I've toyed with the idea of buying some side walk space in key locations such as along wall street and on capital hill and just setting up a functioning guillotine.

Of course there would be dozens of warning signs that it is real and dangerous and not a toy and only "bad people" should go inside.

I'd just leave it there. A suggestion if you will. Maybe it'll get put to use in a riot.

Sucks for them, but why would anyone want to spoil their kids to that extent? My parents always said no matter how much $ they had, they'd never give me anything major (like a car). A loan for a car, is a different story.

If your kids need some help, help them. Don't give them handouts though.

I admire Madoff, I really do. It takes a special kind of person to pull of a fraud that big; to keep the lie going for so long. It reminds me of the old saying that saints are just devils who have gone in the opposite direction. Truly, he is a better man than me. More planful, more patient, more energetic. My idea of ripping someone off is sleeping an extra couple of hours. Forget about brains, I simply don't have the energy; I don't care enough to steal 50 billion dollars.

The_EliteOne: So how exaclty does having a trust fund work if you are a teenager? Do you get a special debit card or something?

It is kept "in trust". A trust fund. The kid doesn't get access until some time in the future. Hence the name "trust fund"

It was probably put there for him by his grandparents, or deceased parent's will or in a divorce, to pay for college or other such thing.

The_EliteOne: So how exaclty does having a trust fund work if you are a teenager? Do you get a special debit card or something?

Most of the time, the funds are either there on an as needed basis or waiting until you are 18, 21, 25.

No matter how you fark up, there is $500k or $2.5m in the bank "after" you get done screwing up your life. Then, after you graduate, you buy a share into a company, setting yourself up as a partner and learn to do life as an adult.

Then the kid sees the trust fund getting smaller, gets smart and works hard and replaces the money.

/takes money to make money
//doesn't have a trust fund to fall back on

With all the pissed off anarchists and such that you see at WTO protests and the like... I'm kind of surprised someone hasn't done something to this guy to make an example.

I guess that just goes to show you how poorly organized those movements are; or how well infiltrated/monitored. (I'm sure that as I write this, the Party Van people are preparing to add this to my secret dossier.)

As soon as the prosecutors figure out where the existing* money went, I hope his South American investors will have him killed...it was money they were hiding from their own governments, so they have no legal recourse.

*: "existing" means the initial capital, since the $50B number includes the imaginary interest, after the usurious fees.

$100 x 10% = 110 / 110 x 10% = $121 / etc, is still only $100

Ha, I was left a large inheritance in the many millions by my recently departed father, (had NO IDEA it existed) and was close to my father, but I declined every penny, and instead put it all in a trust for my 3 yr old. (and any subsequent kids) I've made it this far without it, and am comfortable. The way I see it, that money would change my way of life, and I like my way of life a lot right now.

A lot of them did so because the financiers they hired to manage/invest their money got suckered into believing Madoff was on to something good.

This guy committed suicide after losing more than $1 billion of his clients' money to Madoff's scheme, and he certainly wasn't the only one to tie up money that wasn't his own. Numerous charities, organizations, and little old retirees have suddenly found themselves completely wiped out because they trusted a professional who in turn, trusted somebody who turned out to be a complete douche.

Seriously, this guy deserves to be thrown in a cell with a 6'4" 370 lb serial rapist (and only one bed) for the rest of his natural life. No way should this bastard ever be allowed to touch any of the money you know he has squirrelled away somewhere in the Cayman Islands.

I'm a fair man though, so for every hidden off-shore account he turns over to the authorities, the warden will supply him with one trial-size tube of astroglide.

Squirreled away nothing. His neighbors have said that UPS and FedEx trucks make regular stops at his house and are carting off tons of boxes.
He claims he was sending out tons of holiday gifts, but the assumption is that every painting, status, and piece of jewelry that he owns has gone to his children or properties out of country.

