Farking Utah. I'd support Utah getting a Fark tag, if it weren't for the fact that in any sane world we'd all just ignore Utah.

25th Street in downtown Ogden was a den of prostitution and drink when that sign was originally painted. It's farking hilarious that the council equates 25th St. with family.

"But one could also witness gambling, prostitution, narcotics sales, robbery, rape, and even murder. Ogden grew and became a rough city. Crime boss Al Capone commented in the 1920s that Ogden was too wild a town for him."--- from the official page (new window)

And it still is. You have an art gallery a flower shop an antiques store a bar a smoke shop another bar another smoke shop a bar a barber a bar a bar a bar a specialty paper store a comedy club and a bar. In between the buildings you can pick up any drug you want and pick up a hooker do her right in the alley or take her a block away to one of the many hourly rate motels in the area.
Fun place to have a saturday night. But family oriented? Hardly.

Thats kinda funny... Ogden has always been known as the liver of Utah. 25th street has about 5 bars on it, and it used to be know for its red light district back in the day.

/Work's on 25th Street
//Wishes they still had a red light district

The mayor responded Friday by saying that any feud is in the mind of Edwards.

"I feel sorry for Bruce," Godfrey said. "I think he has personal issues."

TFA: The decision ignited a feud between Edwards and City Hall -- most notably with Mayor Matthew Godfrey -- at least in Edwards' telling of it.

The mayor responded Friday by saying that any feud is in the mind of Edwards.

"I feel sorry for Bruce," Godfrey said. "I think he has personal issues."

From what I understand, this represents pretty much Godfrey's standard attitude toward anyone who is not a venture capitalist or large business owner.

Zoning officers like to think of their towns as little fiefdoms they get to run however they like.

And a restoration is a cut & dried issue. Even changing the wording on a sign is protected.

/should have called the USSC, not the ACLU
//he'd have had his sign repainted in weeks, not years.

2009-02-01 11:28:18 PM
Looks like the sign was originally painted early enough for it to be historic restoration. I personally love looking at the old ads that used to be painted on buildings-it's interesting to see what some of the slogans used to be as well as some of the prices.

I think the parents are just terrified that the kids may remark on the slogan & that they'll have to have something that resembles a parenting discussion with their children. Heaven forbid they have to actually TALK to their children.

Other link in the article: Ogden's historic C.C. Keller Building
The turn-of-the-century brick structure at the corner of 25th Street and Lincoln Avenue housed the infamous El Borrocho saloon from the late 1930s to the mid-1970s. The bar was known for its tough characters and frequent murders.

Also, until the mid-1950s, the building was home to the brothel known as "The Rose Rooms," named for proprietor Rose Davies. A sign outside the building advertised "Furnished Rooms" as code for the enterprise.

Kinda like Seattle's "seamstresses" of old. And you people are getting in a snit over a farking beer sign? God knows Utah would not want to be remembered for evil, evil things......upon women.....

To this day, Edwards has signs in his windows, including one with a big likeness of the mayor with a Pinocchio nose and the words, "Indict Gondola Godfrey" -- a backhanded reference to the mayor's support on a gondola transit system.

Not the ACLU. They're hated in Utah. They often do stupid things, like file lawsuits against the LDS church for denying protesters on LDS church's private property.

Hey, there's a really nice Italian restaurant there. Mmmmm...La Ferrovia.

Actually, 25th street is MUCH better than it used to be. Better stores, street lighting, parking, cleaner nearby streets like Wall, the Union Station, and the Junction not too far away. It's trying to have a small Park City main street feel, and so far, it's doing pretty good.

I have always felt Utah was wasted on its inhabitants. It's so naturaly beautiful, yet culturally backwards and bland.

I agree with you Hiro. As a right-wing "fascist" myself I hate the term "family oriented." There are no families anymore, just people who happen to have children (checked off their list) but primarily strive to afford bigger cars and houses, with their little possessions in daycare, being raised by marginal GED recipients with no sense or understanding of manners and courtesy.

"Family oriented." What a farking joke! Do any of you farkers remember when we used to have supper every evening with our family? I've since learned this is a lost treasure of my youth.

Aside from the fact that they are the single most-heavily armed state in the nation and their civilian munitions laws (now defunct since the SC ruling in 2008) blatantly state that anything not requiring it's own source of locomotion is permitted.

That and they're entire infrastructure is ran by a religion that scares me more than Islam in it's fanaticism, and was founded by a known schizophrenic pedophile.

They may have a bit of fanaticism to them, but they nothing in their beliefs that really gives the okay to killing unbelievers, let alone anything that actually advocates doing so actively. Islam is WAY scarier.
