They were going to fine the teacher instead of arresting her until they found out that she had no money. The teacher -- just like her student -- was flat busted.

How many girls had to take their shirts off?

There seems to be a lot missing from that story.

Is it strange that that makes me cry a little, just on the inside?

As long as they're paid so poorly, what's going to improve it?

Start paying $60k base and all of a sudden there's competition banging the door down at all schools.

you're not thinking of the people who were disappointed to not see actual tits

you can't go building up people's hopes like that.

This seems sketchy and lacking details. I can't see an adult asking a 6-year-old(autistic at that) to just take their shirt off.

The only possible excuse would be if there was a shirt under the stripped shirt. Then I can see her taking away the distraction without causing any type of incident.

2009-01-08 04:48:07 PM
This story has a lot of important details missing. Maybe she had a striped sweatshirt over another shirt, therefor removing the majority of perviness.

A 6 year old girl or 6 year old boy would look the same. Not sure what the big deal is about them.

50 seconds too slow...

Duct tape the students' hands to her chair. Maybe remove the shirt to further prove the teacher has control. Strike for higher pay/raises.

True, I also think that if the teacher were a 50 year old male rather than a 50 year old female, this would be a much bigger concern.

Right now it's "meh."

Sounds like you have the sick mind. We all thought of a kid sitting there in another shirt.

Fact Man: Start paying $60k base and all of a sudden there's competition banging the door down at all schools.

There's a $50k base here (with your masters), in an area with a relatively low cost of living, and last year, among the reasons for dismissals were the teacher who swore during class and the one who threatened to bring a gun to school. It's not just about pay so much as it's the universal HR problem: a certain group of people can sail through an interview, impress any reasonable interviewer, and still be total morons.

2009-01-08 04:51:20 PM
My dramatic interpretation of the teacher's side of the story:

"So I go to school, another boring Wednesday. Retard class. Little Betty was wearing another striped shirt like her parents owned a striped shirt warehouse.

"Betty kept scratching the shirt. It's not that much different than any other day (she DOES have mental problems) but then it just reached a point where I wanted to know if the girl had rashes or something else under her shirt that was causing this scratching.

"I asked her nicely, 'what's wrong with your shirt, Betty?'. She said something inaudible then stared at the overhead fan for a few seconds. 'Can I see what's underneath it?' Keep in mind I'm a 53 y/o mother in a class full of other mentally handicapped students.

"Just as she takes her shirt off, I can tell there's nothing wrong with her chest. I was relieved. The worst thing I can imagine is child abuse. She then gets a little out of control, she rips the shirt completely off and throws it across the room. I tried to discipline her, but it's always difficult with a child with these types of problems at this age.

"At that moment, Ms. Julie walked in the room and her jaw dropped as fast as the packet of paper out of her hands. There was no stopping her; we have not been friends for the entire school year. It was obvious to me she was going to try to complain, but without hearing the exchange taking place in the Principal's office, I was a goner for sure."

Ok, probably not accurate but I have to defend the teacher. The setup seems a little strange to me unless there was significant problems with this in the past.

You would be amazed at some people. My son was physically hurt by the school's speach path. Then, to cover her tracks she lied about it and accused him (6 at the time) of attacking her.

Unfortunately, she was unaware that his consultant was standing outside the class the whole time.

With masters? How they can be that unprofessional, then, is beyond me.

Where I am, base is around $30k, which explains why there's no competition and anybody can just walk into a classroom position.

Why should the teacher spend more than 3% (1/30th) of the time on one student than the rest? Special needs kids need special instruction and time. Don't waste special time on the average.

The connection is that one of this girl's autistic "ticks" was apparently striped shirts. She had one on, for some reason. Rather than "scratching," I'm assuming it was some sort of "playing" with the shirt.

From a guy who apparently knows "nothing whatsoever" about autism, there is an increased sensory issues where the child or adult will see/feel/taste things very differently.

/don't take my word for it

Most cases of autism are so mild that you "mainstream" the kid into a normal classroom because they no longer need a ton of attention. They go through therapy until they're around K-1st age, and then go into a normal classroom and are never much of a bother to the class. Actually, they're usually the quietest ones.

A tick such as repetitive motions, attraction to striped shirts, or OCD compulsions, are always to be discouraged, even if not disturbing others, but that hardly takes any time or effort from the teacher. A quick "stop that" and taking away whatever they're doing stops that, class resumes.

Autism, in most cases, is nowhere near as severe as "mentally retarded" cases, as we know them.
