Saw him live at Sir-Lafs-A-Lot in Memphis.

From what I've seen of Hick's stand up, he's to honest and correct to be funny.

Instead of laughing, I'd go through whole bits just nodding and going, "he's right.. what can you say? he's right."

2009-01-28 08:03:42 PM
Never saw him live, but I did smoke a dube while sitting on his grave (in Leakesville, MS, behind the Freeman Family funeral home).

Lost doesn't have the same meaning that it used to does it?

2009-01-28 08:09:58 PM
It's similar in meaning to "never before seen footage." What, no one has checked to see if it is even broadcast-worthy?

2009-01-28 08:11:09 PM
He was a paranoid, bitter, faux-anarchist nut. But damned if he wasn't funny as well. People should probably get off Denis Leary for "stealing" his material, though.

Saw Sane Man the other week. Outside of the awful editing and even despite the dated references, it was still relevant humor.

Hicks speaking on that topic: "I have a scoop for you. I stole his (Leary's) act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did".

Hicks wasn't funny. If I wanted to listen to some guy biatch incessantly about stupid people & such, I'd go visit my parents.

Hicks was brilliant. Truly. And this deserves the "Hero" tag. I give the Alphabet Man a lot of credit.

This was bill hicks: "I hate you. I hate you. I hate you. (Insert 15 minutes of persistent swearing). I hate you. I hate you. Good night everybody!"

Everytime I'd find him even the tiniest bit funny...

Guess what? Nothing but profanity. He's like Bob Saget and just as unfunny.

Kind of disappointing though that they are going to air the censored version of the routine. I want the uncensored :)

Saw him at the Punch Line in Walnut Creek CA around 1993, Everyone but me & my friend walk out demanding a refund we were on the floor laughing our asses off & got to stay for the second show & got a few free drinks.

I have a recording of him talking about getting cut from Dave's show. It is pretty awesome.

I never understood why people said he didnt tell jokes, he has a bit called Randy Pan the Goat Boy for Christ sake.

"Hicks stabbed him"

"arizona bay" is still the funniest freakin' album I've ever heard. The piece about Barbra Bush urinating on Rush Limbaugh... Comedy frickin' gold.

2009-01-28 09:14:13 PM
The funniest thing he ever did was posthumously lose the Award for Favorite Male Comedian to Carrot Top. That was perhaps the best piece of performance art ever.

Unlike many people, I do not think comedy is for 'escaping from the daily grind of reality to kick back and not think for awhile. To just laugh at some... jokeblower like Carrot Top. To me, Carrot Top is the comedy equivalent of a streaker. Remember streakers? "Hey, there's a nude guy running by!... wow... OK, anyway, what were we talking about?"

That was Bill Hicks saying that before he died. Forgot that first quotation mark.

I don't get people who don't find Hicks funny. I guess some people just don't get depressing comedy. Never listen to Henry Rollins or the good bits of Christopher Titus' act.

I'm also a fan of both. The parts of Hicks I like are not the bits Leary copied, and the parts of Leary I like aren't the parts he stole from Hicks. Although I do prefer Hicks' left wing chain smoking misanthrope to Leary's right wing chain smoking misanthrope.

Plus, at least Leary can make the stolen material still funny. He's not like Carlos Mencia who steals it and ruins it.

No no no. George Bush, Dan Quayle, and I think someone else urinate on Rush Limbaugh. Barbara shiats in Rush's mouth. Then Rush ejaculates a demon maggot that joins a pro life group.

Whatever though. Like I said I cant understand why that is a turn off.

Nah, Lewis Black is more in the vein of Angry Man comedian. Hicks had his anger, but he also had his psychadelic imagery (sometimes nightmarish) and a sort of world weary attitude more reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson than any stand up comedian.

Who were the hated comedians before we were blessed with those three.

Carrot Top, Polly Shore, and Gallagher?
