That headline is probably more grammatically correct than 95% of the comments on my local newspaper's website.

At least you have that going for you, Florida.

At least you had spelled floriduh correctly!

2009-01-08 02:02:01 PM
That seems incredibly unlikely. I've lived in Florida for over 20 years, and can't think of one time I've ever met an adult who couldn't read.

You'd think at a rate of 1 out of 5, I'd have met a few by now.

My old boss once posted a not that said "this is unexpectable." I didn't have the heart to tell her, and I'm sure most of those employees wouldn't notice. The next time she had to write a note she actually asked me how to spell it.

/I still love her like a mom.

I was 11 or so when I first moved to Florida, and a couple of neighborhood kids introduced themselves and we decided to play trivia pursuit.

I was all horrified as the kids worked hard to sound out each word on the question cards. I had never met another kid before who could hardly read. When I got sick of waiting five minutes for them to sound out the sentence and offered to read it for them, they got mad and quit the game, and went back to finding toads in the streets to hit with sticks.

sigh.

Well it tends to be a bit of a negative thing. So people tend not to publicize it. You probably have met many but they didn't greet you like "Hi am Andy I'm illiterate". Most people who can't read learn tricks to get by

I see a repeat of the 2001 Orange Bowl that I attended. A favored and arrogant home team (FSU) vs the underdog (with no chance) OU. The best part (besides the victory, parties, and titty bars) was seeing a van with a life sized Chris Wienke on the top F'ing a bent over Jason White in the arse. Stay classy Florida football fans.

How often do you ask a person whether they can read? Illiterate adults have generally become masters at hiding their illiteracy by the time they graduate from High School.

Well, it's worse here, according to this article, and I believe it. It's not as though the illiterate are peppered randomly throughout the state, and I suspect your social circles don't expose you to the types that can't read.

When I was volunteering in the projects (first with an after school program, then with GED tutoring), statistics like these became a lot more believable.

It is possible that some of those adults are literate, just not in the English language. It would be interesting to see what the basic literacy rate in Spanish is.

Favored by who, exactly? I knew we were gonna tank that game. For one, Minnis was out for the game, and I had been watching them all season from the sidelines (student, free tix, woot!) be a 2nd half offense (above average at best) and we were headed into the game with an amazing 2nd half defense. We were screwed.

Oh, and you think that's classy? Try being a FSU fan travelling to G'ville for the UF v FSU game. UF fans are the worst in the world. When they come here we treat them like gold before we rape them (well... we used to rape them... but we still treat them well).

And for what it's worth... Weinke was a great NCAA QB, but he's a horrible human being. Ask any Tallahassee cop and they'll probably spit on his grave. Makes the rest of the Criminoles look saintly.

Hey, at least we have a Rhodes Scholar this year.

well that was the year where my parents moved us to another school. Typically at that age children are reading at a slightly more advanced level. You'd think people at an English speaking private school could read in engrish, but apparently that isn't the case. I can speak, read and write in 2 languages. And yeah i put that on my resume:)

in some cases it might just take a chickenfarker to get some people to lrn2read

2009-01-08 02:22:21 PM
I will wager that when you look at something like state Averages, the high level of recent immigrants from places like Haiti has some effect on these numbers.
