"At the high school level, it's not appropriate. We are trying to get kids to understand who they are and what they are. It may give kids a mixed message if you can't do it on your own."

um... from what I understand of hypnotism, they're still "doing it on their own". I mean, unless someone has figured out how to hypnotize you into being a superhero, this sound like just another way of getting them to focus.

You will give 110%
That's impossible. No one can give more than 100%. By definition, that is the most anyone can give.

Were they afraid the players or coach would try to hypnotize the cheerleaders?

Hypnosis is fun. Especially when you reprogram your boyfriend to only say "squeak". Not that I'd know anything about it >.>

This would have been so much more interesting if it was the girls' basketball team.

Yes, the whole cheerleaders thing comes to mind...but last time I checked, cheerleaders didn't have minds. So hypnotism would theoretically be impossible.

How square do you have to be to think everything is addictive?

Jesus Christ.

Psh. Hypnosis is bunk. My wife hypnotized me to help me quit smoking, and now it's just a coincidence that I do the dishes every time she says "quasimodo."

Hypnosis is relaxation. Relaxation gives focus. Focus increases awareness, of thoughts and of actions. Increased awareness of thoughts and actions leads to better control, therefore better performance.

Heaven forbid that our children learn relaxation, focus, awareness, and control.

This is Kansas. I am sure that speaking in tongues on Sundays is considered normal.

I remember listening to some fundie twat in the 80's basically arguing that believing in yourself was an afront to God.

I have a web site that covers weird stuff and if I had a nickel for every time someone found me by searching "sexual hypnosis" (or my favorite, "hypnosis erotica") I'd have at least a couple bucks.

Well, they aren't "learning" it, it's being induced, and that's the problem. If you induce it, how will they learn it on their own, and they can become defendant on it being induced hypnotically, just as much as my high school buddies became dependent on it being induced canabisally.

/Yeah, they should learn it, not receive it from an external source.

Wow, this is such a non-issue. Hypnotists are no different than a coach, expect perhaps less effective.

I remember signing a contract, to play ball not to be put to sleep by some two bit carney hypnotist! I won't do that Pop! I can't.

Saw this on local news tonight and I just knew it was going to show up here. Kinnamon is an arse, has been for years. Has around 1500 people, the size of a graduating class for a 1A high school in Kansas is less than 30.
The one thing I can say in his defense (and it pains me to do so), is that at least he did the right thing and got parental permission before he brought in the hypnotist.
Of course, we should really be talking about the parents who signed the permission slips to let the hypnotist (WTF, a Church of Christ minister?) have a session with their kids because they aren't playing ball well.

**************

Back in the day when babysitting was the source of income, I'd 'hypnotize' the kids to make them go to sleep.

Simple relaxation technique, counting to ten, starting from the toes and working up the body.
They were usually OH-YOU-TEE out like a light by the time we got to 'five'...although sometimes they'd make it as far as 'seven'.
They loved it, too...actually enjoyed bedtime rather than it being a battle of wills.

yeah, I can't think of anything involving sports, ministers and altered states of consciousness that could go wrong here.

"ok, and now you're feeling hot, you're at a beach. you take off your clothes. And now you help your buddy apply sun block -YOU WILL NOT REMEMBER THIS- you decide to let someone take your picture."
