* They are white.
* They are female.
* They are young.

* They are middle class or upper-middle class.
* They are the center of a mystery: either "where is she" or "who killed her."

linkAn astounding 2,300 Americans are reported missing every day, including both adults and children. But only a tiny fraction of those are stereotypical abductions or kidnappings by a stranger.

For example, the federal government counted 840,279 missing persons cases in 2001. All but about 50,000 were juveniles, classified as anyone younger than 18.

Only about 100 missing-child reports each year fit the profile of a stereotypical abduction by a stranger or vague acquaintance.

Two-thirds of those victims are ages 12 to 17, and among those eight out of 10 are white females, according to a Justice Department study. Nearly 90 percent of the abductors are men, and they sexually assault their victims in half of the cases.
-----

Pasqualini said the media tends to focus on "damsels in distress"-typically, affluent young white women and teenagers.

The media's dilemma is that government research shows that victims of nonfamily abductions and stereotypical kidnappings are most at risk of injury, sexual assault or death. "Damsel" cases may be the exception, but they often are the most urgent.

Minority families are less likely to offer a reward.
Why tune into a sweepstakes with no golden scroll?

This guy has it all wrong. He wants to know why the media picks up on these stories. It's because their coverage turns a profit. It's better to ask why these stories are profitable. Why are viewers drawn to these stories time and time again? This question will lead us to the real demons.

/ Sex and rejection

In fairness, we don't care about ugly white people either. And we shouldn't; attractive people are more important.

If Naomi Campbell was missing, I'd be scouring the countryside.

Nobody wants to hear about important things like the budget or foreign policy. That's boring crap for nerds.

People want to hear exciting shiat about good looking people. Who's hooking up with whom? Who's in trouble? Who's in danger?

The problem isn't "the media" the problem is us. The media talks about BS because that's what we want to hear.

A good murder involved a debutante, a cheerleader, a young, beautiful heiress. A bad murder, the one you didn't have to cover, involved street thugs, or gang members or drug dealers.

Given that the murder of a gang member is entirely routine, and the killing of a young heiress surprising, I'm not sure what this guy's point is.

The public buys the product, and the media sells the product shaped to appeal to the maximum-size buying public. WE (collectively) demand "Missing White Girl."

I usually turn off those stories, and rarely click links to them online, but obviously I'm some sort of freak outlier.

If only someone who follows the media for a living would write a book about this and other media obsessions, say from a small town in the rolling green hills of middle america where he would have the distance from the trouble of the city with which to reflect, while sipping imported beer.

I like how everyone's outraged at the evil racist media, even though whites far outweigh blacks in the country, so statistically it's not as bad... but the fact that half the population (i.e. males) are ignored is OK.

Because men are all evil. And the white ones the evilest of all. Damn us, for getting all the breaks in life. Deep down I really hate women and black people. At least that's what the media tells me.

What was "urgent" in the Caylee Anthony after the first week or so?

What was "urgent" in the JonBenet case that it made the news NIGHTLY for over a year and still turns up?

"They have advocates who are capable of keeping their names in the news."

I think that along with

"Two-thirds of those victims are ages 12 to 17, and among those eight out of 10 are white females"

Is the core of all this.

Move along, nothing to see here.

Maybe minorities should be more attractive or become victimized in a more interesting way. Thats so typical, blame everyone else but dont take any responsibility for fixing the problem yourself.

Right man for the job; back in the days of slavery, you couldn't really justify a man who had 0 experience in politics, not to mention an agenda that would destroy the economy for the time, being the president.

Now times are different to the point where race does not matter; minorities, thank to Obama, can't use the phrase "It's because I'm [insert race here]" as an argument for why they did not get their promotion, job, etc.

Please try and think of exceptions to this coverage if you can. Perhaps you recall the recent case of murder involving relatives of actress and singer Jennifer Hudson, who lost her mother, brother, and nephew. Jennifer Hudson gained her fame through "American Idol" and her Oscar-winning performance in "Dreamgirls," and it was her celebrity that drove the news coverage, not the plight of her missing 7-year-old nephew.

Do you remember his name? It was Julian King. If he had been a pretty white girl, it would probably be on the tip of your tongue.

Masterful ending that drives home the point.
