It's not Carter's fault that Bush didn't put a strong presence on the ground in Afghanistan because he was busy getting his rocks off about Iraq. If we had given Afghanistan the attention it deserved back in '01, maybe we would be further along in this "tougher" war than we are right now.

GaryPDX: And Pakistan has open revolt by the Taleban. Last I heard the Swat Valley had fallen to the Taleban.

Iraq is going to look like a drop in the bucket.

Ever read Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson? Or watched Charlie Wilson's War? We could have spent a couple hundred grand a year building schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, getting those people to a middle-school level of education at least- including girls- but instead, we said "fark 'em! No Rooskies, who gives a damn?"

So the Saudis came in instead. Brilliant plan, geniuses.

Anyway, we already lost the war. Over, done. How many American lives wasted for nothing? Bin Laden succeeded far and away above what he could have ever hoped for. Bush and the Republicans leveraged our future for some political points and an excuse to beat the shiat out of some brown people- and look where we are now.

How about Reagan? Bush I? Clinton didn't help any, but at least he friggin' fought the system. And then Bush II, of course, nail in the coffin.

Yeah, I know how that goes. But inbetween medication calculations, patient histories, and general housework, there's nothing left for greenlightable headlines. So +2 for you.

I read that a US base in Kazakstan (I think), north of Afghanstan was closing. The Russians took control of the routes through Georgia, Baku and east last summer. There's only one way in soon, Pakistan. An they are losing it, it's open warfare there.

I don't know we can "win". We had our chance in the 80's and 90's, and we blew it. Even if Dubya had invested in Afghanistan like he should have initially, or, God Forbid, ignored Iraq. Alas.

Hey, at least we poured approximately the same amount of money into Iraq and Afghanistan as we are into the Stimulus. Hurray for protracted overseas wars!

I blame Taft. Seriously, the Russians couldn't get anywhere in Afghanistan. I don't think we can either.

Kyrgyzstan, actually. It's been all over BBC news for the past week- started as posturing by the Russians but looks like it's really going to close now.

What with this and Georgia last year, we might need to abandon our new fangled and useless obsession with terrorism and go back to some good old fashioned Cold War paranoia.

the russians didn't learn from our mistakes in vietnam. and, up till now, i don't think we have either.
If we could, and remember that its not about killing the insurgents, but making the population realize they're better off without the insurgents, then we might have a chance.

This should be required reading for everyone who ever mouths off about the Pakistan/Afghanistan situation.

About a year ago, Obama mentioned that he had read that book, and wanted to talk to Mortenson. I think that's when I really began to pay attention to him.

Oh for crying out loud of course we can't win. Hell, the Soviets pretty much leveled the place and ten or so years later they withdrew because even without political or social pressure they couldn't subdue them. The fact the US thinks it can just shows our decadence and arrogance.

2009-02-08 10:57:05 PM
This comes as a total shock to me, because as history shows us, no outside armed forces have ever had problems in Afghanistan.

Maybe Dubya shouldn't have drawn down troop levels in Afghanistan to dangerously low levels for his own personal war in Iraq. And maybe, as previously mentioned, the US military should learned from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

The U.S. can "win" in Afghanistan. We just have to actually put some resources into it.

Afganistan, like any other combat zone in the world, is tough. It has been, and will continue to be for some time. I can't imagine the new admin came into this thinking otherwise.

Well, we are far and away better equipped for this fight than the Rooskies were, and we are not trying to conquer them, we are trying to root out one of their most hated groups. Those two differences give our fight a better chance of success.

Don't forget that Afghanistan was very modern prior to the Taliban taking over. Women were doctors and did not have to wear burkas, for instance. The Taliban changed all of that and the people there have suffered ever since. We are in country to find Bin Laden and shut down terror camps and eradicate Al Qaida from the area - a task we can accomplish with the help of the Afghan people if we play our cards right.

We need to commit a lot more troops to the region. But more than that, we need to commit more drones and EOD robots. Take a look at P.W. Singer's "Wired for War" to see some of the amazing things we are building to fight there and in Iraq. With the technology we have, applied correctly, we can win this thing.

2009-02-09 04:30:33 AM
Oh, BTW, I am only talking about Afghanistan. Iraq was/is a clusterfark that we never should have been involved in. The only way to win that one was not to play.

The main difference being that this Democrat "warmongers" wants to finish the war and bring our people home. He is developing an exit strategy, and wants to attack the right people.

But you go ahead and conflate the two. They are exactly the same.
