I got new kittens!! I have been a long Caturday lurker, but my last kitty, Constantine, had a bad meeting with a car :-( It has been several years since I had a kitty, and now I got blessed with two rescue kittens.

Please, meet Julius (the grey) and Messalina (the black) the new loves of my life, brother and sister, 9 weeks old and absolutely INSANE! I am in heaven when I am with them, and they take care of me.

She is the Alpha kitty here, and he is sweet... Can they have captions to welcome them?

Whee, I finally woke up to catch the Caturday goodness. (C'mon, I'm on Pacific time. :P) Thanks, lajimi, CanisNoir, and missionpants. :) Oh, and yes, Sonny DOES love the ferrets. They're like his personal TV or something. He'll just sit there and watch them for minutes on end. He also tries to pet them through the cage. Awwwwwwwwww! :D

They're also tearing around the house now with a case of the kitty-crazies. Me & the hubby are sitting at our respective computers so we don't get run over!

I apologize in advance for this one, but it has to be shown. I recently visited a shelter that is sorely in need of donations -cat litter, cat food, money, anything. They get an average of 20 cats a day and, out of that, find homes for an average of two. The shelter is not a no-kill, and while they have room to show the most adoptable cats, many hundreds of others are euthanized every year because there is no money and little space.

Cats that would be placed immediately with foster cat-parents were they just ninety miles north (Pittsburgh's record is much better and their shelters far better funded, though few shelters are adequate,) are instead kept for a mere five days, if that, and then put down. 'The best' cats are spayed or neutered and then kept in a tiny room of cages for five days, during which they may be taken home ...but with the economy being what it is and the state being a poor one, let us just say that the chances are not good for any furry ones. Laid-off workers and people facing foreclosure rarely go to pick out new animals, and with West Virginia being the way it is, farmers seeking barn cats are more likely to breed their own feral colonies rather than adopt the spayed and neutered animals from the county facility.

About the only good thing that can be said for the cats here is that they do get love from volunteers. West Virginia University sends a steady stream of willing kids in to care for the furry ones -but the dorms don't allow even the best-behaved of pets and neither do most apartments here. The turnover rate for said volunteers is therefore extremely high. And why not? Could you stand getting to love animals that you knew were doomed by your landlord's inflexibility?

This is a poor area, and even those people who do have the wherewithal to feed, shelter and love a pet rarely have the $80 or so it takes for spaying and neutering. A group (M-SNAP.org, pops,)has recently formed to combat this problem, but as you can imagine, a state with more food banks than hospitals rarely has spare cash for animals. There's a drive now to collect aluminum cans to raise money for spaying and neutering, but with no advertising budget, even the fact that the Canine Shelter is right next to the county recycling facility hasn't brought in much.

The system for reporting a missing pet also only keeps alerts for five days, and unless local owners are vigilant -well, it's not something we like to think about, but that's the way things are in West Virginia. (And this is one of the state's best county shelters!) While I was there, a man brought a Rubbermaid bucket literally full of puppies, and dropped them off. I don't like to think about how many kittens, strays and ferals are dropped off each day, but it's too many, and there's not very much anyone here can do.

Anyway, the cat pictured was there this past Thursday, still groggy from being fixed, but very loving and nuzzly to this photographer. (There were others; this one's picture came out the best.) I would have taken this or another shelter cat home myself, but Morgantown city law only lets one keep three animals total. My place's full up with my ex-ferals, I don't have much money, and the Caturday crowd is the only group I could think of who might be able and willing to help the Morgantown, West Virginia cats.

Such a sad story and unfortunately, one that resonates across the country. I hope this illicits some donations.

Also, anyone without a cat (that wants one) but can't be saddled with the cost of vet bills right now should contact a local rescue group and foster! Many of them pull cats from high kill shelters and are non profits, so they are able to pay for the cost of vetting the animals. Its a great thing.

Hey, anyone have any idea why so many 'broken picture links' every Caturday? It's becoming 'Cat'astrophic. (sorry) I usually get maybe a third of the way through the thread, then broken pic links the rest of the thread, save for the rare "there" pic. I hate to miss so many kittys.

If it's my crappy dialup, well, that will be gone by sometime next week. I'm getting high speed.

Most browsers are set up to time out after a minute or so. Basically it stops trying because it's moving too slow. You can change how many posts you see per page, and with fewer posts you will get fewer timeouts.

Getting something faster than dialup will definitely help.

and in the spirit of caturday...

also, want to give a special caturday shoutout to my fuzzies for waking me in the middle of the night on thursday to alert me to the fact that my upstairs neighbors furnace was freaking out and starting to melt through the pvc pipes in the basement. thanks to the kitties, the only real damage was to our brains from breathing in noxious fumes. first and last time ill ever appreciate them waking me up at 2:30am.
