Well, if you want to turn it into a pissing contest, the NCC currently only clears about half of the available length of the Rideau Canal. They should go all the way down to Carleton University, but for whatever reason stop at Dow's Lake.

And anyway, who the heck wants to go outside in Winnipeg? What is it, about a million below right now?

Dude, you don't get it. Winnipeggers are farking party animals simply because the winters are so cold. We just stay inside in the winter to drink and fark.

Then in the beautiful summers, we go outside to drink and fark. And roller skate.

Both cities are right.

I like that Fox Soccer Report is broadcast from Winnipeg, that hotbed of soccer. New reporter is cute, too!

Whether or not it's the longest, the canal is clearly a better experience and actually somewhat useful as a way to travel across the city if you like skating.

My money's on Ottawa because I assume that the temperature has to be at least 15C below any other part of the country due to the cold hearted politicians living there....but that's just me. :)

Just how many people actually go to Winnipeg to skate on this river? At least in Ottawa we get enough tourists to justify clearing that much ice.

Lived in Winterpeg when I was a kid ... we just about froze when we moved East. -40 and dry worked for me. You'd think they'd use some of that natural ice for curling.

Winnipeg is also the slurpee consumption capital of the world. It doesn't matter what the farking temperature is outside, we will drink our slurpees, dammit!

And Ottawa is full of whiny egocentrists that assume that if something is happening to them it is the worst the country has ever seen and they are such noble martyrs for bearing it. Meanwhile they scream (in both official languages) for government assistance for the slightest inconvenience or mishap.

I live in Winnipeg - when they did this last year, it was a pretty narrow strip they cleared in the area I saw. Something like six feet wide, but I was on a bus going over the river at the time, so that may not be 100% accurate. They probably clear more area near The Forks.

They should go by square footage cleared. I think the Rideau Canal trail would win handily.

My diagnosis is that you have an acute case of "Prairie Province" syndrome (similar to the American variant known as "Coast Envy").
