Just for the record, Jeff Monson is not famous, and he's not what the general public would recognize as a "champion." We're not counting Abu Dhabi Combat Club titles here, people.

Jeff Monson isnt' THAT famous outside of diehard MMA viewers, and aside from some very small shows hasn't held a major title.

The picture above appeared in ESPN the magazine...Monson is a self described anarchist, etc.

Monson isn't a famous champion. He's won a few sport grappling tournaments. He does some MMA fighting but he's been whipped by everyone who was any good he fought. He's a roidhead attention whore.

He has a fairly reasonable position; though I'd say his grasp on 'anarchy' seems a tad shaky.

But at least he's not being a little biatch about getting busted.

I guess that depends on your definition of "famous" and "obscure." I consider "famous" to refer to people that are known to the general public. There's a handful of MMA guys that might fit that bill these days, but Monson is far from one of them. That said, yeah, he's fought in the UFC and even had a title shot against Sylvia two years ago, so I suppose he's not exactly obscure either.

FTA:The graffiti cost $19,000 to clean up, court papers state.

I sincerely doubt it cost that much for paint or even sand blasting. It might, I'm no expert on this sort of thing. Really, a ten year sentence for vandalism? That never seemed to deter the taggers in my neighborhood. Either way, I'm sure it's the eeeebil anarchist symbol that made them go for that particular charge. I certainly don't put it past the prosecutor.

he says "protest the economic inequality at home"

what a load of garbage.

Is he protesting the fact that he gets paid more for winning and being a champion? Is he advocating the every person in his field get the same pay and reward. If you really believe in economic equality start fixing it in your back yard and maybe people will follow.

This is NOT a country that is about economic equality in terms of equal outcomes. Some people work harder, are more talented and in some cases are more lucky. Yup. They get more.

Stop whining.

So if I see an anarchist symbol painted on a wall, I'm supposed to think something other than, 'Look what some dumbass did'? If you want to leave a message, try leaving one that is intelligent and one that doesn't make a mess for someone else to clean up. A taped-on poster with a coherent message would have been a million times better and a lot less felony.

/meaningless gestures are meaningless

Calling this guy a champion shows that subby hasn't a clue what he is talking about. There are multiple MMA titles out there but only a few that are actually recognized by the MMA community. Jeff Monson is a mid-tier fighter that never accomplished much in the UFC. Yes, he got a title shot against Tim Sylvia but he lost a decision of the unanimous variety. That fight created somniferous eyes throughout my living room.

TheChemist: That never seemed to deter the taggers in my neighborhood.

How to get revenge on taggers:

- Draw them into a conversation about how tagging other people's property is wrong
- Receive inevitable "you can't own property, man" and "property is evil" rant.
- Spraypaint all their media

He was the ADCC (Over 99KG) champion back in 2005. There's no denying that anyone who can win at ADCC can be considered one of the best in regards to grappling. Technically that supports Subby's statement. Although the word 'former' definitely belongs in front of it.

ADCC is frigging elite.

Also, Jeff Monson has a master's degree in psychology, and his entrance music against Tim Sylvia was Imagine. He's kidn of funny.

A friend of mine processed invoices. He got to the point where he was processing 3x more daily than the average employee. Did he get paid more? No, his boss spraypainted a keyboard gold and gave it to him in an awards ceremony. This is a major company. He no longer works that hard.

The $19,000 figure is pure bullshiat. I've cleaned graffiti before. That symbol would need only a few squirts from a bottle of Graff-off. A gallon of that stuff can clean several square feet and isn't all that expensive.

And 10 years for spray-painting? What a crock.

tweekster: Well there really isn't any martial arts fighter that the general public would recognize.

The "general public" isn't a good barometer for these things. I have no idea what any football star who isn't Brett Favre looks like. That includes Tom Brady, LT, TO, Pacman, etc. I have no idea what they look like, because I'm not a football fan.

I also couldn't pick out most NHLers. Baseball, I'm a bit better at it, but even so, there's still about 500 of 728 active players I couldn't identify. Basketball, I can show you Kobe, Shaq, Steve Nash, Yao Ming, and most of the Raptors, but that's it.

MMA is just too young. It will become a popular sport that isn't niche, but it needs the development time that all of the other sports have had. Until then, guys like Randy, Chuck, Ken Shamrock, Tito, GSP, etc., they're the ones most likely to be famous. Though I regret that most of my non-MMA-inclined friends, when asked to pick a famous fighter, will pick Kimbo Slice.
