Driving through Kissimmee is a nightmare. You are literally dodging the damn day laborers wandering the streets. The ghetto-bugs too. They will walk up to the sidewalk, look directly at your oncoming vehicle, and then step right out in front of you. It is the god-damnedest thing I have ever seen in my entire driving life.

They do not even hurry. They just mosey on out like you have nothing better to do than not hit them.

bongmiester: not sure if these work or not (boston pedestrians almost as bad as the drivers)

Strange, every car that has hit me has been while I was in a crosswalk.

Actually, it seems that the best way to prevent jaywalking is to have drivers hit more pedestrians.

2009-01-23 05:07:44 PM
What did they do to Jaywalkers before the fine, take away their shoes?

2009-01-23 05:08:20 PM
Waaahhhhh, I did something that I know is punishable by a fine and I actually got a fine. Waaahhhhh!

I, for one, am glad to see those self-absorbed douchebag pedestrians held to the fire. They don't pay road taxes, they're only allowed to cross at certain locations and times, and they slow me down, endangering MY and MY PASSENGER'S safety when I have to swerve out of my lane to avoid getting their red goo all over my car...

/How many arguements against cyclists can be used against pedestrians?
//Cyclist, actually stops for pedestrians out of common courtesy.

That and the farking tourists, especially the Brits. Too cheap to rent a car, so they wander back and forth across 192 schlepping from t-shirt shop to buffet to mini-golf, crossing whenever and wherever they like. If K-town really wanted to stop this, thye would just make it legal to mow them down.

Don't forget all of the tourists running across US 192. It's like watching a real-life game of Frogger.

I think you just your own question

2009-01-23 05:57:48 PM
I've often wondered why college towns do not crack down on jaywalkers near campus as a means of revenue enhancement.

2009-01-23 06:03:20 PM
I work in downtown Los Angeles and they're cracking down on it here, too. I have watched cops just sit on their bikes and wait... one actually cornered my boss when he stepped into the crosswalk and the red hand was flashing, and told him that he'd give him a ticket the next time he saw him do it, that even if it was flashing it was considered jaywalking. After the little chit-chat he turned around, saw someone else do it and gave THAT guy a ticket.

A lot of people that jaywalk though (like me) actually watch out for cars though.

The signs will not do a bit of good unless they are in Spanish.

Ummm...a pedestrian killed every 3.5 minutes? There are over 525k minutes in a year, so they are saying that over 150k pedestrians are killed in America every year. *sniff* Smell that? It's bullsh*t.

Indeed, I was thinking more downtown Kissimmee but once you get out by Maingate and the Tourist strip it's a nightmare. I work near I-drive so I get to see the Brits all the time look the wrong way and than start to walk out into traffic.

Indeed. It would seem that 44,000~ are killed each year in Motor Vehicle accidents each year in the states...at least in '05. Now, I didn't delve as far as which types of accidents are covered, but even assuming that 1/2 are jaywalking (which is probably high by a lot) That would only be 22,000. Meaning that as an overshoot, it would be overly presumptuous to assume that a jaywalker is killed every 24 minutes. And given the size and population of the USA I would figure my chances are pretty good.

Source:
Number of deaths: 45,343

Deaths per 100,000 population: 15.3

When you cross at the corner, you can get hit from 4 directions and you have to watch for right-on-reds, turn arrows, light runners, and delayed greens.

When you jaywalk, you only have to look 2 ways and what you see is all there is. There are no surprises, no unpredictable signals to deal with. It's over an order of magnitude safer and simpler when you count the permutations of the variables.

Jaywalking: It's an urban survival skill.

/Does not apply to highways.

2009-01-23 07:55:03 PM
Why can't you just cross the road where and when you want? What's it got to do with the farking pigs? If it's a safety issue why don't the police stop you from eating burgers and all that shiat? Perhaps if some company was profiting from people crossing the road where and when people wanted you'd be able to get away with it.

It's $200 or $300 fine in Hollywood.
Even crossing against a light in a crosswalk with no one around in the wee small hours of the morning.

Most Hollywood residents fart 50 dollar bills.

When you cross at the corner you wait for the white walk signal. No white walk signal then you don't go.

What you said has nothing to do with what he said.

There is a 5-way intersection on my way home where it is safer to jaywalk before you get to it than to try to cross there. For precisely the reasons Nakito names.

I live in Florida, in the Tampa Bay area. I can't COUNT the number of times pedestrians blindly stepped out into traffic, their heads stock still, not looking one way or the other. We need to find a way to capture one of these people and ask 'What the fark'. No, seriously. Yes, there is no way to do this legally, I know.

The problem is, you are assuming these jaywalkers actually LOOK and PAY ATTENTION. They do not. At least not in Florida.
