I'd like to taste her sushi.

They do DNA analysis in high school?

Wait, I thought of a better perv comment...

I'd like to leave my DNA on her sushi.

Yeah, that's it. Mods, please delete my previous entry.

Now having watched the video, that's both cool (that she undertook this project) and disturbing (how did the restaurants or distributors not catch this?).

She is very articulate and intelligent, as opposed to the reporter who kept trying to talk over her and really seemed to want to talk to her dad.

Makes me wish I'd never worked in broadcasting. I suspect that my IQ dropped sharply during those years.

But, back to the young woman. I was impressed by a number of things, especially the fact that she was very gracious towards the restaurants themselves, and intends to continue eating sushi. I don't think anybody can fault her attitude ;)

SpinStopper: She is very articulate and intelligent,

By articulate you mean that she started every sentence with "Yeah"? (Yeah was about every 3rd word for her as well...like, you know what like I mean like?)

Yeah, is that what you meant by articulate.

Now for real observation. Did not any of you see the size of her neck? I'm sure she could fit my entire California Roll down there if you know like what I mean, yeah.

I'll give her some DNA, but she has to close her eyes and suck it through a hose.

I guess I'm a bit jaded by the language skills of the teenagers in my neighborhood ;)

When this was news last August, I was a little impressed and admired their initiative. Until I read more and found out that her father is a scientist and early proponent of the use of DNA bar coding.

Parental involvement in their project distracts from the 'junior scientists' angle.

2009-01-14 09:08:35 PM
I'd analyze her DNA.

2009-01-14 09:10:39 PM
That a 15 year old undertook this project is just awesome. We need smarter kids.

That being said, starting every sentence with "yeah"... well.. jeez

2009-01-14 09:10:45 PM
Is our children learning?
Well subby isn't, but hopefully the other children are.

wtf r her arms REALLLLLLLLLLY long or is it just me?

Im not surprised. I used to be a sushi chef and we regularly used albatross meat or whatever was convenient at the time.

2009-01-14 09:11:55 PM
the reporter who kept trying to talk over her and really seemed to want to talk to her dad.

Perhaps because he was the one who actually knew what the hell he was talking about.

aegisalpha: Now having watched the video, that's both cool (that she undertook this project) and disturbing (how did the restaurants or distributors not catch this?).

My guess is that the restaurants were just happy they were getting a good deal and the distributors were the ones mislabeling the fish. Or the restaurants were the ones mislabeling the fish.

2009-01-14 09:12:57 PM
Um, I think, you know, that I'd sequency my DNA, yea, on her face, like you know in the iran and such.

2009-01-14 09:13:01 PM
Wow, that was a tough science project, cut some fish, drop it in a vial of alcohol and fed ex it to Canada. A+!

2009-01-14 09:13:01 PM
aegisalpha: They do DNA analysis in high school?

No, likely her only exposure to it was through her father thus far.
And she did not do a DNA analysis, the lab she sent it to did.

2009-01-14 09:13:15 PM
i think she should try eating some food instead of sending it all to the lab.

2009-01-14 09:13:50 PM
This isn't "something that's never been done before."

There are plenty of articles out there about distributors relabeling cheaper cuts as something that is more expensive and being busted by inspectors who would obviously have to do an analysis to be certain that's what happened.

2009-01-14 09:13:53 PM
sequency? I must be drunk.

preezie: wtf r her arms REALLLLLLLLLLY long or is it just me?

Would those be arms? I have drawn stick figures with thicker arms.

I'd leave my semen in her vagina.

Damnit, now her excessive "yeah"s irritated me too.

albatross? perhaps you mean albacore.

Interesting how they avoided mentioning which stores/restaurants sold correctly vs. incorrectly labeled fish. That would seem to be a rather important bit of information in a local newscast. They could probably have avoided any liability by simply saying "we tested fish from store X and found it to be correctly labeled" while omitting any mention of stores with incorrectly labeled fish.

Without that information, the story contained no useful information of any kind.

aegisalpha: They do DNA analysis in high school?

Reminds me of the Star Trek episode where the junior high age kid is doing calculus.

lordaction: By articulate you mean that she started every sentence with "Yeah"? (Yeah was about every 3rd word for her as well...like, you know what like I mean like?)

You must not have much exposure to high school kids. She's very articulate compared to most kids her age.

As has been said before, her dad is a pioneer of "DNA barcoding". She did nothing but send samples to a lab where they were analyzed by techs and computers and more importantly, with the cross contamination in her system, it's an extremely unreliable method to identify samples conclusively.

Don't be duped into thinking that her mom died when she was very young and her step dad beats her, and the only way she could make it in this world was to bury herself in science that would benefit mankind. She had a project she could pick herself, she was well versed (or had proximity to somebody that was well versed) about a single lab protocol that other kids wouldn't know to do, and she had the initiative, possibly on her own, to go try it out and now they're giving results without truly significant amounts of data. Nobody would care if the dad did this work and this way his stuff gets out there either way.

I love seeing young people get into science because it reminds me of me, but this seems a bit glamorized.

/Hope I'm wrong and she really enjoys science
//Hope she knows that one test doesn't always mean definite answer
///Hope daddy doesn't push her too hard into his own work
////Hope scientists can keep the slashy off the endangered species list.

I don't see the problem with her vernacular. Her speech pattern is fine.
I agree she is way too skinny.

Heh, the comments on the video. Reminds me why I never put up anything on YouTube.
