a group of kids pulled up in a car behind an anchor doing a live shot a couple hundred feet from my house, and started mugging for the camera. The driver kept moving his car to stay in frame, as the cameraman was trying to have none of that. I wanted to break their fingers.

The poor reporter was visibly shaken - she lives in town near where the crash happened, and it looked like she had either been in bed or about to go to bed when she was pressed into service. She was shivering, either from the cold or stressed, and there, behind her, was a car full of jackasses trying to get on TV.

Not true. Even if you do crash, the odds are overwhelming that you would survive.

I don't think overwhelming means what you think it means. Unless the odds have gone up of course.

Let's say I'm not a pilot of a private aircraft. What are my odds of dying in a private aircraft crash? About zero. Assuming I wasn't a passenger on Flight 1549, what are my odds of an Airbus I'm on landing in The Thames tomorrow? About zero.

It's just ridiculous speculation. Should I wonder around aimlessly in my car with the thought that, "Well, I have a very slim chance of being killed if I run this stoplight."

rppp01a: 15:22 - Last contact with 3407

It's more like 16:08.

According to airliners.net (if it is the actual plane that crashed), this Dash-8 was built last year. FWIW...

I flew on one of these a couple of years ago. I kept staring at the wing surfaces as we were coming in for a landing. It was around 40F. I was thinking of those poor barstards on that flight that crashed in Roselawn, Indiana.

I'm gonna guess that if the plane wasn't deiced as some are speculating in Newark, the pilot flew head on into a freezing mix and probably, due to the approach pattern, encountered a layer of ice buildup that was either not corrected at all or over corrected. I'm no pilot, just a buff, but it all seems possible.

RIP, really sad on all accounts

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband" ...
"Drowned by the ocean" ...
"Shot by his own son" ...
"She used a poison in his tea,
Then (she) kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies.

Don't look me at like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other (you)
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child,
Watches him die,
Hands to the sky cryin "why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die from a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

I need to watch things die from a good safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain fallin' down
Drum on grave and ground

Part vampire, part warrior,
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal.
Sing to the death rattle.

Credulous at best
Angels in the hearts of men.
And give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal

Last contact with CO 3407 was at ~16 min. At ~17 min, repeated calls for the aircraft were not answered and a nearby aircraft could not make visual contact.

Eerily similar to the American Eagle crash in IN some years back...prop plane, in bad weather, just dropped out of the sky...

As one who enjoys the friendly skies on a smaller scale - Is it me, or did the Pilot sound mildly garbled in all the communications. That concerns me a lot more than the weather conditions. Seems pretty typical IFR for this time of year.

My prayers and condolences to the victims and families of this horrible tragedy.

There's something trying to break through at 16:17, right after 3407's last transmission, but it's too weak to hear.

rash: Charlie Freak: Wow, she was shaking when they cleared them for the approach. Big time. They knew they were in trouble.

I disagree.. I am at the part when they cleared her to switch to tower...sounded fine.

I'm not sure, not long enough. In fact, it was pretty cut-off. It's weird that an emergency wasn't declared.

But the beginning of the approach clearance readback was a "different" voice. It got better, pulled together-like as she finished, but in the beginning there was stress that wasn't there before.

Based on the weather charts, icing may have been a factor. Pretty low dewpoint depressions at 850mb at Buffalo.

You must be new here. That was given out about 350 posts ago. A lot of us have listened to it a few times.

carlyparker: Can'tLetYouDoThatStarFox: FiendishFellow05: Intelligent_Man: Is this what they look like now?

You, asshole, are not funny. Grow the f--k up, seriously. People are dead, lives are shattered, irrevocable changes have occured. And YOU think it's FUNNY to post a picture of buffalor wings and make a joke about the passengers?

/farking Pee-Wee thinks he's a comedian.
//Asshole.
.........

A plane crashed. People died. It's over. Nothing anybody can do about it now. Posting "RIP" or "OMG once I drove through Rochester and that's only an hour from Buffalo!" doesn't help anything.

