Ray is used to this kind of thing: he ran across the Sahara desert a couple of years ago: http://rayzahab.com/.

They did about 1.5 marathons each day, for 111 days straight -- in the sand. If you've ever tried running in sand, you know how tough this is.

It's nice to see someone actually doing something, instead of just talking about it. I think he deserves all the bacon he wants.

"Eh" is used mostly in rhetorical situations. "It's so cold out there I froze my left nut off, eh?"

A proper use of "eh" is to turn a declarative sentence into a question. One proper use in the headline would have been:

Bacon. There's nothing it can't do, eh?

Most certainly.

It comes at the end of a declarative statement, but is lifted as an interrogative. To wit: " ... a diet of deep fried bacon, cheese and butter, eh?" This tone invites comment, correction, agreement, reinforcement, assertions of prior knowledge from the listener.

Alternatively, the first line could be left as is, while the second line would be simply, "Bacon, eh?"

Just like Chinese food in China, where it is more commonly referred to as "food".

Eep! I wonder what their cholesterol levels were right after the race.

Or does that stuff even build up when you're burning so many calories?

Canadian bacon is to Canadians what Corona is to Mexicans:
Foul stuff that's not consumed in-country, but rather exported where it's viewed as exotic and classy.

If that's all they ate I bet their cholesterol is normal or better.
I proved it to myself with blood tests and a low carb diet.
If all you eat is fat and some protien, you stay warm, satisfied and lose weight AND lower your cholesterol.
Now add a little bit of carbs to that menu and then you turn into a fatass with high cholesterol fast.
/beer really makes it bad and sends triglycerides sky high.

Of course not. Everyone knows that everything past the Ontario border is essentially unoccupied territory...

Think of the use of "eh?" as Canadians trying to be polite while using slang. You wouldn't want to be too assertive of a fact, would you? That would be rude. Eh allows the person being spoken to to interject a comment, hopefully a positive one, which allows the speaker to continue without stepping on any toes. If the listener disagrees, then would be an appropriate time to tell the speaker to "take off ya hoser".

Actually, it's better baked than fried. Put (non-teflon) metal "cooling" rack on a (non-teflon) baking sheet, put bacon on rack, put in the oven about 350. Wait until crispy to taste. Takes a bit longer than frying (20-60 min, depending on thickness and preferred crisp level), but it comes out pre-drained.

Save the grease for frying mushrooms. =)

This is for american-style bacon? Does it make the same amount of smoke as in a frying pan?

Riche: Or does that stuff even build up when you're burning so many calories?

If the calories they're burning are greater than or equal to the calories they consume, the answer is probably no. You need excess cholesterol in the blood stream to cause the buildup of plaque that you're thinking of, but take note of the caveats below.

Hypercholesterolemia is just one risk factor for contracting Coronary artery disease. There are others. EX, smoking.

Americans have some sort of smoked ham product that is often called Canadian bacon, but AFAIK it's not Canadian at all; I think it's a cheap American knockoff of "real" Canadian bacon, i.e. back bacon (which is delicious).

Also, if a Canadian mentions bacon, by default they're referring to "streaky" bacon (same as in the States).

pivazena: This is for american-style bacon? Does it make the same amount of smoke as in a frying pan?

Preferably thick cut slab bacon; thin cut works the same but much faster; manually thick-cut pork jowl bacon (I'm told) tends to be slower, but again about the same results.

The smoke level is much less, because you do the cooking below the smoke point of the grease. This can be done with a frying pan, but the temperature control is tricky on electric stovetop, and trickier still on gas.
