Franco: maintenance

Not hardly. Maintenace is one of those things that airlines cannot cut back. It is all very closely regulated by the FAA.

And even though it was a Continental Express flight, it was owned and operated by Colgan Air. There's probaby provisions in place that says they are reimbursed for wear and tear on the a/c, including maintenance.

I live in BUF and we watched the "breaking news" thing come across last night. The news reporters kept trying to downplay it by saying "It's just a small plane." One of the local reporters for channel 2 even related how he got out of his car and berated locals who were asking "What airline was it?" because he heard it was a "small plane" and thus not commercial. Even though he heard every firehouse in the county was on alert and while he was talking they showed dozens of ambulances and fire crews kept rolling past, an hour after the crash.

/Submitted this with an equally sad headline
//Condolences to the crew and family and the dude on the ground who died.

I'm surprised more pilots haven't chimed in on the Dash-8's flying record. They probably are flying one right now and can't be bothered with all the children looking for answers on intrawebs.

The plane is all wing. Even without turboprops, it wants to stay up there. It leaves the runway like a freakin helicopter; it leaves the runway like the tarmac was stinging its landing gear. And it lands oh so softly. Great bird.

Enjoy your 737 death-tube rides, kids.

I am very upset and saddened by you Fark. We're almost 700 points in and no one has mentioned Donnie Darko.

You can update the death toll now. NPR is reporting that there was a fifth crew member on board the plane.

Sun God: sinanju: Sun God:
Only if you don't crash.

Not true. Even if you do crash, the odds are overwhelming that you would survive.

I don't think overwhelming means what you think it means. Unless the odds have gone up of course.

I know exactly what it means. "Crash" doesn't mean what you think it means. Airplane crashes very rarely involve a craft dropping out of the sky.

Should be a whole new wave of comments starting.

But Bush isn't president anymore. How can there be plane crashes when Bush isn't president? Weren't all the plane crashes all Bush's fault?

Sue Bourque told the newspaper her sister, Beverly Eckert, was aboard the plane. Eckert is the widow of Sean Rooney, who was killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Bourque said that while the family had not yet received official confirmation of her sister's fate, the reality was settling in.

Final Destination's Grim Reaper wanted for questioning.

Before the crash, the voice of a female pilot on Flight 3407 can be heard communicating with air traffic controllers

There's your problem, NTSB. No need to look any further.

Not to mention that DD got mentioned A LOT in this thread... so was that sarcasm or stupidity on AG's part?

Geez, I grew up in that area, and I'm wondering how many friends of friends died last night. My dad is making calls to see what the final count on the "seven degrees" meter is.

Apik0r0s: Why does this plane have no wings? Looks like a X-Plane.

Something about a high-aspect ratio wing being efficient...

tweek46420: what I'll never understand is why the news never can have a little respect and shove cameras in the faces of relatives....your sister just dies, how did your mom react.....that's the reason I decided not to try and get a job in the news....also probably why I am not working in the "biz" after getting a degree in TV since you need to get your foot in the door somewhere and i can't afford my own gear yet

Our local station "Tabloid 12" did a report on a kid who was killed by a stray bullet, and they went right up to the front door of the home of the victim and reported live, on the private property, without permission. The brother of the victim came out and said quite a few things that resulted in the tape being un-airable even with a good censoring. Those sock cuckers deserved it.

I always liked Don Henley's take on this problem:

"I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
Its interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You dont really need to find out whats going on
You dont really want to know just how far its gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre stiff
Kick em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When its said and done we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!"

This isn't exactly the kind of news I want to read 3 hours before I fly home from Toronto... I know flying is still much safer then driving, but I always feel so bad for the families of those in the crash when I hear about this stuff, then I think about mine... well, away I go

Franco: This has been happening because of the airlines companies have been scaling back on regular farking maintenance. There is zero excuse for this kind shiat to happen.

this seems like a well informed and logical conclusion to jump to. oh wait, no it doesnt. MY theory is apace goblins caused the crash.

seriously- how about this for a theory: the more times things go into the air that are heavier than air, the more times those things will land in ways other than intended. period. there is no such thing as a perfectly safe way to fly, or to live for that matter.

Local Man: The pilot repeated her clearance to land on runway 23 at 15:20.

Her last contact - abbreviated (my speculation: as though she was under duress at that point) - was at 16:08.

Wait, her last contact?

I think we've found out the cause of the crash: They let a woman drive.

Sir Cumference the Flatulent: That's doubly tragic. Not only are they dead, they're in Buffalo.