If those people were still alive and saw the joke on Family Guy or South Park, many of them likely would have found it funny. Get some perspective.

Ha. So warped.

You're both saying the same thing btw, with similar outrage. 'How DARE you make jokes!'
'How DARE you question these jokes made while the wreckage still burns!'
Get some perspective!

I think CLYDTSF was thinking something similar to me, that it's irritating sometimes when people get really bent out of shape over complete strangers' hardship, while in their daily lives it's highly unlikely they would consider other people before themselves. Perspective as in: O RLY you care about people so much that this reaction you're having isn't based on transient emotion?

I think too much.

Imagine the last thing these people thought while falling from the air. Transsexual libs like you could never understand, but these people were STRAIGHT and had families

really do you know for a fact that not one person on this plane was gay....why would that even matter are you a homophobe if so grow up

The United States mourns them just as we mourned the people lost in the Challenger explosion,

guess what there were jokes about that too

And let us not forget the people in the southwest who are killed by illegal immigrants everyday. I know thats unrelated but the liberal MSM never talks about it and I think it deserves a mention. These mexicans are headed northwest and will soon reach Alaska. If they reach the midwest we are all done. Open your eyes people

so you are a homophobe and a rasict nice

Really? No one else was pretty damn offended by this?

...Chris Kausner of Clarence, whose sister Ellyce was aboard the flight, told The Buffalo News that after he heard about the crash, he called another sister who had gone to pick her up at the airport to see if her plane had landed.

"She said that they told them the plane had landed and was taxiing, but that was not the case," he said...

My Silence Cannot Be Bought
by Beverly Eckert

I've chosen to go to court rather than accept a payoff from the 9/11 victims compensation fund. Instead, I want to know what went so wrong with our intelligence and security systems that a band of religious fanatics was able to turn four U.S passenger jets into an enemy force, attack our cities and kill 3,000 civilians with terrifying ease. I want to know why two 110-story skyscrapers collapsed in less than two hours and why escape and rescue options were so limited.

I am suing because unlike other investigative avenues, including congressional hearings and the 9/11 commission, my lawsuit requires all testimony be given under oath and fully uses powers to compel evidence.

The victims fund was not created in a spirit of compassion. Rather, it was a tacit acknowledgement by Congress that it tampered with our civil justice system in an unprecedented way. Lawmakers capped the liability of the airlines at the behest of lobbyists who descended on Washington while the Sept. 11 fires still smoldered.

And this liability cap protects not just the airlines, but also World Trade Center builders, safety engineers and other defendants.

The caps on liability have consequences for those who want to sue to shed light on the mistakes of 9/11. It means the playing field is tilted steeply in favor of those who need to be held accountable. With the financial consequences other than insurance proceeds removed, there is no incentive for those whose negligence contributed to the death toll to acknowledge their failings or implement reforms. They can afford to deny culpability and play a waiting game.

By suing, I've forfeited the "\$1.8 million average award" for a death claim I could have collected under the fund. Nor do I have any illusions about winning money in my suit. What I do know is I owe it to my husband, whose death I believe could have been avoided, to see that all of those responsible are held accountable. If we don't get answers to what went wrong, there will be a next time. And instead of 3,000 dead, it will be 10,000. What will Congress do then?

So I say to Congress, big business and everyone who conspired to divert attention from government and private-sector failures: My husband's life was priceless, and I will not let his death be meaningless. My silence cannot be bought.

Beverly Eckert, whose husband died at the World Trade Center, is the founder of Voices of September 11th, a victims advocacy group.

As far as the house that was hit goes...4 people live there, Mom, Dad and 2 teen/adult children. Only 2 people have been brought to the hospital. Multiple witnesses saw the mother and 1 daughter on the street after the crash. If we assume that these were the two people who were hospitalized (w/ minor injuries) that leaves the father and daughter unaccounted for. We know one person died.

