Not at all. She probably wished you were on a downed plane at once. She doesn't take well to non-fans.

Much thanks for sharing through this, Judge-Z...

And an aside... why do we have prop planes anymore at all in commercial flight? My understanding is that jets are a ton more reliable. Less moving parts, better thrust to weight ratio, etc.

I a fallen Catholic, a non believer, but some things they taught you, you never forget, and this is what automatically came out of my mouth when I heard about this tragedy when I woke up:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let your perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

I just hope they didn't suffer much. The families and friends of those poor souls will be in my thoughts. Christ, what a horrible thing to happen.

Freepers are in full Whargarrbl mode.

From a different board, I found a great summary page here (new window) put together by a guy who breaks down the events in some pretty basic, no nonsense terms.

/not my site
//kudos to the guy who put it together
///includes compacted ATC audio for those who haven't heard it yet

Franco: This has been happening because of the airlines companies have been scaling back on regular farking maintenance. There is zero excuse for this kind shiat to happen.

You sir, are an idiot.

2009-02-13 05:17:37 AM

cameroncrazy1984: WBEN in Buffalo is saying approach controller confirmed final approach and that was last contact. Female pilot.

If you're talking on the radios then you're not flying. That's how it works. One person pilots the plane the other talks on the radios.

2009-02-13 05:24:07 AM

FiendishFellow05: RoyBatty: sinanju: Yeah, I know, [citation needed]

If he had a citation, he wouldn't have to be flying on a old rattling twin prop held together with duct tape and rancid grease. (And I think you're scaring him too.)

Well, on the plus side, I'm not flying on a prop plane. Flying on a Canadair Regional Jet(CRJ). Makes me feel a little better.

/Horrible farking timing.
//Those poor people.

Another moron. The "prop" plane has a turbine engine just like the CRJ. Only difference is the engine on the turbo-prop spins a propeller while the engine on a CRJ spins a fan. Those turbines on the Dash-8's produce about 5000hp per side.

2009-02-13 05:26:19 AM

HansensDisease: Yikes. I've flown out of Newark on a those smaller Continental planes many times. I've even been on some of their prop planes like the one that went down.

I was on one of their tiny jets when one of the control surfaces in the tail jammed up. I was sitting in the last row and it was the scariest noise I've ever heard a plane make.

The pilot had to turn back and land using just the wing flaps. I was the last one off and trust me, I shook his hand and thanked him.

Keep in mind that the entire crew on your flight was probably paid less than 200 dollars for it. no joke.

2009-02-13 05:27:14 AM
and when i say 200 dollars I mean COMBINED. All their pay added up for that flight probably didn't come close to breaking 200 bucks.

Cold_Sassy: I actively avoid commuter flights:

Which type of flying is safer?

Type of Flight Fatalities per million flight hours:

Airliner (Scheduled and nonscheduled Part 121) 4.03

Commuter Airline (Scheduled Part 135) 10.74

Commuter Plane(Nonscheduled Part1 35-Air taxi on demand 12.24

General Aviation (Private Part 91) 22.43

Reporter: "Will the weather affect rescue efforts or the investigation?"
Eric county Commissioner: "No. This is Buffalo. Next question."

I'm in France right now, and this has made news over here. Having lived in Buffalo, I have flown in and out of that airport many, many times. I hate flying. I've even seen that turboprop on the runway at the airport. This accident has really shaken me up. My thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved.

Why bother? I mean, they're pretty much equals in the armpit rankings.

Aw, man, the troofers are going to stroke this thing until it squirts hair gel.

2009-02-13 06:42:11 AM
I just woke up and as usual when I wake up I turn on the tv to the news. The first thing I saw was that beverly eckert died in the crash. I'm pretty sure that beverly eckert was my 7th grade teacher in the early 90's. What a farked up way to start the morning.

It reminds me of Little Rock because it was late night in marginal weather. Little Rock didn't divert and tried to stick it in because od company policies that frowned on having to pay for hotels and such.

nstoppiello: LegacyDL: So one person on the ground died including all the passengers on the plane according to buffalo radio.

1 dude on the ground, wow.

Someone really wanted that man dead.

I really did my best not to laugh at anything in this thread.

Well, so much for that!

Worst reporting line.

Matt Ackland (think that is his last name) on FOX:

"The owner of the plane is Cogan Air which operates 53 planes, 52 as of last night."

2009-02-13 07:55:45 AM
My boss lives about a mile from the crash site; I have a sinking feeling that he knows the guy whose house was hit (they are the same age and he knows some people on that street).

Franco: maintenance

Not hardly. Maintenace is one of those things that airlines cannot cut back. It is all very closely regulated by the FAA.

And even though it was a Continental Express flight, it was owned and operated by Colgan Air. There's probaby provisions in place that says they are reimbursed for wear and tear on the a/c, including maintenance.
