Jan Kurth, whose daughter is a student at the school, held a sign that read, "SM mom for love, not hate."

SM mom, eh? I wonder if she's a BD mom as well...

Indeed!

Although the "take off and nuke the site form orbit" option is still sooooooo appealing.

It's great to see people stand up to these idiots but the church with their insanely warped minds will believe it was all the work of satan.

Ah, the Westboro Baptist Church. Check out this interview done by WBCN in Boston. The actual phone call starts at 3:50 of part 1, the first part is them setting up the bit for their listeners.

I believe so.

But this really is a great idea these kids have. People could get their friends and neighbors to sponsor them, say at like ten cents a minute, for every minute they counter-protest those assholes. Really throw it in the WBC's face that every minute they're there protesting they are raising money for AIDS research. It would be absolutely beautiful.

That is pretty damn awesome. If people could do this everywhere they protested, something tells me they would lose steam pretty quickly

They were going to protest at the NIU memorial service last year. Being an alum, I wanted to go, but had prior engagements and couldn't make it.

Personally, I would go up to Fred Phelps with a story in hand. The story would be a very graphic work of fiction in which I "have sex in a very uncomfortable place" his adult daughters while he and his sons pleasure themselves with large sex toys. I will explain in great detail his emotions during the encounter.

My plan is to get him to take a swing at me. If he does, hey, free lawsuit! If he doesn't, well then, hey, great story to tell to other people.

If we can give one person at Westboro AIDS, they will all be dead in a couple of years. Anyone want to volunteer?

The comments for that story are scary, too.

good for them and all, but here's the real win from that story - a nice little story about a man masturbating in the toy aisle of walmart

I'm torn, on the one hand I really think there should be nothing at this mans funeral. Nothing. Paying any attention to it at all will just encourage his family to keep up with the crazy. (not that they need much). On the other I would love to see a bunch of people standing outside the cemetery, no signs no yelling (no acting like a protest in other words), but.... as the family LEAVES the cemetery, everyone claps.

This does absolutely nothing except make the protesters feel good about themselves. The Fred Phelps group is just going to ignore them, it's a pointless exercise in futility.

Why are they resorting to going to the local schools now? In case one misguided, jaded youth finally snaps at the teasing his/her peers and goes over to attack them to sue or what? I don't quite follow their logic now...

/lives near Shawnee Mission East
//And for the power of all that's unholy, quit giving them attention!

So give them a platform to spread their filth, unchecked? These kids and this school countered them peacefully, with dignity, and generated money for a charity. They're a model of how you deal with purveyors of hate - real, or poseurs like Phelps.

Where are you going to find a venue that can support 6 billion people? The port-a-potty rental costs alone would be astronomical.

The funny thing is that his tactics are helping the pro GLBT movement. His unrepentant hatred is making the GLBT community look ever better in comparison. On his side you have a hateful bigot who insults everyone he possibly can, on the other side you have people who just want the same respect and rights that heterosexuals take for granted. More and more people are taking a side and they are not taking his.

I wonder if he understands the irony of what he is doing?

Westboro is far too dense to understand that such actions would be mocking them. They'd just blame Satan. Nevertheless, it's a good idea - and a good idea is a good idea.

That's the thing. He could give a shiat about homosexuals. He's in it for the attention and the money. He preys on the ignorance of the people who really believe the nonsense he spews.

The consequences of what he's doing isn't even an afterthought.

That's really great. If that would have happened at my high school, they might have gotten a few things thrown at them and some dirty looks, but that's about it.

I think this is pretty good thinking on the part of the students. They should also ask the church members if they'd like to contribute every few minutes.
