This is why fans shouldn't be allowed to vote for anything. Not having a single Shark, Bruin, or Red Wing in either starting lineup is asinine.

2009-01-03 03:17:00 PM
How about Ovechkin? The most exciting player in the NHL. Talk about getting the shaft.

2009-01-03 03:21:09 PM
That's absolutely ridiculous. Crosby and Malkin, sure, but while many of the other players are good, if not great, there are better players. For Ovechkin not to be starting is a travesty.

2009-01-03 03:23:32 PM
Wow.

That's even worse than the MLB All Star voting.

2009-01-03 03:24:36 PM
None of those teams are division leaders and the Penguins are about to knocked down to 9th by the Panthers.

2009-01-03 03:38:10 PM
Good job, NHL. Can't wait for all of the positive op/ed press this will surely generate. Way to capitalize on the moment of the outdoor game.

2009-01-03 03:49:30 PM
A) who gives a sh*t what the starting lineups are? Hockey's starting lineups are almost completely irrelevant. They'll be out there for 30-40 seconds and then it won't matter.
B) STFU about the whole crybaby "the best players aren't being chosen". It's a goddamn exhibition game. The world didn't spend weeks crying about players having good years not getting selected for All-Star games back in the '70s. Grow up.

2009-01-03 04:30:25 PM
Good job NHL. Keep it up, soon you won't be a major sport.

2009-01-03 05:44:49 PM
It's rather irrelevant (unlike the MLB starting lineup), as shifts are short in hockey.

But it does go to show how stupid many sports fans are. These All Star game votes are usually pretty bad, but this is especially poor.

2009-01-03 06:09:56 PM
But it's not irrelevant.

The two starting goalies would probably not even be on the team otherwise. There are 3 goalie slots for each team, the starters are taking up a slot from someone who should be there. Same thing on defense.

For Montreal to even have 4 players, let alone starters is ridiculous.

Some players who should not be in the game are taking roster spots from players who should be there.

2009-01-03 06:11:31 PM
FTFA: Mike Komisarek - Stats Through Jan. 1: 1 goal, 1 assist - 2 points

That is all.

2009-01-03 06:17:20 PM
The game is being played in Montreal which is probably why there are so many Canadiens. Markov and Komisarek are good and should probably be on the team, but starters?

2009-01-03 06:19:09 PM
this is why the A.S. game is irrelevant. What was wrong with having the gm/owners or whoever pick one from each team like they used to? Montreal fans are just embarassing the league, selfish pricks. wow, the all star game is in montreal, give the tards a cookie.

I take it, this is who IS supposed to be starting right?

Look past the whole "starting lineups don't count" and instead see that half of those guys don't even deserve to be on the All Star team to begin with.

Kovalev - Only 29 points. That's not even in the top 35 for forwards, let alone only having 9 goals.

Komisarek - 2 points. Enough said.

Carey "Jesus" Price - Not in the top 10 for wins, GAA, Save Pct., or shutouts.

Toews - Ranked 25th among Western Conference point leaders.

Giguere - Worse than Price in every category; right around 20th.

The other guys I have no problem with being on the All Star Team considering their numbers and level of play, but the guys above...give me a break.

The players should pick the All Star team for their respective conference, and then the fans should vote on the starting lineups from those chosen players. Having the fans chose unworthy players is crap, especially for those deserving players who got snuffed for hometown favorites.

What a crock.

2009-01-03 06:26:20 PM
Wow. I've always known All-Star game voting is a joke, but this is freakin' embarrassing.

For all the haters, at least Crosby and Malkin are amongst league leaders (recent slumps and ridiculous slap fights aside). Kane and Getzlaf are good, too, but I'm not sure they are starting material just yet.

I'm not sure which is the bigger joke, Komisarek or Niedermayer. Neither deserves to be there period, let alone starters.

I won't even start on who is missing.

2009-01-03 06:26:21 PM
Forget the starting lineup, Kovalev should not be in the All-Star game at all.

2009-01-03 06:27:24 PM
It's not a team until it has Rory Fitzpatrick

That Cherapanov doping based heart attack makes me wonder a little bit about Malkin who was not far removed from Cherapanov in development path at all

2009-01-03 06:28:30 PM
I am apoplectic that Hank Lundqvist isn't starting. Jesus.

Yeah, that was my ballot.

Nothing better than watching Wings fans whine, even if they're half right. But it is nice to see the Zharks deservedly represented again.

