Abbbaa, aba,baa, abba. $45BILLION
PROFIT
Shrub's buddies have done a swell job.
This is only Exxon. Out on a limb here, but I predict that the other Seven Sisters will do equally well.
And Wall Street is bonusing itself 64B.

Tell me again how our world's economy is tanking because we gave a few people houses to live in here in USA.
Then tell me again.
Better do it again, I love the financial bullsheit.
There is no economic theory/model/concept that covers redistribution of wealth to this degree.
Farkers have stolen ALL of the money.
Every last bit.
Shove your economic theories.

It's just one economic theory: Chicago economics. Keynes would shiat his pants if he saw what was going on currently, and the Austrians are just bean-counters.

To put it in some perspective, Exxon Mobile could have given every person in the U.S. a nice crisp $100 bill on Dec 31st 2008....

And still had a profit of over $14 billion.

Did Exxon not get the memo? You're supposed to LOSE billions, then get bailed out by the taxpayer.

How DARE they provide a stock with real value, for people to put in their 401Ks?

Yeah, I'm not quite getting this. If a company loses money, they either have a bad business model or they deserve to sink. If they turn a profit and provide value to their shareholders and employees, they're greedy and stealing from the American people.

Are they just supposed to break exactly even or something?

Their profit is so high because they are charging, without oversight, too much for an essential commodity. It is silent, faceless extortion at it's worst, dressed up as good business sense.

Their profits come rolling in through massive environmental and human cost. It isn't just oil being sold to refineries, its all the associated mess of oil spills, deals with shady, shady countries to get their oil or pipeline routes, funding "think tanks" that publish "official papers" similar to smoking companies and lung canter, and a whole laundry list of other evils.

But hey, if you own some stock you can at least collect some dividends on the planet as a whole getting farked over.

Republicans really don't understand economics very well, despite their claims to be experts on economics. They have no idea of how badly an economy is farked when cartels, monopolies, and oligarchies form.

Profit good, tax bad, supply and demand, economics 101 - sum total of our understanding.

I'm sure the gas buying public wouldn't have spent some of that money elsewhere and maybe saved a few jobs in other areas of the economy.

But they'll keep claiming to be the experts on the economy, and everything else.

wmoonfox: But it's those greedy ragheads in the Middle East pushing oil prices higher who were responsible for the insane gas prices.

No the gas prices were the result of rampant speculation fueled by easy credit. Once the market took a shiat, and the credit dried up, the speculators weren't able to keep pushing the gas prices and oil prices up.

The oil companies actually lost money in the past couple of months. Now, they're collectively hoarding oil and reducing refinery output in an effort to push the gas prices back up.

Don't confuse profit with profit margin. They are a HUGE company so any profit made would be large. However as a percentage of overall activity it may be low.

Your local transmission shop may have a higher profit margin, they're just not changing like 90,000,000 transmissions each year.

Two fold: 1. I'm a stubborn independent asshole that hates receiving gifts of any kind, birthday, christmas, random, i refuse them. Yes I refuse christmas gifts.

2. I don't like ExxonMobil's company policies and they way they handle themselves. There's nothing I can do about my dad working there but he has sipped from the kool-aid and refuses to see anything wrong with the way the company works. He was also part of the 28% that think Bush did a good job so I've got that to deal with.

Did I accept money for school tuition so that I could get a good job? Yes. Do I still talk to my parents and visit during the holidays? Yes. But I don't want to have anything more to do with that company than I already do.
