Hawkes hopes to pilot the craft to the very bottom of the sea -- 36,000 feet into the depths of the Mariana Trench. Such a feat is generally considered the ocean-going equivalent of landing on the moon.
While some might question the need to see what's down there,

What, hasn't anyone seen the movie Abyss?

As Homer Simpson might say: "mmmmm...pancake!!!"

2003-01-25 06:57:38 AM
cheap... at more than a million dollars.

2003-01-25 07:00:48 AM
Hasn't this already been done three or four times?

2003-01-25 07:01:40 AM
We're talking relative cheapness, Flyin1.

2003-01-25 07:05:32 AM

"Lewis and Clark's trek through the Northwest Passage"???

They didn't trek through the Northwest Passage! The Northwest Passage is North of CANADA! Is the author of this article retarded?

I smell a ps-contest subject here

Jacques Cousteau surrenders.

Jacques Cousteau is dead right?

There is only one "flying sub" and Admiral Nelson owns it.

2003-01-25 08:38:16 AM
this is my sub of choice.

2003-01-25 08:38:26 AM
We all live in a yellow submarine ......

Deep Flight Aviator, also called Spirit of Patrick in honor of an investor who recently died

Awwww, Spongebob will be so upset.

Yeah, Lewis and Clark were sent out to explore the louisiana purchace, or so i thought. I thought the northwest passage was what capt cook was looking for so ships could avoid going around cape horn. Oh well, the things you learn from californians.

I invented a device that removes all the raisins from your raisin bran. Its gonna be huge....

""Isn't that something," one woman marvelled to another, who agreed that it was as flashbulbs erupted all around them."

Although the sub is pretty cool, I thought this was classic, in-depth reporting with a human feel.

Also, I know the reporter is just trying to give a sense of the scene, but I sincerely doubt that even one "flashbulb" was on hand, since they're used almost exclusively for high-speed photography in the modern era.

Does this remind anyone else of something out of Johnny Quest?

2003-01-25 10:33:45 AM
yeah, but can it crush cars or carry ten people? I'll take the redneck limo thingy.

2003-01-25 10:38:50 AM
"When we get up alongside sperm whales or giant squid it will get really exciting," he said.

Obviously, this sub is going to be making a very distinct fapping noise as it explores the depths.

2003-01-25 11:30:39 AM
he wants to bring it down to 36000 feet but on the site it says the max depth is 1500 feet.
the man's insane!

2003-01-25 12:22:34 PM
Pummer this is my sub of choice.

Capt. Nemo would be proud.

2003-01-25 12:49:01 PM
That sub is damn cool. Now I have visions of underwater fighting subs outrunning old crappy torpedos and delivering their warheads right into the screws of an enemy ship.

2003-01-25 01:04:12 PM
umm, isnt there a good reason why subs go so slow?

perhaps because you *cant see* more than, say, 3ft in front of you.

i guess they'll be relying pretty heavily on sonar

chewd:

It's about the density of water.

Whatever happened to SeaQuest (I mean after I got bored and stopped watching)?

2003-01-25 02:59:42 PM
Blue Sub #6 - now all we need to do is melt the polar ice caps.

2003-01-25 05:18:33 PM
...and avoid those creepy Mutio girls.

Blue 6 r0x0red.

To hell with this guy...

It's all about Captain Nemo, baby. Captain mutherfuggin' Nemo.

2003-01-26 07:57:35 PM
But captain nemo from 20000 leagues, or the anime nemo whose nautilus had to fight off scary neo atlanteans with lasers? Because the second one may not have been as well scripted, but certainly looked harder than death. And had pretty girls on the staff roll.

Ahem.

Anyway, it's time for a sing song

Stingraaaay, Stingray! (bada baada baada)
Stingraaaay, Stingray!

Looks to me as if someone's been getting moe than a little inspiration from a certain 60s kids puppet adventure series ;)

2003-01-27 08:58:38 PM
Not that anyone is reading this anymore, but I wouldn't consider 11.5 knots "flying" more like moving with the aid of a walker.
