Say what you will, but the fact that she's NOT talking to the media shows some intelligence.

But the doc who gave her fertility drugs should be strung up.

Yea, she's a role model for asking for fertility drugs after already having 6 kids and abandoning a house and filing for bankruptcy Link (new window)

I love how they are trying their best to make this into a 'crisis' story.

Godspeed, useless talking heads.

from link: Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman says the mother is in her mid-thirties and lives with her parents.

There's been no mention of the octuplets' father, Kauffman observes.

The grandfather, she adds, is apparently going to head back to his native Iraq to earn money for the growing family.

...wow....just...wow.

Why the hell was she approved for fertility treatments in the first place?!?

FTFA: her daughter already had six young children and never expected the fertility treatment she had received would result in eight more babies.
A huge team was needed to deliver the babies successfully
She said that doctors had given her daughter the option of reducing the number of embryos, but she had declined.

So, she didn't know she was expecting eight, but when she was offered the option of reducing the number of embryos, she refused?

It's not the doctor's fault. Once they're firmly in her body, the cells are the property of the woman. No one can force her to do anything with them.

But we can be forced to pay for the safe delivery of an unnatural number of babies. See how that works?

2009-01-30 11:54:50 AM
8 embryo's should NEVER have implanted.. if that is true...that is the doctor's fault. Plus, isn't embryo implant treatments really expensive in the first place?

Maybe all her other kids were too ugly, she was just hoping for at least one cute baby.

I'd be very surprised if it was IVF; the doctor wouldn't have put in eight eggs.

The mother probably took Clomifene to guarantee egg release (as part of IVF or IUI treatment) - but the effect can be unpredictable. The doctor is aiming for one or two eggs (for IUI), but the ovaries can decide otherwise. It could then have been a natural conception.

For IUI, the mother should have had her overies ultrasound scanned in the days before egg release, to make sure that too many eggs aren't going to be produced. So somebody farked up, but it could have been the mother going against a 'no sex this week, please' call from the doctor.

She had fertility treatments with SIX KIDS!

Some people are just GREEDY!

2009-01-30 12:30:08 PM
This is nothing short of malpractice. Any woman who has successfully birthed multiple children -- let alone 6!! -- should not be on fertility treatment. These children, should they have any medical limitations, have every right to hold their parents and doctors responsible for a near-criminal level of neglectful judgement. Disgusting.

The sad part is that since they were so premature at birth, they will probably have learning disabilities or cerebal palsay later. The brain developes last.

And they will be given a new van and a house and 8 car seats and 8 cribs and 8 whatever and then the companies can get free publicity and then ty pennington will tear down that house and make a new one and meanwhile she gets welfare for 14 kids and lives high off the hog and gets back tons of money at tax time . Oh wait she will never work

kavoelker: 8 embryo's should NEVER have implanted.. if that is true...that is the doctor's fault. Plus, isn't embryo implant treatments really expensive in the first place?

1. Read cryinoutloud's post. It's not the doctor's fault. It's common practice to attempt to fertilize a large number of eggs, because there's no guarantee any one of them will take. Once fertilized, they are the woman's property, so if SHE were responsible she would have and easily could have chosen to have less than 8 kids. It's her fault.

2. However, IMO, there is no need for anyone with 6 kids to get fertility treatment. 6 is enough. You don't need more.

2009-01-30 12:32:58 PM
Why would someone do that to herself? That many kids = no live EVAR!!

I have two myself, but that's enough. I'm enjoying my family, I can handle what I have, I'm no longer able to have children, and we made sure we could be financially responsible for them. How on earth anyone can justify having 14 kids, especially when most salaries these days would not be able to support them is beyond me. That and the woman must want to die early from exhaustion.

Maybe she's hoping that TLC will give her a show, too, and pay for the family to vacation and renew their vows in Hawaii. I mean, if Jon and Kate (new window) can do it with just eight kids total, this family's gotta be a shoo-in with eight newborns AND six other children.

Seriously, though, this family needs to step back and evaluate what "personal responsibility" means. They already couldn't manage to at least break even with six kids, so of course the logical thing to do would be to add seven (+1 surprise) to the mix.

With each passing day, the feeling that Idiocracy isn't a satire but rather a foreshadow of our future grows.

I see where you are going there, but the first statement is from the "Grandmother" and the other is by a hospital spokesman. Which is means the hospital is unwilling to make a statement about whether she had fertility treatments, probably because they don't want to take a chance on violating HIPPA. The "Grandmother" is free to say whatever she wants to the media.

Subby does realize that the eight babies were delivered by ceasearian section, right? That means the vag would not have needed to be stretched.

/Just sayin'