VonBumpus: Beverly Eckert is the chairwoman of Voices of September 11th. Sean Rooney died during the collapse of Tower 1 and was on the phone with Beverly at the time. /Horrible farking timing.
//Those poor people.

Another moron. The "prop" plane has a turbine engine just like the CRJ. Only difference is the engine on the turbo-prop spins a propeller while the engine on a CRJ spins a fan. Those turbines on the Dash-8's produce about 5000hp per side.

HansensDisease: Yikes. I've flown out of Newark on a those smaller Continental planes many times. I've even been on some of their prop planes like the one that went down.

I was on one of their tiny jets when one of the control surfaces in the tail jammed up. I was sitting in the last row and it was the scariest noise I've ever heard a plane make.

The pilot had to turn back and land using just the wing flaps. I was the last one off and trust me, I shook his hand and thanked him.

Keep in mind that the entire crew on your flight was probably paid less than 200 dollars for it. no joke.

and when i say 200 dollars I mean COMBINED. All their pay added up for that flight probably didn't come close to breaking 200 bucks.

Turbo-Plop?

Seriously though, this is very sad.

I blame Obama.

A good friend of mine is from Clarence. Thank God she was here at school at the time.

Worst reporting line.

Matt Ackland (think that is his last name) on FOX:

"The owner of the plane is Cogan Air which operates 53 planes, 52 as of last night."

My boss lives about a mile from the crash site; I have a sinking feeling that he knows the guy whose house was hit (they are the same age and he knows some people on that street).

Why does this plane have no wings? Looks like a X-Plane.

Franco: maintenance

Not hardly. Maintenace is one of those things that airlines cannot cut back. It is all very closely regulated by the FAA.

And even though it was a Continental Express flight, it was owned and operated by Colgan Air. There's probaby provisions in place that says they are reimbursed for wear and tear on the a/c, including maintenance.

I live in BUF and we watched the "breaking news" thing come across last night. The news reporters kept trying to downplay it by saying "It's just a small plane." One of the local reporters for channel 2 even related how he got out of his car and berated locals who were asking "What airline was it?" because he heard it was a "small plane" and thus not commercial. Even though he heard every firehouse in the county was on alert and while he was talking they showed dozens of ambulances and fire crews kept rolling past, an hour after the crash.

//Condolences to the crew and family and the dude on the ground who died.

I'm surprised more pilots haven't chimed in on the Dash-8's flying record. They probably are flying one right now and can't be bothered with all the children looking for answers on intrawebs.

The plane is all wing. Even without turboprops, it wants to stay up there. It leaves the runway like a freakin helicopter; it leaves the runway like the tarmac was stinging its landing gear. And it lands oh so softly. Great bird.

Enjoy your 737 death-tube rides, kids.

I am very upset and saddened by you Fark. We're almost 700 points in and no one has mentioned Donnie Darko.

You can update the death toll now. NPR is reporting that there was a fifth crew member on board the plane.

I don't think overwhelming means what you think it means. Unless the odds have gone up of course.

I know exactly what it means. "Crash" doesn't mean what you think it means. Airplane crashes very rarely involve a craft dropping out of the sky.

Wow. This is the first time I realized that FARK had a night shift.

Should be a whole new wave of comments starting.

But Bush isn't president anymore. How can there be plane crashes when Bush isn't president? Weren't all the plane crashes all Bush's fault?

Sue Bourque told the newspaper her sister, Beverly Eckert, was aboard the plane. Eckert is the widow of Sean Rooney, who was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Bourque said that while the family had not yet received official confirmation of her sister's fate, the reality was settling in.

Final Destination's Grim Reaper wanted for questioning.

Before the crash, the voice of a female pilot on Flight 3407 can be heard communicating with air traffic controllers

There's your problem, NTSB. No need to look any further.

adamgreeney: I am very upset and saddened by you Fark. We're almost 700 points in and no one has mentioned Donnie Darko.

It wasn't a jet.

Day shift clocking in.
Sorry I'm late.

1 dude on the ground, wow.
Someone really wanted that man dead.

