There are a few bankers who should be wearing the same outfit on their first day in prison.

Because as we all know, a girl who doesn't walk around in Achilles tendon-destroying shoes and uncomfortable leg-wear and an inch of powder on her face is just a farking slob. Also probably a dyke.

Most places have dress codes not because without the clothes people look like slobs, but because slobs then take too much leeway with it.

And end up looking like slobs.

I never understood why women who typically make less money are expected to spend a fortune on clothing, shoes, and makeup just to go to work.

Of course those places could just be like most other places that won't or can't demand heels/skirt/makeup dress-code and just demand that their employees look professional and clean. Buuuut that'd be too hard I spose.

If a woman can prove that any of chemicals they are forcing her to slather all over her face are getting into her body the lawsuit could be huge. Any reliable study showing woman who use makeup get sick in any increased numbers will be monsterous for suit happy lawyers. Even the heels are inviting tons of disability claims for sprained ankles.

No-no's include ankle chains - professional, but not the one you want to be associated with

The article was worth it for that line.

Dress codes for businesswomen have been around as long as there have been significant numbers of businesswomen. Used to be, they didn't have to remind you.

Skirts looks bad when you don't have heels on. You look stumpy. However, forcing someone to wear makeup is way beyond the pale. What kind of makeup? Is a little lipstick and mascara enough? Do you need to have eyeliner? Is foundation required?

Once you start getting THAT level of detail, you're opening youeself up to massive amounts of trouble.

eddyatwork: I never understood why women who typically make less money are expected to spend a fortune on clothing, shoes, and makeup just to go to work.

Great point, eddy. It's extremely time-consuming, too. I still spend a fortune on shoes, but they're generally of the comfortable, easy to slip off variety.

Find whoever had the time to write this little missive despite the real problems you're facing and make them redundant.

FTFA: Look professional, not fashionable; be careful with perfume; always wear a heel of some sort - maximum 2 inches; always wear some sort of makeup - even if it's just lipstick." Shoes and skirt must be the same color. No-no's include ankle chains - "professional, but not the one you want to be associated with;" white high heels; overstuffed handbags; an overload of rings, and double-pierced ears.

Sounds like some self-important VP meant well but got carried away (banning overstuffed handbags, loads of rings, and double-pierced ears is sensible). If all of the above were recommendations instead of requirements, it would just be silly instead of ridiculous. Who the hell matches their shoes to their skirt/slacks? I don't have grey or navy blue shoes. And requiring a heel? Even if it's a kitten heel, they'd still get uncomfortable after standing around all day.

I worked in a company that hired a British VP of sales. We were inside sales reps, never EVER met with our clients. Still, within a week, this knob required a business professional dress code. Everyone had to wear suit jackets just to answer the phone. Luckily, he didn't last long. He was as ineffectual as he was clueless.

mmagdalene: Great point, eddy. It's extremely time-consuming, too.

Indeed. I can wake up, get showered, and be out the door in ten minutes including toothbrushing, hairdoing, and dressing. Women simply cannot do this because of all the extra crap they are expected to do because they have to "be pretty" which is nonsense because most men don't even notice anyway.

I think people in general look like slobs these days. And I am one of them.

However, I like the feel of putting on a freshly starched shirt, shined shoes, creased pants. And seeing me freshly shaved in the mirror. Puts a pep in my step.

Honestly if you think you look good you feel good.

The women in my office are such slobs they actually look better on casual friday.

eddyatwork: I never understood why women who typically make less money are expected to spend a fortune on clothing, shoes, and makeup just to go to work.

There's no reason to spend a fortune on clothing. If you're on a budget and have to dress professionally, you just end up buying a lot of mix-and-match stuff. Also, thrift stores are worth their weight in gold.

I could easily buy a brand-new jacket at Neiman Marcus, but why bother when I can pay 1/10 the price at a consignment shop?

/Red Bank consignment shop last weekend: Bought a Ralph Lauren sweater, 2 pairs of Lucky jeans, and a London Fog trench coat, all for under $200.

What men do not notice? The men looking at the other men?

As a man we do notice. All the men in my office notice who has it together and who does not.

We know who has the funky feet, who slept in her clothes, the broad who always wears flip flops with the monkey hair on her toes.

The overstuffed handbags gets me. How many of the female employees are walking around with their handbags all shift long? I hate the women who walk in public with these huge bags, slamming them into people. But once they are at work don't they just store them out of the way? I think Sir Al Bundy wrote this memo for the BoE.

They're trying to echo "tradition" at the subliminal level, so asto reinforce the cultural idea of Banks as a $tore of Value.

However, people are sensibly worried, since those in charge of the Banks have been providing Medium of €xchange not backed by suitable Mea$ure of Account... both for "promises to pay or forfeit property of value" AND for "services rendered to operate the Bank".

Or in lay terms, people are scared about banks' solidity because they're still run by the overpaid jackasses who were pushing dumb loans out in the first place. The corporate response (rather than having a roast pork barbecue for the public) is to put lipstick on those who front for the fat pigs in back.

Which makes this even dumber than putting lipstick on a pig.

I sit next to a 4'11 broad. I say broad because she is 300lbs.

The only clothes she can find are pants with elastic waists and scrub tops, at least that is what she wears to work.

Her ankles are so fat they cannot fit into her shoes, so she goes shoeless as soons as she hits the door. Even to the bathroom.

And she gives me shiat because I only shave every couple of days. Though my clothes come from the cleaners.

Here is what I have heard last week.

1. My husband likes to roll over at night while i am sleeping and fark me while I have my cpap machine on.
2. I love waxing my hoo ha, makes it look so pretty and pink. She has a gunt.

So I am all for dress codes and weight limits.

Without being too picky, the Bank of England is our equivalent of the Federal Reserve - it doesn't make loans to the public at all.

Most women need make-up. You can learn that from any of those "Stars Without Make-up" articles we like to mock here. Cameron Diaz is beastly without her goo. Don't want to wear skirts, heels and make-up? Work somewhere else.

2009-02-01 01:05:29 PM
We're talking about a bank, here. Banks must project an image of prosperity to their customers, and giving your deposit to a person dressed like they stopped off at work on their way to the beach undermines that impression. Unfortunate, but if you aren't into looking at all well-to-do, you shouldn't work at a financial institution.

eddyatwork: I never understood why women who typically make less money are expected to spend a fortune on clothing, shoes, and makeup just to go to work.

Yeah, and why are guys in some high profile jobs, dealing with clients expected to have well polished, expensive shoes, tailored suits and quality ties?

My wife will say the same thing, then I point out that guys shoes cost 2x's any of hers, most quality ties cost $75+, and a quality tailored sport jacket costs an easy $400+. The best suit I wear when meeting with our top clients costs $3,000. Sure you can get cheaper stuff at the men's wearhouse, but it's exactly that, cheaper. Not to say that there isn't really expensive, designer woman's clothes, but it isn't all blue jeans and rainbows for white collar guys.

I glanced at the headline and initially read "female employees" as "all employees." Accidental dyslexia is so much more interesting than reality.
