mongbiohazard: As for the digital compass... well, it's got Google maps enabled GPS, so that's not too useful. I'm sure there's a digital compass on the app store though.

I think you may have misunderstood what a digital compass is for. GPS can't tell which way you're pointed-- just where you are. It can guess which way you're pointed by which way you are moving (if you are moving), but it's only a guess. Software won't add such a device-- a digital compass is a little bit o' electronics that let the phone know which way it is pointed.

Was really excited for the Touch Pro, but I found the interface to be a major disappointment. So still have my clamshell Sprint phone waiting to get on the smartphone bandwagon.

The Icelander: so why not just write an iPhone app that lets you enter the UPC?

There already is one. It's called Save Benjamins and it is a free app.

Why would you use this for groceries? Are you going to drive to another store to save 10 cents on a can of beans?

Bah. The Pre is interesting, I'll grant you, and the weird HTC interface is a bit quirky, yes, but the Touch Pro is the upgraded model of the 6700 and 6800, and, like them, works with my Redfly. Suddenly my PDA phone is my net-connected netbook.

/At work, so the 6700 they supply me for data is connected.
//Has a 6800 that hooks up for personal use.

I got a G1 for christmas so the fact the G2 is coming out so fast doesn't give me a kick.

I love the slideout keyboard. I'll just be glad when cupcake is released so that I can have an onscreen keyboard to for quick text message replies.

It's probably SIM-locked and charges for roaming on Skynet are nasty.

Shadowknight: Sebastokrator: attackingpencil: They're getting rid of the physical keyboard? Why?

I've been waiting to upgrade to one of these super duper next-gen smartphones but haven't bought an iPhone because I simply cannot type fast on the virtual keyboard (I have the iPod Touch, so it's not like I haven't tried).

Allow me to introduce you to the Bold.

If only I didn't have a personal vendetta against AT&T. I'd be all over that. I'm still holding out to someday getting one of the cool smart phones, but right now I'm locked into a contract with Verizon, and can't bring myself to pay those assholes an extra $90 a month on top of my current bill just to use half the features they offer.

Yeah, I'm locked into Verizon right now too...what's the best Verizon smartphone?

No Keyboard?

That's basically convinced me that it'd actually be okay for mobile gaming.

Touch screen + tilt sensor leaves designers with serious limitations for most types of games.

If you don't mind paying for the service, the BlackBerry Storm is suppose to be awesome. The only thing I've heard negative about it is that typing is kind of slow thanks to you only being able to push a single button at a time. If you type too fast, it won't register the second hit, and you'll miss letters. But most people said that once you get used to it, get a rhythm, it's not bad at all.

They have a whole line of Blackberry-esqe phones that are pretty slick, though. And a lot cheaper.

I just swapped my HTC Touch Diamond for a Sony Ericsson C905. The Diamond was just an utter piece of crap, lagged alot, touch screen was shiat, wi-fi was horribly slow. All and all not a good phone, loving the Ericsson though.

The Icelander: About the only things it has that the iPhone doesn't are a digital compass and a camera that focuses.

And real multi-tasking. And cut and paste.

Leave it to a butthurt Apple fanboy to turn this into an iPhone thread.

The compass allows for true locative media like augmented reality. A faux GPS-based compass requires you be moving in order to determine direction, which isn't even necessarily the direction you're facing.

The OS isn't quite as sexy as the Android and or iPhone OSes, but my E71 does a lot they don't do:

Pros over iPhone:
Cut and Paste
Stereo Bluetooth
Turn by turn voice navigation
Apps can run in background
3.2 MP camera with flash/AF/video recording
Upgradable/swappable memory cards
Official tethering support
Swappable battery
Active standby screen with at a glance email and calendar diplay
MMS support
Can forward text messages
Support for Rhapsody subscription music services

Pros over Android:
Desktop syncing
Exchange OTA syncing and psuh email
MS Office document support
Stereo Bluetooth
Support for Rhapsody subscription music service
Turn by turn navigation

$359 unlocked at Newegg.com. It's not quite as sexy and has no touchscreen, but it is a damn good device for work. The browser is also based off of webkit, so it renders pages as well as the iPhone and G1.

Ack, you kids and your "new" technology. It's all about the Nokia 3595. And when you get it wet, you buy another one for $10 (shipped) off eBay.

My phone makes calls! And receives them!

My phone is a couple guys who like camping an a pile of logs on every mountain I can find. I can't send SMS but I can summon the Riders of Rohan when I need them, so that's nice.

There's that, or you could, you know, rub a magnet on a needle and place it on a fulcrum. Like a real compass?

Storm owner here. The virtual click keyboard was a pretty drastic change from my previous Blackberry, but once you get acclimated you're ready to rock. I'll admit the software was a bit buggy at release, but a MAJOR OS update just fixed things up big time.