/I lol'd

dbirchall: adamgreeney: I am very upset and saddened by you Fark. We're almost 700 points in and no one has mentioned Donnie Darko.

Not to mention that DD got mentioned A LOT in this thread... so was that sarcasm or stupidity on AG's part?

Geez, I grew up in that area, and I'm wondering how many friends of friends died last night. My dad is making calls to see what the final count on the "seven degrees" meter is.

Man On Pink Corner: blameitonchemo: Beverly Eckert is the chairwoman of Voices of September 11th.

Aw, man, the troofers are going to stroke this thing until it squirts hair gel.

Thinking she got Ron-Browned ?

edmo: Wow. This is the first time I realized that FARK had a night shift.

Apik0r0s: Why does this plane have no wings? Looks like a X-Plane.

Something about a high-aspect ratio wing being efficient...

tweek46420: what I'll never understand is why the news never can have a little respect and shove cameras in the faces of relatives....your sister just dies, how did your mom react.....that's the reason I decided not to try and get a job in the news....also probably why I am not working in the "biz" after getting a degree in TV since you need to get your foot in the door somewhere and i can't afford my own gear yet

Our local station "Tabloid 12" did a report on a kid who was killed by a stray bullet, and they went right up to the front door of the home of the victim and reported live, on the private property, without permission. The brother of the victim came out and said quite a few things that resulted in the tape being un-airable even with a good censoring. Those sock cuckers deserved it.

I always liked Don Henley's take on this problem:

"I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em all around

Comes on at five
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
Its interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You dont really need to find out whats going on
You dont really want to know just how far its gone
Just leave well enough alone

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre stiff
Kick em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When its said and done we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!"

US Air +1
Continental -1

Damn, looks like even Al-Qaeda's feeling the pinch in this economy...

This isn't exactly the kind of news I want to read 3 hours before I fly home from Toronto... I know flying is still much safer then driving, but I always feel so bad for the families of those in the crash when I hear about this stuff, then I think about mine... well, away I go

AirForceVet: Really sad news to hear. Hope these things really don't happen in sets of threes.

Oh crap. I just realized I'm flying down to Florida in several hours on Friday, the 13th.

/Somebody hold me.

This^ on the 'seven degrees' matter. Only it will be my Mom.

huh....so THAT'S what it looks like to be hit by the fist of an angry god

/to soon?

Franco: This has been happening because of the airlines companies have been scaling back on regular farking maintenance. There is zero excuse for this kind shiat to happen.

this seems like a well informed and logical conclusion to jump to. oh wait, no it doesnt. MY theory is apace goblins caused the crash.

seriously- how about this for a theory: the more times things go into the air that are heavier than air, the more times those things will land in ways other than intended. period. there is no such thing as a perfectly safe way to fly, or to live for that matter.

Apik0r0s: Why does this plane have no wings? Looks like a X-Plane.

Well, as of now, it is an "ex-plane."

Pre-disastered house (new window)

(Not a RR.)

the day walkers are coming

Look, they haven't rules out terrorism yet. If it is, we're gonna fark em up!!

Local Man: The pilot repeated her clearance to land on runway 23 at 15:20.

Her last contact - abbreviated (my speculation: as though she was under duress at that point) - was at 16:08.

Wait, her last contact?

I think we've found out the cause of the crash: They let a woman drive.

Kierkegaard's Pseudonym: blameitonchemo: Have anyone addressed if anyone was IN the house? And how many pair of pajama pants were promptly shat?

The occupant of the house was identified as one Donald Darko.

Damn it! You made me laugh! Promised myself I wouldn't.... Basterd......

Sir Cumference the Flatulent: That's doubly tragic. Not only are they dead, they're in Buffalo.

All the people posting cracks about Buffalo (aside from being classless) apparently don't realize that Clarence is a generally very upscale and affluent suburb of Buffalo. Probably as nice a place to live as anywhere in the country. But whatever.

I'm from Buffalo, but moved away. Fly into and out of that airport all the time. Sad news.