All the people posting cracks about Buffalo (aside from being classless) apparently don't realize that Clarence is a generally very upscale and affluent suburb of Buffalo. Probably as nice a place to live as anywhere in the country. But whatever.

I'm from Buffalo, but moved away. Fly into and out of that airport all the time. Sad news.

Rochester suburbs here.
Not sure I'd call Clarence upscale.
We think of Clarence as a giant flea market
because it's A GIANT FLEA MARKET.

Poverty rate is only 1.9%. It's not a poor community.

Not that it matters, because it would be a tragedy anywhere. But I get tired of the ignorant cracks about Buffalo. Like most other cities, it's a diverse metro area, with some poor urban areas, some really nice urban areas, some working class suburbs, and some wealthier suburbs.

Pave_the_Planet: tweek46420: make me some tea: tweek46420: wow a widow of a 9/11 victim died in a plane crash

is that ironic?

Very.

Who exactly?

not sure about the name but CNN said buffalo news is reporting that, i am at work so can only pay half attention to the tv across the room

/the computer in front of me is a diffrent story

WIVB is reporting right now that it was Beverly Eckert, widow of Sean Rooney.

Eckert was traveling to Buffalo for a weekend celebration of what would have been her husband's 58th birthday (new window)

irony sucks

Yeah, good luck with that

Apik0r0s: Why does this plane have no wings? Looks like a X-Plane.

I am betting the tiny wings are a contributing factor to the problems this model has had. With wings that small there is no way they can generate enough lift to let the pilot "glide" it down like the USAir pilot did.

2009-02-13 10:12:36 AM
palad: "The crash is near some local restaurants and shops, a day care, and less than 100 yards from the Clarence Center volunteer fire hall. Other departments responded amazingly fast. Right now there's a minor smell in the air, but we're thankfully downwind."

Someone likes the smell of charred corpses in the morning. Smells like... hickory.

And this kids, is why we proofread. Left off a not, there, obviously.

Fire is still going - they now know that the crash touched off a natural gas fire, and finally have it under control. NTSB people are all over the place, and helicopters have been flying overhead fairly regularly. Apparently body recovery and the search for the black boxes are now beginning.

Schools in town were canceled today. I still haven't heard if anyone I know is hurt or was on the plane. With only 50 people on board from an area with close to a million in the metropolitan area, I'm hoping statistical chance means no. I'm pretty sure that one of my coworkers is at least temporarily homeless, though.

As to speculation as to what kind of town Clarence is, it is probably the most affluent of Buffalo's suburbs. Yes, we have a giant flea market, but that flea market takes place on the rounds of a huge antique co-op anchored by a high-end antique furniture store. The town is a strange mix of new and old. The newer developments are quite affluent, while some neighborhoods are more middle class, with a healthy dose of agriculture thrown in. Clarence Center is a hamlet within the town, and is the oldest settlement in Erie County.

The house that was hit is on a street with older houses, and is a much more blue collar part of town, while at the same time is literally around the corner from some upscale shops and a more traditional diner.

And not a whole lot of wing surface area to work with when icing starts.

That wing is extremely high aspect, wtf?

2009-02-13 10:20:40 AM
A 9/11 widow was on the plane. I bet Ann Coulter is cackling with glee about that. biatch.

2009-02-13 10:25:11 AM
I'm already leaning towards pilot error here. There were other aircraft in the area, they all managed to make it down somehow. Even with those ridiculously small wings, the pilot(s) must have contributed greatly to this accident.

The last commercial crash in the US was also a "regional" carrier - piloted by dumbasses who can't read a compass and a twenty foot number painted on the runway in front of them.

There's a reason the most of the pilots flying these little toys are not driving 777s across oceans.

Get on the plane flown by the B Team at your own risk.

2009-02-13 10:30:18 AM
Sorry all. I was just saying we didn't know of it's affluence. We just know of Clarence's flea market because it's farking famous.
Last time I visited I bought some beautiful silver dollars and a fantastic antique writing desk.

You all heard 'flea market' like it was a bad thing.
Wrong. It's capitalism at it's finest.
And who doesn't like to haggle?

Wrong, the Dash 8 has very high-lift wings and can probably glide better than an A-320. Do you think it stays aloft by power alone? Come on, educate yourself. The thinness (high aspect ratio) of the wings actually contributes to lift efficiency, much like a glider.

Now, if you want to start talking about the impact of ice on unswept, high-aspect wings, or things like aileron reversal, let me know.