2009-01-03 06:33:45 PM
alacoco: I'd be the first to admit that this is neither the year for Giguere (who happens to be my favorite player and SHOULD have been an All-Star/Vezina Finalist last season) or Neidermayer's year for an ASG, but Getzlaf deserves to be there right now. He's got 44 points in 38 games (second in the west, one point behind Iginla), he's a + on an Anaheim team that's giving up a LOT of goals this year, 76 hits, and leads Anaheim in shots, goals, and assists. While, yes, leading an Anaheim team with Todd Marchant skating on the second line isn't very impressive, he's doing damn good this year.

2009-01-03 06:35:37 PM
My take on the starting lineup:

East

F - Malkin
F - Ovechkin
F - Marc Savard
D - Andrei Markov
D - Dennis Wideman
G - Tim Thomas

West

F - Iginla
F - Getzlaf
F - Thornton
D - Rafalski
D - Boyle
G - Kiprusoff

Did I miss a FARK call to vote the worst players in the league onto the All-Star teams. It appears to me that the NHL has been rickrolled.

2009-01-03 06:57:03 PM
The Winter Classic is here to stay, the All Star Game is irrelevant.
It's only a matter of time at this point.

2009-01-03 07:00:01 PM
Ok everyone needs to put there pants back on and calm down...we are talking about the biggest who-gives-a-crap game all year. If anyone here is at all shocked that the all-star game is a popularity contest you need to maybe re-think things. The game is IN montreal, could you not assume every single montreal radio station is telling fans to go out and vote? Do you know who probably has the largest fan base in the league? THE CANADIENS! Man, if anyone here was paying attention earlier for about 1 month the entire east starting line-up was canadiens. who cares? and i'm sorry tim thomas is garbage, Boston-mania is the definition of bandwagon, who would want to watch a fish flop around in the all-star game?

I am sorry but a W16 L4 OT5 record isnt that bad, considering he has missed a lot of time and the canadiens have got at least one point in the last 14 games he has been in, if that isnt good enough for you, you can proceed to sip the hate-o-rade

A) The 'voting' system is the FANS. Best voting system there is.

B) Alexei Kovalev is a former Penguin. Which makes this even funnier.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are 2-1 in the scoring race. Oh yeah, they suck.

This only happened because Montreal fans were using bots to superloadup on votes. I think its also interesting that people were able to vote via text message for an ENTIRE TEAM's players on the list.
Now with more people having unlimited text messaging, it would be easier to "pump up" the final standings.

No one seems to have said anything about how Gonchar was like 3rd or 4th in voting- and he hasn't played a single game this season.

I'm not sure which is worse as a hockey fan: Seeing that the NHL either cannot or will not do something to prevent this... or seeing that nobody cares.

all i gotta say is i've always thought the all star game was a useless waste of time, so i could care less what goes on during it. i don't even watch the game. i do enjoy the skills competition tho.

If the Sharks keep being the league leaders, isn't Todd McClellan going to be the coach of the west?

I would only make one change, Nabokov instead of Kiprusoff. Other than that, I like.

Why does that matter? Really, the star players who aren't starters will be added.

The reason I brought up baseball is because it has the ONLY All Star game that matters, as it decides who has home field in the World Series. Otherwise, who really cares? I mean, great, the NHL All Star game is usually fun to watch, but it's not that big of a deal.

2009-01-03 08:59:54 PM
Again, though, poor choices by fans, regardless of the game's importance.

But it is no different than other sports. Baseball, you have Yankees/Red Sox vs Cubs/Mets/Whoever in the All Star game (well, the starters).

Britney Spear's Speculum: If the Sharks keep being the league leaders, isn't Todd McClellan going to be the coach of the west?

Not if they can't get some passion and finish back. They've lost steam since the beginning of December. They've just been lucky to eek some games out into overtime to at least get the loser point.

Sure, the game doesn't matter, but stupid voting for something that doesn't matter is still stupid voting. People who voted for Komisarek are stupid.

He blocks shots and hits a lot. Blocking shots in an all-star game is stupid because it's unnecessary and could cause injury. Hitting hardly happens.

My sarcasm meter must be broken. 3rd in the league in SV% and GAA, and he's garbage?

Difference between the NHL awards and the All star game? Fans will at least check out the TSN story on the awards just to see who won.

Ok I just watched the great team from Montreal play my beloved TB Lightning and I came away with a couple of thoughts. TB completely outplayed the habs for the entire game but had the typical offensive problems. Price is completely overrated (Mike Smith looked really good whereas the habs must be kicking themselves after letting so much goalie talent go). TB slammed the habs around and they did nothing but run away (really i expect a little more but Larouque wasn't playing). Overall, I thought Montreal looked very overrated.
