You just saved a bunch of money on your car insurance by switching to GEICO?

It always amazes me that people leave this kind of stuff unanttended in their cars.

Our local paper runs a notice with the obituaries every day warning people to not leave houses unattended while going to funerals.

I just have visions of Snake from the Simpsons: "Could this town be any stupider?"

Police said fifteen minutes after the robberies, the thieves went to an East Point bank and took another $500 from Turner's account.

"(She) went in and filled out a withdrawal slip and actually had nerve to pass herself off as myself," said Turner.

Her bank sucks. At mine the teller swipes your card and you have to type in your PIN to do anything.

eddie van heinous: Who leaves $726 in tuition money in a car??

What amazes me is how quick we are to blame the victims here. Too many people have reached the point where crime is accepted. Not just from thieves who break into cars and houses, but from politicians and Wall Street bankers. Is there not an honest man left in America?

Not blaming the victims, I wished we lived in a world where you didn't have to worry about leaving things in your car.

I wasn't blaming the victim. Just saying, leaving that much cash in an unattended car isn't too bright.

Because yes, there are tons of car-breaking-into assholes out there.

I doubt anyone blames the victims for the incident. However, it's a rough world out there. People who do stupid things will generally regret it. Leaving cash and a SS card in a car is really, really farking stupid.

Stuff like this has been happening for years. Thieves would read the obituaries, find out when funerals were happening, then they would hit the homes of the deceased, knowing they would be empty during the funeral.

Move to a rural area like the one I grew up in. I know several people who leave their keys in their cars when parked at their houses/work. I only know one car theft story from the area. When I was a kid it was big news when a guy's car went missing from a local store's parking lot. They found it two days later, in the creek down the hill from the store. It was apparently in neutral.

I think you are mixing up honesty with vigilance. There will always be some scumbag trying to take what we earned with our blood and sweat. It is up to us and us alone to be vigilant against predators looking for an easy score. To that end, we must take responsibility when we falter and do something retarded like leave an ipod protected by nothing more than a 4-wheeled gift box in an empty parking lot.

Don't get me wrong, the blame still rests on the criminal for their actions, but what has left America is not honesty. What has left America is the personal dedication and vigilance necessary for keeping our lives secure, instead of passing the blame or waiting for others to do it for us.

I'm surprised that people are surprised. Do they think thieves work on some sort of ethics system?

You'd be amazed at what people where I work report as stolen from their vehicles. In addition to the normal stereos, ipods, phones and cash, they report missing birth certificates, financial documents, computers, traveler's checks, credit cards, jewelry and other assorted valuables.

Either these people are very, very dumb and leave too many valuables in their (usually unlocked) vehicles, or they are scamming for the insurance.

It's a car, not a safe.

Ummm, I think the bank pulled a fast one on her too. It accepted the signature of the thief. They have to give her the $500 back. BUT you have to know to insist that they do this. Banks won't always give you this information.

I live in a pretty well populated area now where lots of people walk by a car parked on the street. I occasionally borrow a friend's car and I'm amazed at how many times I've found myself covering up the mail they leave on the seats. Often with big bank and credit card logos on them.

Yeah, last year over here in detroit I made the mistake of leaving an ipod visible. Now any idiot would know that it was a very old piece of crap ipod mini that wasn't worth crap...

However not every crackhead with a brick would know that...

As an interesting aside, firefox spellchecker knows the word "crackhead," but not "ipod." It also knows "Firefox," but not "firefox."
