Okay, we seem to have a competent guy in an important key position...can we TRY to make the world a better place now? Please? KTHXBYE?! What with all the religions planning to eradicate each other? I mean, really?! Let´s just stop that effing BS. What´s this...Unicorns against Fairies? Against trolls? Against Rainbow-brite-clad girls? What´s up with that? In the 21st century? Are you f*cking kidding me?!

kbotc: Find a way to make America competitive in manufacturing, because we need something to prop up the USD besides oil.

Well, there's where I'm hoping some of the push for renewable energy technology can help - I know someone upthread laughed at it as "having people all building windmills" but in all seriousness I do think some sort of almost moon race style push for new tech (not just the money, but the whole propaganda arm behind it too) could be a good thing. Whatever country comes up with the new stuff will have a lead on the tech, setting standards, and the jobs from it for a little while.

Heck, none other than Thomas Friedman has written columns saying the same thing, and it's a rare day when I agree with a Thomas Friedman column. So there's gotta be something to it.

Long term though it WILL be a one world economy, and that is GOING to mean big shifts as wages equalize. Figuring out how to minimize the pain while that happens will be a big job no matter who is president over the next few decades.

fluffoh: hulk hogan meat shoes: fluffoh: hulk hogan meat shoes: fluffoh: I really like Michelle's outfit and how she did her eyes. I wonder if she's going to work part-time now or just stay in the white house. How does that work, anyway?

/That would suck if she had to give up her career for her husband's presidency
//She already had to cut back for her kids.

First Lady is a full time job as it is. And I really don't think they need her working in a law office to bring a little bit more money home.

I don't think they need more money-- I'd like to think as a career as self-fulfillment, especially if you went through the work (school, internships, jobs) to get there. Aside from being a career hostess, what else does the First Lady do?

/From lawyer to hostess must be tough.
//Or maybe not.

She has no "official" duties, but the First Lady historically takes on charitable and humanitarian work, chooses causes to champion, and is in the public eye for a multitude of things. And like it or not, she's a mother of two young girls who need their actual mother, not their grandmother, to have a large hand in raising them.

Did your mother work or stay home with you?

/Not loaded, just wondering.

My family situation has nothing to do with anything. I'm just saying that those girls are barely going to see their father and need an actual parent to keep them balanced. They can't be raised by a grandmother alone. They can't be raised by White House maids.

sesher: Okay, we seem to have a competent guy public speaker in an important key position

Obama has done absolutely nothing in his career except talk a good game. You helped elect a guy that would be a late night infomercial host if he wasn't in politics.

Okay. Enough already. Get to work you goofy bastard!

But isn't that what most politicians are?

Since I´m German, in Germany, I sincerely doubt I did *anything* to help elect Obama, since...well...we didn´t elect him. But your criticism is noted.

i have nothing to add other than your name made me LOL real hard. that was one of the threads that i will always remember. would've emailed you, but you don't have one in your profile.

oh, i suppose i could add something for the bitter hag libby -- people at my job gave up hours, switched shifts, donated money and all kinds of shiat so an employee here could not only keep her job, but also travel to another state to bury her mother.

He's dancing in there.

LOLs, I think the level of Presidential dancing is going to be raised. I'll bet he even kicks Reagan's Hollywood ass.

Someone was playing Celebration by Kool and the Gang a few minutes ago. Don't recognize the current song.

Zamboro: I was there to see it live on the campus' outdoor LED display.

Took with my watch, didn't time it right, wound up getting (I think?) Michelle.

Perhaps you shouldn't have skipped English class...

Has anybody else noticed how useless Soledad O'Brien is?

2009-01-20 05:28:17 PM
BTW, (serious question and half-assed thread-jack), what´s with the mysticism that American people in general can´t pronounce Umlauts? You know, the ü´s and ä´s and ö´s and ... such like. We have an moderatly attractive female MILF American guest commentator on German TV right now - LIVE - who does extremely well - without any effort, seemingly.

Heh, she's always been rather useless. Personally, I think she only keeps her job because she satisfies about 17 different Affirmative Action quotas.

/oh, and because she's cute.

Bush didn't give a speech today.

libbynomore2: yeah, someone is going to willingly give up hours so someone else keeps their jobs....never gonna happen....

NEVER, EVER

Cynical? yes

True? Yes

actually, not true. There was a gallup wall street times poll a few weeks ago on this very thing, and the vast majority of people said that they would take a reduction in hours to save jobs.

My own office, full of very average, even below average folks unanimously said they'd gladly work 4 days, lose a day of pay every week, to save their co workers jobs. Better all of us have slightly less than some of us have none.

I was kind of surprised, but it's true.

Has Obama's latest gaffe been mentioned, yet? Granted, this is not as bad as stating there are 57 US states, but he did say he was the 44th citizen to take the oath of office. Except, he's the 43rd citizen to take the oath of office. Grover Cleveland was "both the 22nd and 24th President of the United States" of America. Since Grover Cleveland holds two spots, that makes Obama the 43rd to take the oath, but the 44th to take the office.

/did you notice I stayed away from the whole "prove he's a citizen" troll? ... D'oh!

The Boobies on WhiteHouse.gov.

Obama got the Boobies on WhiteHouse.gov? Why, I never!

Did they confuse it with whitehouse.com (NSFW) or something?

I like that I can finally watch an interview/speech/whatever without cringing due to horrible public speaking ability. If nothing, at least Pres. Obama has that going for him.
