The article:
Baby born in Denver library after mother leaves city bus in labour
Published: Tuesday, January 27, 2009 | 9:37 PM ET
Canadian Press NewsItem/NewsComponent/NewsLines/ByLine

DENVER - There wasn't time to look up any books on obstetrics before a woman gave birth in the Denver Public Library.

Library spokeswoman Celeste Jackson says the woman walked into the library, said she had been riding a city bus and was in labour.

She gave birth just inside the library entrance.

Staffers and security guards helped until paramedics arrived and took the mother and newborn girl to Denver Health Medical Centre.

Jackson said staffers didn't yet know their names but they want to send flowers. She says it's never happened before.

Funny headline, though...

LOL

"Y'know that little stamp, the one that says "New York Public Library"? Well that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before:

Flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. What's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and the Five Chinese Brothers? Doesn't HE deserve better?

Look. If you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped! Or: maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld; maybe that's how ya get your kicks. You and your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time is over. Ya got seven days, Seinfeld. That is one week!"

I'm 10 blocks away and didn't hear about this. Maybe 'labour' is different from 'labor'.

Best headline since the year began.
+1 subby.

Are you sure she wasn't trying to use the safe haven law and just didn't understand how it works? Have baby first, then abandon at public service building.

My husband is a librarian. He'd probably vomit if someone had a baby in front of him (we'll test this in 5 months).

2009-01-28 09:55:05 AM
Did subby RTFA? She gave birth to a girl.

2009-01-28 10:20:48 AM
The story doesn't specify which branch the baby was born in! Park Hill? Eugene Field? Good lord, Hadley branch???

Probably the Central branch, since it doesn't specify.

/Works in a library
//In Fort Collins
///Wasn't invited to the ALA conference with my coworkers
////Made the best of it though
//Went to Denver over the weekend, snuck into the hotels, and gorged on the catered food in the conference rooms

It would seem she missed her periodical.

I'm guessing she had it in the children's section. For sure she didn't have it in the reference section, as they would have been able to look up the difference between a baby boy and baby girl.

2009-01-28 10:57:40 AM
OK fine, so it was a girl. Serves me right for submitting links that late at night. On the plus side, it was my first greenlight ever.

I almost had a baby in a New-Agey gift shop.

/it was one of the few places open on Easter Sunday
//walked through hours of labor
///made young salesgirl very nervous
////even told her (teasing) "This is what happens if you don't use a condom!"

2009-01-28 11:22:35 AM
She must have been given a lot of sedatives in order to keep her from screaming in such a place

2009-01-28 12:16:21 PM
Mandapants that's evil! I love it.

We would walk the mall trying to go into labor when I was past due and trying to get something started. I loved messing with peoples minds, stop and gasp a little. Didn't have to wait in line for anything. I never thought to include anyone in conversations.
