(Telegraph)   Chinese officials insist that purchases of new "emergency communication command cars" with seat warmers, nav systems and passenger DVD players are "absolutely necessary" in order for them to assist quake victims   (telegraph.co.uk) divider line 52

I like the statement by the provincial official: "The purchases will not be rescinded just because of public pressure."

No, they won't. They'll be rescinded when the home office executes these motherf*ckers for embarrassing the nation and party. They did it with the melamine-in-milk scandal just last week, IIRC.

Ya, makes it feel like I pissed my pants. I never use mine. Leather may be cold at first but it warms up at least as fast as the seat heater does once you're sitting on it. I don't get why people want seat heaters.

I only really have a problem with the DVD player if they can't justify the use, which seems hard to do. Navigation system in a car used for rescue operations? I'm having trouble getting upset about that.

Seat warmers are great on a winter morning though when you don't have remote car starters.

No mention of seat warmers or dvd players in the article. Just some yokel incredulous that a vehicle that the government uses for earthquake response would have a GPS unit in it.

We should try that here. Any public official should be put on trial for betraying the public trust and the death penalty needs to be on the table.

I know they probably don't get a fair trial in china, I just put that trial part in there so I wouldn't sound like a lunatic

Instead of "emergency communication command" they would be much better served by another kind of command:

Exodus
Metal Command

You're gathered here tonight
to heed our metal cry
obeying all our wills
all others you defy
a wall of sonic sound
with amps turned up to ten
our legions are advancing
to battle once again

fists are in the air banging everywhere
thrashing to the sound
faces melting down
it's time to fight for metal tonight
bangers take your stand and obey
our metal command

Isn't it odd how when charity and aid workers need off-roaders they always seem to get top of the line models with carpeting and air con rather than heavy duty models like Land Cruiser "troopies" or Land-Rover Defenders?

/Soldiers make do with painted metal and rubber floored interiors so why can't well paid civilians?

According to TFA, one of the vehicles cost $152,042 dollars by itself. In America, a Nissan Rogue is a Nissan Xtrail in a roundabout way. With every possible option attached to a rogue, you'd be hard pressed to get the tag per unit above $32,000. For a Toyota Land Cruiser, with all options available, the price is $75,609. That price includes the DVD players, blue tooth compatible navigation systems and everything else. One can only begin to wonder how exactly they got the price tag that high, short of inventing a feature that gives the driver oral sex while they drive.

/Just sayin'

DNRTFA, but I can see a reason for the seat warmer (depending on the winters in that part of China) and GPS. The DVD player is stretching, but you *could* run disaster instructions and stuff in that thing. But >150K sounds pretty bogus unless they've loaded it with rescue gear.

Didn't RTFA, but what's so bad about what they are asking for?

If you spend most of your day in a car.. a navigation device is actually a time saver, so no problem there. And why not give them a little comfort? Like seat warmers and a DVD player?

I could see if they were asking for some type of performance sports car, or if they were asking for a bunch of stuff that has ongoing monthly fees (like XM radio or something), sure I could see that being too much.

But if your job was mostly spent driving around in a vehicle all the time.. wouldn't you maybe ask for the vehicle to have a couple of features to make it a little more enjoyable?

I guess it's the part "absolutly necissary" that crosses the line. No.. it's not absolutly necissary, but I don't think it's too much to at least "ask for".

Somehow I doubt that millions of charitable Chinese chipped in their yuan to make earthquake rescue "more enjoyable". No, they probably expect things to be done for the people of Beichuan like "rebuilding their farking town that was utterly leveled in the quake". I know you DNRTFA, but how could you possibly think the creature comforts of rescuers/officials are in any way significant when thousands if not millions in the area are wanting for basic necessities?

A lot of this is tax... to import a car in china you have to pay import duty + VAT + consumption tax, all of which add up to around 50% of the cost of the vehicle. For nicer cars the taxes might be even higher.

Since when is an X-Trail a "luxury car"? The top end one is about £23,000. Range rover it ain't.

Sat nav isn't useful when doing rescues?

farkeruk: Since when is an X-Trail a "luxury car"?
You obviously haven't been to China. Any car that isn't the absolute cheapest crap is a luxury car, and more useful and cost-effective would be portable sat-nav systems like the Navigon I just bought for $250 that can be moved from car to car and used on foot.

In China the government typically buys cars like this then they get used for just about everything BUT official business. I once saw a UNICEF van being used for some obviously not so official UN business, for example.

My guess is that buying these cars is not a legitimate priority, especially with money specifically donated for starving victims.
