Ouch. Are you using to heat an olympic-sized swimming pool, or is your utility company assraping you? $587 would probably pay my gas bill for 8 or 9 months.

15-20 months for me.

I actually just got off the phone with my gas company after their 'estimate' algorithm decided that instead of me using an avg of .34 therms a day it was perfectly fine to use 1.99 therms a day when I was out of town for most of the month.

Oh, I don't turn on my heat regardless of the temp outside, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies...

Our total gas & electric combined was $400 for November, with most of it being the gas.

3000 Sqft. 1908 construction house with a 1970s furnace, eastern Iowa winter. Also, we forgot that we kept our bills low in the late winter of last year (moved in at the tail end of the cold weather) by keeping it at 50 degrees, not 60. Oops.

/ Yes, we're getting a new furnace installed in a month or so.
// Air-source heat pump, too.
/// And some blown-in insulation for the walls.

I thought about this too. Maybe the bypass only goes to the swimming pool and he was still paying for gas used in his home. It still seems like a lot of gas just for the pool but if it was free maybe he never shut the heater off.

The neighbor is a jerk but maybe didn't realize that the guy would get jail time.

In other words, he could steal or not anytime he wanted. He likely left the meter on for about a quarter of the month or so.

i'm sure he only bypassed some using the valve. it said he shaved money of his bill, not eliminated the bill. maybe got free gas for pool but still paid for house

Blow-in is nice at first, but tends to settle after a few years and therefore not last as long as the regular stuff.

the bypass heated his pool and the builing around it--my friend works for WE-ENERGIES and the guy in question is a real asshole--he figured he got away with it for so long they'd never prosecute--WRONG--i'm glad his neighbor snitched--farking white collar criminal--about time they got some jail time--the best part is he's STILL gonna appeal--they found the bypass--there is NO WAY he didn't know about it..pay the fine and do your time you rich fark!!!

Check this, apparently our gas meter had been broken for at least 7 years. We only received a minimal hook-up fee each month, like $2.00. I was unaware of this since my wife takes care of the utility bills. Soon after we had a new pool installed, I fired up the heater to make sure everything was working, and that's when I noticed that the meter was broken, because it should have been spinning fast enough to slow down the earth's rotation.
Being all concerned with Karma and such, I called PG&E to let them know the meter was jacked up and my wife overheard the conversation and was making all kinds of signals trying to get me to STFU. Bottom line is, the nimrod meter reader, nor anyone in the billing dept at PG&E noticed we were not using any gas for 7 years.

I'm still waiting for the Karma payoff for me squealing on myself.

BikerRay

If he bypassed the meter, how do they know how much he stole?

Simple math? The next meter up the distribution chain will have the total output in it for that area. Assuming the other meters in the area are legit you can just take the upstream total, subtract the usage from the other meters and you are left with the real total. Compare to the bypassed meter and you can calculate the amount stolen. Easy.

barefoot in the head

He owes money, so the answer is "put him in a cage". Yes, that's logical and civil.

So I can defraud you and I shouldn't go to jail, because it's just some owed money? Sounds like a great deterrent for white collar criminals.
