Ok, so what the fark? Is mentions nothing about reparations. If they try the "Oh, we screwed up and took away 2 years of your life, our bad" thing, I'm gonna start thinking that we might need to try to revive McVeigh, and let him go at the Department of Corrections.

That is horrible. It's one thing to hold a person in jail who should not be there who is competent enough to stand up for themselves. It is completely different to hold someone of his mental ability, or lack thereof.

I just thank gawd he wasn't in Texas. He probably would already be dead.

The deaf guy's name is "Heard"

The sad thing is, because he has a mental illness, they will take advantage of the situation and sweep this under the carpet.

It sucks being crazy....

;(

what? WHAT???

No, what's gonna happen is this:

The hospital he's now in is a public hospital. The guy will probably be declared a ward of the state, if he's not independently mentally competent. Some bright accountant or lawyer at the hospital will initiate a lawsuit against the DOC on the victim's behalf. They will then administer the proceeds of the suit, for the victim's benefit (since the State is the victim's legal guardian).

In other words, money will be shifted from one department of the government to another, and the victim will be equally destitute, only having traded a jail cell for a hospital bed.

Sounds a lot like they played dumb (pardon the pun) on this one.

We used to chain people nekkid to a wall when
they were deemed "ill".
Prison is like a **** hotel to this joker.

He apparently never complained about being behind bars, corrections officials said.

That would be a funny comment if this was an Onion article, but it's quite depressing that someone would actually say this.

"Heard was unable to communicate with virtually anyone in the jail...He apparently never complained about being behind bars, corrections officials said."

Hrm...makes you kind of wonder. And you would think that in the city that homes Gallaudet, there would be at least one person around who knew a bit of ASL.

and...

"'I do not know why I stayed in jail,' Heard said in the interview, conducted with the aid of an interpreter at St. Elizabeths and a TTY operator. 'I was not happy in jail.'"

Why on earth would you need an interpreter and a TTY operator? Unless "TTY operator" doesn't mean a relay, but I can only assume that's what they meant.

My father lives in D.C., and I once did, too. The ppl who run the government, there, are complete incompetents [sic?]. This doesn't surprise me at all.

(Btw, if u were to criticize those same ppl for their lack of vigor and weren't of the proper demographic profile, they'd almost certainly whip out the "r" word. Stand operating procedure.)
