But what would happen if the world suddenly went through a phase of accelerated global warming, followed by a large meteor strike, coupled with Yellowstone exploding all over the place then burned to a crisp with a huge solar flare and maybe the core stops rotating and the magnetosphere just plain farkin' disapears???

I think the complete breakdown of society might be entertaining -- to a sociopath. Otherwise, it'd pretty much be constant suckage.

pandabear: The thought of major cities without power for several weeks is very amusing.

It wouldn't be amusing if you lived in said city. A cascade collapse of the national power grid and the major transformers damaged beyond repair is freaking scary as hell. city's depend on electricity to run their water systems so clean water will be the first to go, phones may come back after the solar storm but will go away within days without power.

Our transportation system runs on oil but the systems that distribute the oil through the pipelines run on electricity so oil will be hard to get anywhere and get harder the further north you get. And without easy access to oil, moving food or anything else gets very difficult.

Fema draws resources from unaffected areas of the country to aid people in devastated areas. but if the whole country is devastated Fema is useless.

If this happens on a nationwide scale you do NOT want to be in a major city. Water born disease will hit after a week. food shortages will cause hunger after 2 weeks, after a month people will flee the cities on foot (no gas to run cars) looking for food. most parts of this country cannot support their local populations without an efficient infrastructure.

Simple truth - take away electricity people will being to die.

If one reads of fiery events in very old literature with the understanding of CME in mind.. an interesting theory suggests itself,
such as that in 5000bc humans could look back a few thousand years and know that metal is unreliable and dangerous.[from their point of view]

The Sagas describe Grendle, who was a firey being/dragon who would come flying in the night and set on fire the 'Great House' where all the weapons were kept.
When The Hero waited to meet Grendle, described it as a plasma/fire being hovering amongst the weapons, burning up everything in its reach.

there are Biblical accounts of armies which were mysteriously set afire...the whole camp at once.. & many other 'Fire Events' mentioned in that book, the best ancient history book known to man.

i was daydreaming one day about what the smallest cosmic cause of the cancelling of mankind's steel & concrete system could be, because God seems to use very small causes to do huge rearrangements.

I figured a huge NEMP from the sun for about 3 days would do it, keys right into the 3 days of pitch darkness around doomsday mentioned in a very old book...a sunspot that covers the entire disc of the sun...for 3 days.. even the mountains would be penetrated.

small causes... like a subtle change in the quantum physics of water molecular arrangement.. created [made possible] Rainbows
Also increased earth's gravity, shrunk it, wrinkled it, caused ice caps ...
after the 'big flood' where 1/2 the waters came up from the core of the earth.
If you read the details of the flood very carefully, a number of strange scientifically advanced, interesting things are described.

No. We might get more cancer and the aurora borealis should be pretty kickass. The last reversal predates humans, so there's no eyewitness record, but there's no correlation between extinctions and geomagnetic reversals in the fossil record.

Said by whom? On the scale of the magnetosphere, it'd screw around with things a lot. On the scale of the little bags of water scurrying around the surface, it can't do a damn thing but increase the background radiation a bit by letting more cosmic rays reach the atmosphere.

science is just getting started on earth's radiation history,

No. Science has a pretty good idea about how physics works, and when combined with the shiatloads of physical evidence we have that puts some pretty severe constraints on the sort of things that could have happened.

but ancient people inferred a lot about it they had personal knowledge.

Not about geomagnetic reversal. The last ancestor you had who witnessed that was a Homo erectus.

We humans are the only ones that get those problems, and that's because we can now survive a hell of a lot longer than we used to. When you only last 20 or 30 years before getting eaten by a tiger, it doesn't matter if you'll get arthritis in your 60s.

Animals were larger because there was more oxygen in the atmosphere to sustain the growth. We know this because of dissolved gases in rock and soil core samples.

Let me get this straight. Are you or are you not implying/saying the following things.

A solar flare (or some other natural massive electromagnetic event) can (and has) induce such a current in commonly found metal as to start fires.

The grand canyon was formed from a single giant flood.

Flying carpets worked on waves of harmonized sounds.

A sunspot could theoretically cover a full hemisphere of the sun and remain as such for a period of days.

Acceleration due to gravity at the surface of the earth has changed significantly in the recent (less than 1 billion years) past.

....which also caused the flood due to the change in gravity causing subterranean water to be forced up to the surface, somehow?

I mean, yeah, maybe it's me. Maybe I misread your posts. But that's the impression that I walked away with.

/didn't even get into the "quantum physics of water molecular arrangement.. created [made possible] Rainbows" quote. I'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean.

"The strongest geomagnetic storm on record is the Carrington Event of August-September 1859, named after British astronomer Richard Carrington who witnessed the instigating solar flare with his unaided eye"