My guess, based on the massive amounts of stolen money that he funneled to Israeli charities over the years, is that he will be moving there soon. They will do absolutely zero to send him back or take his assets, great ally of ours though they may be....

you got that right. along the lines that a middle class/poor person is 'weird' when a wealth person is 'eccentric'. along those same lines.
its only bad in america if you steal and get caught. if you don't get caught, then you're clever and successful.

As a job? I mean, did you have to apply and get interviewed, and was it hourly, salary or commission?

I too would like to know how to get into this "life of crime". It would be nice to have that kind of job security. I would also have no clue on how to launder money. Is it required? I did break into my car with a ball point pen once.

Arson is not a crime to be encouraged or condoned for any reason.

For example, I would never condone pouring gasoline through the mail slot, or into the dryer vent.

The real trick is to just pay your damn taxes. Create a business that uses cash (Buy and "operate" a taxi, for example), and go ahead and claim $150,000 a year and pay tax on it. As long as the government gets their cut, they really don't care where it came from. Pay your mortgage and car payment with that... anything else in the world you want, food, pool tables, plasma TV's, some super blinging rims, etc you just pay cash for. As long as the item is under $10,000, the IRS doesn't need to be notified.

/In my experience, 99.9% of criminals have very poor accounting skills

The_EliteOne: So how exaclty does having a trust fund work if you are a teenager? Do you get a special debit card or something?

dbaggins: It is kept "in trust". A trust fund. The kid doesn't get access until some time in the future. Hence the name "trust fund"

Holy crap. Thanks for the snotty wrong answer, Mr. Expert!

Look up dynasty trusts. 3503(c) trusts. estate trusts. Even charitable remainder trusts can designate kids as income recipients. There's all kinds of trusts that pay kids a Porsche-sized allowance.

worlddan: I admire Madoff, I really do.

I'd just leave it there. A suggestion if you will. Maybe it'll get put to use in a riot.

Nah, put it on a trailer so you can go back and forth between Wall St. and Washington D.C. Put a nice sign on there that says something like "Maybe the French were right about something"

Came here to verify that I wasn't the only one who got the reference here:

Just last month, someone swiped a $10,000 piece of bronze yard art from the property only to return it with a note: "Bernie the Swindler, Lesson: Return Stolen Property to rightful owners. Signed by - The Educators," the note read.

Please tell me that it is so obvious, we aren't discussing it.

I could have used a Goodbye, Lenin reference in the East Germany thread!!!

dreadprophet: orclover: Buddy of mine lost a major portion of his net worth to this guy. Alot of people did. To think that Madoff only has to worry about getting up to 5 years in prison, i'm in the wrong biz.

Yeah, and 5 lifetimes worth of paranoia. If the guy doesn't get whacked he'll probably end up a being a total nutter.

I think the max penalty for corporate fraud is 10 years now, after the whole Enron / WorldCom / Adelphia stuff went down back in 01-02.

Here's what I hope will happen: Madoff goes to prison for 5 or 10 years. He makes some friends in prison, and talks them into investing some money with him when he gets out. The next time the market gets a little f'ed up, they'll ask for their money back, and it turns out Bernie doesn't have any. Then he'll find out that Don Vincenzo doesn't play by the same rules as the SEC. Everybody plays, everybody loses.

Those advocating arson are missing the point - It's not like his house isn't insured, he'd likely get the entirety of the value. The best bet - make it unlivable somehow, particularly mold. Insurance doesn't cover it for the most part.

My room mate does emergency home restoration... which is just a fancy term for fixing mold and water damage. Home owners insurance most definately covers mold.

As for burning down his house "not doing anything" because of insurance... wasn't everyone all uppity just a few days ago because a judge allowed Madoff to stay in his home awaiting trial intead of being in jail? That might be kind of hard if his house is burned to the ground, insurance or not.

Not to mention if somone firebombed YOUR house... it might make you feel a bit uneasy about your safety, no?
